Fall Garage Sale Saturday, October 10, 7 am–noonThe semi-annual Somersett Garage Sale is here, and that means it’s time clear out your summer stuff and make way for fall. Per Somersett Owners Association, this is one of just two community-wide garage sales each year. If you would like to have your Somersett home listed on the map, please email [email protected] with your name, street address, Somersett neighborhood and phone number. No email access? No problem. Just stop by the Club or call 787-4500 with this information. To be included on the map, all submissions must be received by Tuesday, October 1. Maps will be available for pick up starting Friday, October 9 from 12–8 pm and Saturday starting promptly at 7 am at The Club at Town Center. Participants will be allowed to put up signs during the sale only to direct people to their street/house. To donate any leftover items to United Cerebral Palsy of Nevada, ask for a donation pick-up when you sign up to get your address registered. Donation pick-ups will be arranged for Saturday afternoon on October 10.

If you dare, wander through Friday evening, and if you make it out, come again for another tour during the Fall Festival on Saturday. Somersett’s Annual Fall Food DriveSaturday, October 17 through Saturday, november 21benefiting the Food bank of northern nevadaIt’s that time of year for Somersett’s Annual Food Drive benefitting the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Last year the community donated 237 pounds of food and this year we want to DOUBLE that amount! We will be tracking our progress throughout the month and hope to achieve 474 pounds of food to support those in need this season! Donations for the Food Bank will be accepted at the concierge desk at the Club at Town Center.

It is very important that the food that is donated is not expired, as

the Food Bank will have to throw out any expired or damaged food. Items most in need are:• Canned Meals: Stews, Soups, Spaghetti/Ravioli (Low-Sodium

Community Driving Range HoursSeptember Tuesday through Sunday, 8 am–6 pmOCtOber Tuesday through Sunday, 8 am–5 pm Somersett residents are encouraged to use the driving range at the country club. With the new SOA/country club agreement, range usage is complimentary. Please check in with the range attendant located at the driving range, provide identification as a resident and

sign the usage sheet. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Complimentary range usage will be offered on the cushioned mat located at the north side of the driving range only. We will provide shuttle service every 20 minutes during operating hours from May through October. Access to the turf range, putting green and chipping green is available for $10 per person per day, payable at the golf shop prior to usage. Again, juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Our golf dress code applies.

Country Club First Tee TimesSeptember Tuesday through Friday: 8 am; Saturday & Sunday: 7:30 amOCtOber Tuesday through Friday: 8:30 am; Saturday & Sunday: 8 amAll Somersett residents have access to playing the championship course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $65 per player (in season) and $40 per player (off season November through March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800 x2. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For ladies, we ask no denim, no spaghetti-strapped tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required.

Bocce Ball Court HoursSeptember & OCtOber Tuesday through Sunday: 8 am–7 pm**May play until dusk if in possession of own bocce ballsPlease note there is a grooming rake/brush located on the outside wall of the golf shop. Bocce balls and scoreboards may be checked out from the golf shop staff during operating hours.

Golf InstructionThe PGA golf staff at the Somersett Golf and Country Club is available to take your game to the next level. With over 35 years of combined experience, why venture out for golf lessons when you can improve your game right here in your own backyard? Instructor rates vary between $60 and $80 per hour.

Tips from the Country Club Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

Driving the Ball Farther We all want to hit the ball farther. In many instances, we attempt to do so by strengthening our muscles and trying to “force” distance by hitting the ball harder. This technique actually slows the club down. To hit the ball farther, we need more clubhead speed. The smaller muscle groups (arms, hands, wrists) must remain relaxed and tension free to generate this speed. The goal should be swinging the club faster – not harder. Remember, the golf ball is merely a highlighted object in the path of the swing – we should be swinging through the ball and not at it.

General Club RulesMembers must check-in to the facility upon entering and show their membership card, photo ID or have their picture taken to program into the system. Members may be turned away if they cannot provide valid ID.

RSVP PolicyPlease remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up FeeThe Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members are allowed to bring up to six guests at one time for a maximum of ten visits per guest. Members must accompany guests at all times.

Adult Pick-Up Basketballtuesdays & thursdays, 7:30–9 pmJoin us weekly for a friendly game of pick-up basketball. You’ll improve your game, meet new people and fit in a workout too. Pick-up basketball is for adults only, ages 18 and up. We hope to see you there!

No previous painting experience or drawing skills are necessary. The emphasis is to create an environment in which students feel free to play and experiment with colors and methods to create luminous watercolors. Already have experience? This class will help you discover your own painting style while learning about the exciting and versatile possibilities of watercolor painting. Explore wet-into-wet, dry brushing, color changes, values, glazing, lost and found edges and negative painting techniques while moving closer to achieving your personal artistic goals. Trick-or-Treat TipsHALLOWEEN NIGHT

• Trick or Treaters are usually roaming the neighborhoods from 5:00–9:00 p.m. on October 31.

• Please drive slowly and be careful at intersections—there are witches and ghouls everywhere!

• Make sure your porch and walkway is well lit. It lets the kids know you are there to greet them and it keeps everyone safe.

• Get in the spirit...put a costume on yourself and make it fun for the kids!

• After 9:00 p.m. dispose of your pumpkins so the goblins don’t get them.

• Carry glowsticks and flashlights.

• Wear comfortable shoes and a costume that fits so you can move easily.

• Make a plan and know where you are going. Stick together as a group, but carry identification in case you get separated.

• If an entryway is dark, they are probably not home so skip it.

• Check your candy before you eat it. Make sure the wrapper has not been tampered with.

Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. • The room operates on a six to one ratio, with a maximum of sixteen children allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Reservations may be made online at mysomersett.com seven days in advance. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked in their child within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the wait list. • no-shows will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

Northern Sierra Endurance Training (NSET) Mission: NSET’s mission is to provide a venue for individuals to meet other people training for endurance events in the Truckee Meadows. other nonprofit organizations.“Training with NSET is a great way to meet your personal

fitness goals, whether it be qualifying for the Boston Marathon or just living a healthy life style. Being a supporter of NSET provides the opportunity to help local families in need and vital youth programs that need additional support. It’s a great way to give back to the community” says Jim Harvey, president of NSET.

NSET was started in 2008 by Toni Belaustegui, Eric Beye and Ski Pisarski. They did so to help patients in dire need due to medical difficulties and provide a training environment for free for all runners, walkers, cyclists and triathletes. They had been coaching for a national level non profit for the previous 12.5 years and had helped raise nearly two million dollars for this nonprofit, and saw less than $5,000 come back to patients of the Northern Sierra Area. They wanted to have a true nonprofit (we have no paid employees and no expenses) that could help local

people in need and keep all the funds in “our community”. Secondarily, they wanted to help local youth running and athletic endeavors to pro they a healthy life for our youth.

Since their inception NSET has granted over $104,000 back to the community. With over 650 currently on their email list, notices are sent out regularly.

There is no fundraising requirement to train with NSET. We do offer any athlete the opportunity to raise funds for specific charities or other nonprofit causes. This function can be made available to any athlete upon request, and will be handled by our Financial Committee for Donation-Grants/Sponsorships-Fundraising. To find out more go to: www.nset1.org.

Tony Fakonas lives in Somersett by accident. He and wife Debby, had never considered Nevada for their retirement years until they took a random drive in the summer of 2006.

The couple had believed they would find the perfect retirement home inland in California or return to the Midwest – but one drive through Somersett and they fell in love with the community.

Then the race was on to find a home. Tony and Debby considered and twice almost purchased a home in Sierra Canyon – but the deals never quite came together. They kept driving neighborhoods and toured multiple houses both in and outside of Sierra Canyon. Late one afternoon at the end a long day of viewing houses, they visited one last home in Copper Knolls. As soon as they walked in and saw the yard and mountain views through the large windows, they both knew without any doubts that they were “home”.

Living here has been “better than they ever imagined” for many reasons. Reno leaves behind the hassle of the big city while providing beautiful surroundings, colorful seasons, and clean air and water. Big time lovers of theatre, Tony and Debby enjoy the Broadway Series at the Pioneer, University of Nevada shows, and several smaller theaters such as Bruka and Reno Little Theater, not to mention the ad hoc hotel offerings. They also take advantage of all the summer events including ArtTown, Hot August Nights, and baseball at the Aces stadium.

Tony was born in St. Louis, grew up in Phoenix, and went to undergraduate school in Irvine, CA, where he completed his bachelor degree in physics. He completed his master’s in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Illinois in Urbana and went on for a MBA from the University of Chicago. With this background, it is no wonder that Tony gravitated to volunteering for the Somersett Board of Directors.

His first interaction with the SOA board was voicing a complaint over a storage issue down at the Town Center. “But I felt that if I wasn’t willing to do something, then I had no right to complain,” Tony says. He volunteered for the Transition Committee tasked with planning for the move from the developer to the homeowner board. Subsequently, he ran for the Board to help with the implementation of that plan.

“It has not been an easy transition,” he says, taking at least 10–15 hours a week of work, and often many more. “We had to dig below the surface and determine what we needed and wanted long term for this community. At the same time, the SOA faced numerous legal issues which occupied much of the board’s time for the first two years. “Thankfully, most of those are behind us now,” says Tony, “although just when you think you have finished, something new seems to always pop up. I think that’s an unfortunate reality of living in such a large, diverse community.” Through it all, Tony took a significant role in putting together the strategic agreement with the Somersett Country Club, settling the Moana Suit, and serving as

Board President since homeowners first took over control of the SOA at the start of 2013.

“I really think we are now heading in the right direction, although many challenges remain,” Tony expresses. This year Tony has focused the board on setting priorities for long term growth including:

Planning for new amenities, Increasing communications with homeowners, Ensuring Somersett addresses the drought, and Increasing oversight of service providers.

To relax, Tony indulges his two passions – tinkering with old cars and woodworking, especially using a wood lathe. Tony and Debby have two children. Jim recently earned a PhD from Cal Tech and now lives in Eastern Tennessee. Kate graduated from Purdue and is a toy designer for Hasbro in its Rhode Island headquarters. And in early November they will add another joy to their lives – a granddaughter.

pOOL rULeS1. Hours of operation are set by management. Swimmers are

asked to use caution at all times when utilizing the pool area. Any incidents should be reported to a lifeguard immediately.

2. Children under the age of 18 are only permitted to use the lap pool during the published times.

3. Children using flotation devices must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children under the age of 6 must be closely supervised by an accompanying adult.

4. Children wearing diapers must have vinyl pants over the diaper and under the bathing suit. The club reserves the right to ask a child to be removed from the water if not wearing vinyl pants.

5. Proper bathing suits are required for swimming. No cut off shorts or thongs allowed.

6. Please shower before entering pool.7. No diving in any area of the pool.8. No glass containers of any kind permitted on pool deck.9. No food or drink allowed in the pool.10. Temporary shade structures are limited to outdoor personal

umbrellas. No tents, canopies or other similar personal shade structures will be permitted on the pool deck.

11. Persons with skin disorders may be denied use of the pool.12. No pets allowed within pool deck area. Exceptions will be

made for guide animals.13. No rafts permitted without approval from management.14. No running, horse playing, or water guns permitted within

pool deck area.

15. Kickboards are for use as swimming aids and/or swimming instruction; no standing, sitting, or horse playing allowed.

16. The pool furniture is not to be removed from its location on the pool deck.

17. Members are not permitted to bring in outside coolers larger than 12”x12”x12” without prior management approval. No outside alcohol is permitted. Staff reserves the right to inspect coolers and take possession of any alcohol being brought into the facility.

18. Refrain from talking to lifeguards while they are on the stands.19. Lifeguard’s instructions must be obeyed by members and

guests for maximum safety.20. Management may reserve portions of the pool deck for

member or Club sponsored parties and events.

SLiDe rULeS1. Swimmers must stay clear of the catch pool and slide exit

area. Do not reach into the slide from the deck area.2. Riders must exit the catch pool immediately after use.3. Children less than 48 inches tall who are unable to swim may

only use the slide with a parent.4. Parents may assist their child out of the water in the catch

pool if necessary, but they cannot stand in front of the slide to catch their child. Parents may wait at the steps if needed.

5. Only one person at a time allowed down the slide, excluding a parent and small child as described above.

6. Please walk up the steps and make sure the catch pool is empty before beginning slide run.

7. Riders must go down on their back with feet first.8. No flotation devices of any kind permitted on the slide,

including those in bathing suits.9. No goggles, sunglasses, hats or any object that may fall off

into the water permitted on the slide.10. No diving from the slide into the catch pool upon exiting the

flume.

SpA rULeS1. The adult spa adjacent to the lap pool is for adults (18+) only.2. Children 12 years of age or younger who wish to use the

family spa must be supervised by an adult.3. Children under 12 years of age should not use the spa for

more than 10 consecutive minutes.4. Extended exposure to hot water or vapors may be

detrimental to the health of elderly persons and persons with heart conditions, diabetes or high or low blood pressure.

5. People with skin, ear, genital or other body infections, open sores or wounds should not use the hot tub because of the possibility of spreading infection.

6. Parents are to warn children not to allow water in their mouths as this can cause infection and illness.

7. The heat of the hot tub water speeds up the effects of alcohol and can cause sleepiness, dizziness and unconsciousness.

8. Horse playing, splashing and swimming are not permitted in the spas.

9. The family spa will close daily from 2–2:15 pm for backwashing and refilling.

Lap Pool Usage*Signs at the lap pool will indicate what is taking place during the day. Look for signs reading “Lap Swim Only,” and “Aquatic Fitness Class” posted on the lap pool gate entrance or at respective swim lane ends.*Lap Swim Etiquette: Please be courteous to other lap swimmers when there is only one lane in use. Circle swimming is a good rule of thumb when there are multiple swimmers in one lane. Please stay to the right of the blue lane guide to swim when this is appropriate.

Aquatic Weather PolicyFor the safety of members, the Club follows American Red Cross guidelines for thunder and lightning. From the time staff hears thunder or sees lightning, the pool will be cleared for 30 minutes. In the case of lightning, the pool deck must be cleared due to the danger of a strike.

In the case of consistent inclement weather, the manager will make the decision to close the pool for two-hour increments to accommodate the ever-changing weather patterns. If the weather improves, then the pool will reopen. Pool closing and/or opening times will be placed on the golf hut window, concierge desk and Facebook.

Rain passes will be issued in the case of inclement weather if the guest signed in less than one hour prior to closure time. The check-in attendant on duty will issue the rain pass to applicable guests. No cash refunds will be given.

Hikers can travel the footsteps of early emigrant’s journey across the Sierra Nevada mountains October 3 & 4 by

participating in the 23rd Annual Donner Party Hike.

Participants can choose from six different hikes on Saturday, and a walking tour on Sunday. All hikes offer

interesting insight into emigrant history from local area guides, along with invigorating recreation and beautiful scenery.

Saturday’s hikes begin and end at Donner Ski Ranch located on Highway 40 on Donner Summit. Guides will lead groups of

approximately 10–20 people to interpretive spots giving detailed historical information focused on emigrant and area history. In the

afternoon, hikers will enjoy a hamburger lunch, music by Richard Blair and a presentation. On Saturday evening in collaboration with

Sierra State Parks Foundation we will have an evening with Bill Oudegeest talking about his new book “Walking Through Donner

Summit History”.

There are six hike options of varying length offered on Saturday. Explore the Dutch Flat Donner Lake Wagon Road and 1913

Corridor Lincoln Highway with views of petroglyphs, old roadside billboards and the China Wall. Hike up Roller Pass and Mt. Judah

to see where wagon trains were winched up over the granite. Discover pristine High Sierra Lakes or explore Coldstream Canyon. New

this year... the return of the Railroad Snowsheds hike. Each hike offers a unique and memorable experience.

Sunday starts with a more relaxed walking tour departing from the Donner Camp Picnic Area, located on 2.5 miles north of

Truckee on Highway 89. Following the walking tour where guides will detail the Donner Party’s encampment, participants will drive

to Donner Memorial State Park to hear more about the Donner Party, the Pioneer Monument, visit the Murphy’s Cabin Site, and enjoy

entrance to the all new visitor center offering a historical movie about the Donner Party.

Space is limited for all events and reservations are required. Early registration for the Saturday hikes is $45 ($50 after September 28,

2015 per hiker) and includes a guided hike, commemorative hiking hat, hamburger lunch and afternoon presentation. Sunday’s walking

tour is part of a two day package and includes the guided walk and entrance to the visitor center. 2-day hike package is $60 ($65 after
