Good People GettingScammed #3Dear Residents,

We hope you are enjoying our Good People Getting Scammed newsletter articleseries.

In June we covered IRS Impersonation Scams. We learned that the IRS will nevercall a taxpayer to demand payment without first having mailed a bill to thetaxpayer. The IRS will also never ask for a credit or debit card number over thephone. Nor will they ever threaten you with a police arrest.

In July we covered unsolicited calls, including robocalls. We learned not to give outpersonal information in response to an incoming call. We also learned that saying“no” or just hanging up are very good options!

This month we are learning about Sweepstake scams and Jamaican Lotteryscams. Here is how they work:

A Sweepstakes scam will start with a phone call, or something in the mail tellingthe person that they have won or have been entered to win a prize. Scammers willclaim to be various people but don’t necessarily associate with any specificorganization. They will inform the victim that they have won $1 million andsometimes a new car.

Scammers then require the victims to pay a fee to either collect their supposedwinnings or improve their odds of winning the prize. The fee is usually requestedas a wire for several hundred dollars via Western Union.

Scammers obtain phone numbers from “Lead Lists” which are essentially a list ofvictims and potential victims. Scammers buy and sell these lists and use them totarget consumers in futures scams.

A Jamaican Lottery scam will start with a simple phone call, usually from anumber beginning with “876”, the country code for Jamaica. Scammers tell victimsthey have won the Jamaican lottery or a new car and, for their winnings to bedelivered, they must first wire a few hundred dollars to cover processing fees andtaxes.

The criminals will often instruct their victims not to share the good news withanyone so that it will be a “surprise” when their families find out. Scammers tellvictims to send the money in a variety of ways including prepaid debit card, electronic wire transfers, money orders and even cash.

Rest assured, you have not won the lottery or a sweepstakes, especially if youhave never entered to win a prize. The best advice we can offer is do not providethe caller with any information. Please hang up the phone as fast as possible!
