TONY BARR In the deep of winter night, the wind blows cold, the stars shine bright. The shepherds wake; they see a light, and come to worship the new-born king. Wise men three from lands afar are guided by the ancient star. With gold and frankincense and myrrh, they come to worship the newborn king. Young and old, now greet this birth, with princes, kings from all the earth. Their lives they bring, their gifts of worth, and come to worship the newborn king. Raise your voice in joyful song, your harmony both sweet and strong. Give thanks to God this happy morn, and come to worship the newborn king. This is a journey song, about seekers of light. The Christian Nativity Narratives tell of two journeys. The Shepherds in the fields surrounding Bethlehem saw a great light, accompanied by angelic choirs (Sky People, in Huron cosmology). And the Astrologists, Magi, from the East, see the light of a great star (comet?), which they followed in quest of enlightenment. To this day we look to the East for wisdom, healing and enlightenment. The song relates these two biblical stories to our own quest. In verse three, we join their celebratory journey. Yet this journey goes beyond celebration. It embraces the entire response of humanity to the astronomical wonders of our solar cycle and the endless array of stars, far distant solar systems, and galaxies, nebulae, super novae, the vast cosmological wonders laid open by the astrophysicists. Since the dawn of time, the primitive peoples of this planet have raised their heads and gazed with awe, tinted with fear, at the vastness of space in which they floated, whether on a flat plane or an orb enshrouded in blue. These responses were the roots of their religious practices, based on the solar cycle of solstices, equinoxes and eclipses. From these foundational religions, Christianity emerged, building on those pagan practices which they assumed into their story of the death, resurrection, life and teachings, and birth of the Messiah, Jesus. But for us, this is only the beginning of the journey which began so long ago. We too follow the light, not in a boxed static way which tends to be the hallmark of institutional religions, but beyond the walls which often restrain us, so that we may be drawn by, and follow, the infinite possibilities of our imagination. For Christians, was it not Jesus who said time and again in the Gospels, 'Come follow me', and in the Book of Revelation, 'I make all things new'? - Tony Barr music & text © Tony Barr 1968, 2002 (with Marcy Weckler Barr), 2017 graphics & typesetting by Jabulani published by Jabulani Music 1980, 2002, 2017 distributed by Simply Liturgical Music, LLC (ASCAP). TONY BARR

In the deep of winter night, the wind blows cold, the stars shine bright.

The shepherds wake; they see a light, and come to worship the new-born king.

Wise men three from lands afarare guided by the ancient star.

With gold and frankincense and myrrh, they come to worship the newborn king.

Young and old, now greet this birth, with princes, kings from all the earth.Their lives they bring, their gifts of worth, and come to worship the newborn king.

Raise your voice in joyful song, your harmony both sweet and strong.Give thanks to God this happy morn, and come to worship the newborn king.

This is a journey song, about seekers of light. The Christian Nativity Narratives tell of two journeys. TheShepherds in the fields surrounding Bethlehem saw a great light, accompanied by angelic choirs (Sky People, inHuron cosmology). And the Astrologists, Magi, from the East, see the light of a great star (comet?), which theyfollowed in quest of enlightenment. To this day we look to the East for wisdom, healing and enlightenment.

The song relates these two biblical stories to our own quest. In verse three, we join their celebratory journey.Yet this journey goes beyond celebration. It embraces the entire response of humanity to the astronomicalwonders of our solar cycle and the endless array of stars, far distant solar systems, and galaxies, nebulae, supernovae, the vast cosmological wonders laid open by the astrophysicists. Since the dawn of time, the primitivepeoples of this planet have raised their heads and gazed with awe, tinted with fear, at the vastness of space inwhich they floated, whether on a flat plane or an orb enshrouded in blue.

These responses were the roots of their religious practices, based on the solar cycle of solstices, equinoxes andeclipses. From these foundational religions, Christianity emerged, building on those pagan practices which theyassumed into their story of the death, resurrection, life and teachings, and birth of the Messiah, Jesus. But for us,this is only the beginning of the journey which began so long ago. We too follow the light, not in a boxed staticway which tends to be the hallmark of institutional religions, but beyond the walls which often restrain us, so thatwe may be drawn by, and follow, the infinite possibilities of our imagination.
