Greetings Sonia Sotomayor Families!

It is so great to be back at school! Last week Jenni Egstad, our librarian, and I traveled to

Guadalajara for the International Book Fair. The Expo Center was filled with more than 2,000

book vendors from many different countries and to be honest, it was a bit overwhelming at

first! Luckily, Mrs. Egstad had developed a relationship with a book company called Lecto-

rum who works with over 60 publishers who feature Spanish books. Lectorum gave us an

iPad with a scanner and we spent the next three days scanning over 750 titles that will arrive

within the next 6-8 weeks! Lectorum also agreed to free shipping and 35% off each book!

We were very good stewards of the $10,000 PASI granted the school for library books. The

American Library Association sponsored our hotel rooms, breakfast each morning, and gave

us a $100 travel voucher towards our airfare. What a wonderful opportunity it was for us to

attend with over 60,000 people from all around the globe!

I would like to thank all of you who attend PASI’s Great Gatherings last month. It was a beau-

tiful event with many incredible auction items and gatherings to sign up for. It was great to

see the teachers and interns dressed up and having a fun time socializing with parents,

friends, and colleagues. If you didn’t have an opportunity to sign your child or yourself up for

a Great Gathering event, you can do so until Dec 21st at the following link: http://

www.payit2.com/e/ggremainingspots

In November we held 3 informational meetings and have one more to go. We have had fan-

tastic attendance and our 5th grade students are doing a fabulous job presenting and provid-

ing tours of the school. We are excited to have more applications for kindergarten than we

have spots to fill! This is a wonderful problem to have!

This weekend we will once again host Project Warm-Up! Please consider stopping by any-time between 10:00am-3:00pm for the BIGGEST Blanket Making Party ever! Donations of fleece and funds are still being collected! Please take a few moments to view the 2017 PWU video: https://animoto.com/play/RC6O61T7k56hFDI96N4Ybg We are challenging the stu-dents to count the number of SSE staff in the video. It’s a lot! I would like to all of you for the generosity and support you continue to show our program,

our staff, and those around us who are facing one hardship or another. We are blessed with

so many wonderful families and staff! Thank you for all that you do to help us make Sonia

Sotomayor Elementary a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Blessings to you and yours,

Tracy Vik

Wanted: Internships/Apprenticeships

By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent

Think back to the time in your life when you were making the choice about your

future. Maybe you decided to enter the work force immediately after receiving your

high school diploma. Perhaps you entered a branch of the military and served our

country. Some of you enrolled in a two-year or four-year postsecondary institution to

learn the skills needed to start a career. How did you choose your path? Did you have all

of the information you needed? Are you doing today what you thought you would be doing back then?

Today’s students have more career options than ever before, thanks to technology and fast-

paced advances in nearly every job on the planet. All of these options are great – unless, of course, you

find out you don’t enjoy your career or that it doesn’t fulfill the financial needs and wants of your family.

Or, maybe you took out loans to pay for college and the right opportunity never came along.

These concerns are real. That is why the Sioux Falls School District and Southeast Technical

Institute applied for, and received, a $250,000 grant from Citi Foundation to hire Career Coaches and an

Internship/Apprenticeship Coordinator. Further, Governor Dennis Daugaard is committed to the cause

and has assigned Career Advisors in four South Dakota communities (Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Yankton and

Brookings) to improve the workforce climate and help students determine the right path to achieve

their goals.

In addition to working with students, these coaches/advisors will be making connections in the

community. Internships/Apprenticeships (unpaid or paid) are needed to allow high school students a

hands-on, first-person look at local companies and how they contribute to our vibrant local economy.

The goal is to spark a student’s interest and to try them out as a future employee. We hope to offer

experiences to 150 students starting second semester.

The District already enjoys strong partnerships with many local businesses. These additional

efforts will serve to educate both students and their parents about the career opportunities available

right here in Sioux Falls.

There is no reason to leave career planning “to chance.” The District looks forward to creating

more meaningful career opportunities for students, a skilled workforce for employers, and the

satisfaction of parents who can rest comfortably, knowing their child has a bright future ahead in a

career that is just right for them.

Please remember to send

your child with tennis shoes

for P.E. class.

A Note from the School Nurse

Head lice can happen to anyone, it's not uncommon. Most head lice are transmitted by head to head contact. Check your child's hair regularly; if head lice are found, consult a health care provider regarding treatment options. Follow package directions and comb out lice and nits thoroughly. While this is a time consuming task, it is also very effective at pre-venting repeat cycles. Clean all items that may have been in contact with your child's head such as combs, brushes, linens, and stuffed animals. Let your child's close friends and par-ents know so they too can check regularly.

Report all cases to the school nurse. The nurse will provide you with more detailed infor-mation on treating your child, and can re-check your child when they return to school. For more helpful information click here.

Third grade went to the “Outdoor Campus”. The Outdoor Campus’ mission is to provide education about

outdoor skills, wildlife, conservation, and management practices of South Dakota Game Fish and Parks to

all ages in order to preserve our outdoor heritage. The “Outdoor Campus” offers free classes that

promote nature and recreation. Sonia Sotomayor´s third graders had a session on Food Chains. The third-

grade students had the chance to create food chains using different audio-visual aids as: puppets,

flashcards, and a “matryoshka doll”, which was a set of rolls of decreasing size, placed one inside the other,

symbolizing predators and preys. Also, they examined owl pellets. It was a wonderful and great

experience!

Hola!

Last week, Senora Vik and I had the opportunity to attend an international book fair called FIL (Feria Internacional del Libro) in Guadalajara, Mexico. With thousands of vendors and even more publishers, FIL was bigger than I could have ever imagined. It was incredible to be able to make connec-tions with publishers, meet authors and illustrators, and network with Librarians who serve in Spanish Immersion schools and Latino communities across the United States. We literally looked through thousands of books - it was so powerful to be able to look at a book, the illustra-tions and the way it was written to be able to decide if it was a good fit for our students and the Sotomayor Li-brary. A huge THANK YOU to PASI for the $10,000 to con-tinue growing our Spanish collection! I am SO excited to

share all our new titles with the students!!

This holiday season, I am so very thankful for a job where I am supported, encouraged, and absolutely love coming to each and every day! Sotomayor is a very special place to be;

and I’m blessed to be a part of it!

Happy Holidays!

Mrs. Egstad

PASI NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2017

What does immersion look like in Middle School?

Spanish immersion students continue their education in 6th-8th grade at Edison Middle School. While in elementary school, our students receive 80-90% of their daily instruction in Spanish. This changes in middle school to be about 40% of their day.

Classes that are delivered in Spanish at the middle school level include Social Studies, Science and Spanish Language Arts. That means students take English Language Arts, Math, Gym/Health, ICT (technology class) and any elective music classes (Chorus, Band, Orchestra) in English. Some students take a study hall (called directed studies) that would also be in English.

This model is common in many middle school immersion programs. As students get older, there is more differentiation of classes which make it difficult to offer something like a math class in Spanish. Since all students take Science and Social Studies these are great options. They follow the same curriculum and topics that are being taught in the English classrooms as well.

Spanish Language Arts in middle school offers students the opportunity to continue learning grammar, reading Spanish novels, and increasing vocabulary in Spanish. Pending approval of the District's wavier by the SD DOE- starting in July 2018, 7th grade students receiving a passing grade in Spanish Language Arts will earn credit for high school Spanish 2.
