Creating high quality bait is about listening to our anglers requirements, then using the information they have provided, along with my degree level knowledge of aquaculture and fishery management, we source the best quality ingredients available to create new fish catching baits.

Many of these ingredients are unique to Sonubaits and are sourced from all over the world; used in conjunction with existing ingredients we develop and create baits for the modern angler.

A perfect example of this is the latest range; Salted Nut Crush, the blend of nut flours that we use are all direct from the growers of the nuts, they are dried and milled to the correct consistency and some are even roasted to enhance the taste, to this we add finely milled rock salt which further enhances the taste and the appeal to fish. These ingredients come from four different countries and then they are mixed with crushed pellet and blended fishmeal which makes the whole product suitable to be used as a groundbait. This is just some of the lengths we will go to in order to create a new and unique groundbait.

Bream Feeder is another addition to the range, this has been developed in conjunction with Tommy Pickering, the England Feeder Team Captain. Being a modern bream groundbait it combines the

traditional cereal baits along with the more modern crushed pellet and fishmeal mixes creating a groundbait which will be used by anglers both in the UK and abroad.

Added to this we have conducted trials into the densities of hookbaits and the ability of hooking fish, from the research we have developed Semi-Buoyant Bandums which float just enough to counteract the weight of a hook so creating a neutral density bait, because of this they are perfect for feeder fishing as they will sit just above the feeder and readily rise into the fishes mouth even with the most wary fish, resulting in quicker and more regular bites.

These are just some of the new products we have developed to accompany our existing range which includes products such as Match Method Mix; the most popular Method Mix in the UK, Supercrush Krill; the most comprehensive range of Krill products and F1; the original and best sweet fishmeal range.

I hope you enjoy using the Sonubaits products which have been developed for 2013; I know they will help you catch more fish.

See you on the bank!

The Sonubaits Krill range was one of my favourite baits of 2012 and will remain a top choice for years to come. This small shrimp like animal is the main food source for many species of fish all over the world and when used in groundbait, pellets and liquids it can transform your average catches into match-winning catches.

The Supercrush Krill Groundbait is extremely versatile and I use it for a huge variety of tactics. It can be moulded onto a Method Feeder or balled in by hand when fishing on the pole. It is ideal for most species, including carp and skimmers and even specimen carp; the possibilities are endless.

My main two uses for Krill Groundbait are for carp and skimmer fishing. I mix the groundbait so it can be loaded on a Method Feeder using a Method Mould or a little dryer so it can be packed into a cage feeder. As soon as the feeder hits the water the particles and Krill meal start to work, pulling fish from all

through the water column to where my hookbait is lying. My second favourite use for Supercrush Krill is to cup it in the margins. I simply fill a Kup Kit full of damp loose groundbait and tip this onto my margin spots. A big 8mm Krill Soft Hooker Pellet or lump of Krill ONE-to-ONE Paste can then be presented over the top – a deadly tactic for big carp.

When I first saw the Krill Feed Pellets I knew I would love them – I wasn’t wrong! Their size, shape and texture is just perfect for a wide range of uses. One thing I’ve noticed is that the dark red colour makes them stand out better in the coloured water of commercial fisheries. The 4mm size are perfect for fishing on the pole; regular feeding of these super stinky pellets is irresistible to carp, skimmers, bream and tench. I also use them when fishing up to islands – pinging a few pellets each put-in around the float has seen me catch some huge bags of carp.

One item in the range that I wouldn’t be without is the Krill Flavour Shaker. An item that has more uses than a swiss army knife! Add it to your groundbait, sprinkle it over your maggots for krilled maggots, cover your pellets in it, add it to the water used to soak pellets and mix groundbait, boost your hookbaits or meat… this is just a few examples of how the Flavour Shaker can give you an edge over other anglers.

The power of Krill is one that has to be used to be believed. It’s something that I’ll be using for a long time. Try it yourself – you’ll see the results.

These super stinky pellets are irresistable to carp

SALTEDWARNING:CONTAINS NUTS

Nuts have a proven track record with carp finding them irresistible, they also seem to help catch the bigger carp more regularly, and it is these big carp that I am after when I fish a lot of matches.

I talked with Sonubaits about my need to select out the bigger carp to win matches and my theory that there may be some ingredients such as nuts which actively do this. They set about developing the range and started to compile a list of possible ingredients.

We decided to get the nuts in flour form so they have already been ground down and dried, some of the nuts are roasted before they are ground to enhance their flavour and taste. The nut flours are all of the highest quality and all of them are human grade and also used in the food industry.

We experimented with different blends of nut flours and eventually came up with a combination which we firmly believed to be the best which combines the nutty, roasted flavour and taste of some of the flours with the sweetness and crunchiness of some of the others.

To our final blend of nut flours we added salt to really enhance the taste and also give the fish something which they crave. Salt in low levels is very important to freshwater fish as they are constantly regulating the salt content of their body using a process called osmoregulation, they need salts to survive and are constantly absorbing it from the foods they eat and the environment they are in.

We used this unique and natural nutty flavour to develop the range and the most important for me is the groundbait, I needed a fairly sticky heavy mix so Sonubaits put a fishmeal and crushed pellet blend together and mixed this with the nut blend and this is how Salted Nut Crush came about.

It is perfect for a Method Feeder because the fishmeals and crushed pellet bind well to the feeder and the mixed nut blend has light and heavy nut particles in it so the majority stay on the bottom with the odd one popping up which makes bigger carp inquisitive.

Through the summer the range really comes in to its own with the Pastes, Soft Hookers Pellets, Bandums and Feed Pellet all playing an important part in selecting the bigger carp out of the peg which is the key to winning more matches.

My personal favourite way of using the groundbait is on a Method Feeder; the mix of salt, roasted nuts and fishmeal makes it irresistible when used in conjunction with the matching flavoured Band’ums.

Des Shipp is a member of Team England and also the two times winner of the Parkdean Masters, he attributes a lot of his success to keeping ahead of the competition and working out the best methods to catch.

The ever Changing

MeThod

Four years ago, Des designed Sonubaits Match Method Mix which is now one of the most popular groundbaits used in match fishing, but according to Des, times are changing on certain venues.

BAIT GUIDE 2013

For fast and accurate casting every time try using a Preston Innovations Flat Inline Feeder with the Preston Innovations Quick Release Method Mould for a consistent bait presentation.

Method Feeder fishing is now such a common way of fishing, I see anglers fishing it all the time in matches, but I believe that on certain venues it is not as effective as it used to be. I set about making my new mix because I was getting a few knocks on the rod but they were not materialising into a proper bite. Once this had happened, the tip was motionless and this led me to thinking that all the bait had been dislodged from the feeder, so I needed to come up with a groundbait which would withstand the initial attention, leading to the concept of an new harder, stickier method mix groundbait for venues where this occurs.

This is how 50:50 Method:Paste was created. After working closely with Ian Day at Sonubaits we created a sticky, heavy groundbait that can be used in different ways depending on how the day progresses. I can now be certain that all of my bait will hit the bottom when the feeder enters the water, the stickier mix makes the fish work harder to break up the bait on the feeder, creating proper pull-round bites and more fish in the net!

It is very easy to use with the Method Mould as it is easy to compact and very dense. This means it will withstand the impact of casting and also the carp knocking the feeder, so you can fish knowing that the groundbait is still on, causing good attraction to the hookbait. It is also very useful in deep water as hardly any comes off the feeder on the drop meaning all the groundbait is where you want it rather than coming off in the water column. It is not just a bait for the Method and as the name suggests, it is also very easy to make a paste by simply adding a bit more water than you would do for a Method mix and it instantly becomes a superb paste for pole fishing.

The high fishmeal and pellet content lends itself perfectly to creating paste, whether you prefer a sloppy mix or stiffer mix, both can be created from this bag. The 2kg bags allow for both paste and a groundbait mix to be made from just one bag!

The versatility of this groundbait means I always have a bag with me as it covers a multitude of venues where Method or Paste fishing is going to be the tactic which will win the match.

After the success of 50:50 Method Paste Green there is now a lighter coloured Natural version. Some waters respond better to a lighter brown coloured mix and this ticks all the boxes! Don’t lose out on fish due to finicky bites – Try the 50:50 Method Paste Groundbaits and start winning more matches.

Fishing for bream has been changing over the last few years, they still respond to lots of groundbait as they always have, however with the increased use of fishmeal pellets in fisheries they are getting caught more often on fishmeal based baits.

I have found that I am fishing for bream more regularly with my commitment as Captain of the England Feeder Team, and it is apparent that bream groundbaits have not really progressed for a number of years and I feel that we need a new groundbait for the modern bream angler.

It is time for a hybrid bait which combines the traditional golden cereal and biscuit based groundbait and the more modern fishmeal, so after discussions with Sonubaits as to my requirements they started to put together a list of ingredients that could be used.

One of my main requirements for this mix was the colour, it had to be golden yellow which is traditionally associated with bream, the main reason for this is it stands out better on the bed of a lake or river especially when you put plenty of groundbait in to create a feeding area.

In addition to the colour it had to have a few heavy particles in, as these really

hold the bream in the swim as they sift through the groundbait in search of food items. It also had to contain a large amount of fishmeal as this has become part of their regular diet. It needed to be quite a fluffy mix so it could come out of the feeder but also had to bind well so it could take particles to the bottom in a feeder or when being balled in on the pole line.

I am quite particular about my groundbaits and after a lot of experimenting to get the mix exactly how I wanted it we eventually came up with Bream Feeder.

The mix is just the colour I was looking for and has an interesting smell of buttery sweet corn along with a back note of fishmeal and is very easy to mix. It is ideal for use in an open end feeder, Method Feeder or bullet feeders if you have to cast long distances as I am finding it increasingly important to do.

It is great at carrying particles like maggot, caster or corn and creates a good feeding area. Also included is a new ingredient called “Yellow Mist” which gives a yellow cloud to the water but the groundbait also has heavier particles in it to keep the bream feeding on the bottom.

We also developed a liquid to match with the same sweet smell that bream go for which can be added to the groundbait to further enhance the flavour.

Match Method Mix Dark• A dark green version of the massively popular

Match Method mix. The groundbait mixes and performs exactly the same as the original.

• Designed for the modern Method feeder angler, the darker colour offers an edge when fishing in shallow water or up to features such as islands or far marginal edges as fish are less wary of dark groundbaits in clear water. This also makes it a good winter mix. The particles which come off the feeder attract the fish into the area creating competition without overfeeding them.

• Free in every bag is a Preston Innovations flat bed inline Method feeder which is designed for use with the Quick Release Method Mould. The groundbait performs perfectly with this set up and because of the streamlined shape of the feeder, accurate casting is much easier.

Both Match Method Mix and Match Method Mix Dark come with a free Preston Innovations Flat Inline Feeder in every bag.

Match Method Mix• The ultimate pellet based Match

Method Mix for use on commercial fisheries.

• Designed for use by the modern match angler who wants to fish the Method on commercial match venues with confidence. With full easy to follow mixing instructions on the pack it is simple to create the exact mix that Lee Edwards and Neil McKinnon use. The mix is based on the highest quality pellets and fishmeals available.

• Its consistency is such that it stays on the feeder through the cast and impact with the water. Once the feeder has hit the bottom it breaks down quickly, building up the swim and keeping the fish there without overfeeding them.

Use with a bright Semi Buoyant Band’um to give the fish something to hone in on.

Supercrush Expander• Once a secret of many top anglers,

crushed expanders create a base of an extremely effective groundbait. This mix can be used as a light fluffy mix or even an inactive mix by adding more water.

• Doesn’t fill fish up due to being very light.

• Great for using on a Method Feeder, in shallow water on the pole of even mixed up sloppy and cupped in to create a fish-attracting cloud.

Supercrush Green• Made from the highest quality crushed

Koi pellets.

• Designed as an all-round groundbait for anglers targeting anything from carp to big bream or even skimmers, tench and F1’s. It can be used in various different ways depending on the fishing situation.

• The fine particles break down evenly on the bottom creating a fish attracting feeding zone.

• The high crushed pellet content makes it the perfect option for venues that are dominated by anglers fishing with pellets.

Add some Stiki Pellet to your groundbait to make the mix stickier. A great tip when fishing with a Method Feeder.

Sweet Smell of SucceSS

Neil McKinnon is no stranger to catching big weights of F1’s

and Skimmers, so who better to show you why

the range is so good!

Despite feeding all year round, even in the coldest of temperatures, F1’s can be amongst the hardest of fish to catch. The biggest downfall of an F1 is its sweet tooth! Both F1’s and skimmers are suckers for sweet fishmeal flavours. This is where the F1 range excels, the mix of both fishmeal and sweet flavourings pull fish from all over your swim.

Page 15: Sonubaits Match Magazine 2013

15sonubaits.com

BAIT GUIDE 2013

With the development of commercial fisheries, more and more pellets and fishmeal based baits are being used instead of the more traditional cereal based baits. The type of fishing for skimmers has changed dramatically and without using any fishmeal based baits; you run the risk of not doing enough to tempt the fish to your peg. This can spell disaster in a match.

There are a range of different baits in the F1 range, all having their purpose to tempt the finicky feeders.

“The first bait I reach for is the original groundbait. This light fluffy mix contains a mixture of fishmeal, finely crushed pellets and the all-important sweet flavouring. By simply adding 2 pints of water to the 2kg bag, mixing thoroughly and leaving for 30 minutes before riddling, the groundbait you’ll create is a simple easy to use groundbait for any skimmer or F1 session. A bit

more water can be added to make the mix hold more particles such as dead maggots or casters and balled into your swim, or if you want the bait to be very active try adding less water to create a dryer mix. When fishing in the depths of winter or on natural, clear venues I’ll swap the F1 Groundbait for F1 Dark. This black mix makes the fish feed more confidently on the bottom in clearer venues without spooking fish from your peg.

The F1 Feed Pellets are the perfect accompaniment to the groundbait. Available in 2mm, 4mm and 6mm this will cover a huge range of situations. Whether you are softening 2mm’s for using on the Method, cupping in small amounts of pellets on a short pole line or regularly catapulting 6mm pellets when fishing the waggler, these pellets will give you an edge. I like to introduce 50-70 4mm pellets at the start of the session and top up with 5-10 every time I catch a fish.

I have various flavours of Soft Hooker Pellets in my carryall, among them the F1 Soft Hooker Pellets. I like to present a 4 or 6mm pellet on a size 16 or 18 hook when pole fishing for F1’s and skimmers. A single pellet fished over a bed of light fluffy groundbait has won me countless matches in the past with huge weights. Their soft texture is essential when the fish are hard to catch.

Supercrush Dark• Its light fluffy consistency makes

it perfect for a variety of methods when pole fishing. Try coating your luncheon meat in a dry mix for an extra kick or mix it really sloppy to create a cloud when fishing shallow on the pole.

• Mixed normally Supercrush Dark holds together until it reaches the bottom before breaking up to create a fine bed of particles on the bottom, holding fish in the swim for longer, giving you more chance of a bite!

• The blend of crushed pellets provides an excellent fish-attracting aroma in your swim.

Spicy Meaty Method Mix• Spicy Meaty Method Mix is an

• For use on the Method Feeder simply add two pints of water to the bag of groundbait and mix thoroughly, leave this for 45 minutes to allow the groundbait to fully absorb the water and riddle. It is equally suitable for use in cage feeders or can be balled in when mixed slightly dryer.

Try using a bright pink Krill Band’um on a Method Feeder with Supercrush Dark. It makes the hookbait really stand out!

Exploding Fishmeal FeederA hemp and fishmeal based groundbait for the modern feeder angler that bursts from the feeder.

• A modern feeder mix which is based on hemp and fishmeal. Due to the particle sizes it explodes out of the feeder providing a perfect feeding area. The speed at which it comes out of the feeder means you can very quickly build a swim with regular casts.

• Exploding Fishmeal Feeder can be mixed quite dry which means that it will empty from the feeder even more quickly. It can be used as a straight mix or can be used for plugging the ends of your feeder when introducing other baits into the swim.

Marine Halibut Groundbait• A blend of crushed halibut pellets, crushed

carp pellets and fishmeals which has been sieved to create a very versatile groundbait. It can be used on a Method Feeder, in a cage feeder or simply balled in. It is equally at home on commercial carp venues or on rivers for barbel and bream.

• Because of its heavy nature it will also act as a carrier for other particles such as pellets or corn and gives off a very rich cloud of attractants creating a tight feeding area.

Exploding Fishmeal Feeder is my No.1 choice for big Bream fishing. It carries loads of particles and drives the fish into a feeding frenzy.

BAIT GUIDE 2013

Dutch Master Mix and Silver Crush Match are a superb range of European style, bread based groundbaits that have been designed to international match-winning standards.

Designed in conjunction with Arjan Klop and Arnout van de Stadt, some of Holland’s best match angler’s, along with Sonubaits’ top international match anglers, Des Shipp, Lee Edwards and Tommy Pickering; the Dutch Master Groundbaits are guaranteed to attract more fish to your swim. There are two different groundbaits in the range, each designed for different situations.

Dutch Master Feeder Mix GoldDesigned for feeder fishing on rivers, lakes and canals, the carefully blended formula in the groundbait ensures that it can be mixed in a multitude of ways to suit different fishing situations. The groundbait is excellent for use on deep venues due to how well it binds together, leaking off just enough particles to create a superb scent trail to the lakebed. For the best results just add water until you reach the desired consistency, leave the groundbait for 30 minutes to fully absorb the water, if you need to add more water to the mix at this stage then pass the groundbait through a riddle to remove the lumps and you are ready to fish.

The groundbait is made for use in an open-end or bullet feeder as it has the right texture and stickiness for this type of fishing. Plenty of particles can be packed into the mix such as hemp, casters or worms to build up a swim.

Silver Crush MatchDesigned to be the perfect groundbait for targeting silverfish on a variety of venues from both rivers and lakes to canals and drains. Silver Crush Match is a blend of various biscuits, seeds and spices that come together to produce a groundbait that silver fish can’t ignore. Silver Crush is very versatile, it can be mixed in different ways to produce different results, mixed slightly wetter it can hold lots of particles, such as maggots, casters and worms, mixed drier it is very fluffy and has lots of active particles.

Mixing Silver Crush is simple, just add water until the right consistency is reached, then leave to absorb for 30 minutes, add more water if required, riddle the groundbait and you are ready to fish! The perfect choice when silver fish are the target.

Every angler has their own way of preparing Fin Perfect Feed Pellets for fishing. We’ve picked the brains of three top anglers to show how they prepare their pellets. Get trying them and find the one for you.

Adam WakelinI prefer to wet my pellets bit by bit. This way I can’t fail to get them perfect every time.

Lee KerryI always prepare my pellets in the same way. I’ve been doing this for a number of years and have lost count of the amount of bag of pellets that I’ve used in that time!

Des ShippI’ve tried many ways of preparing pellets in the past, but for the last couple of years I’ve stuck with one

fool-proof technique that makes soggy pellets a thing of the past. Perfect on the Pole or Method Feeder.

METHOD PELLETSPerfect

Fill your Bait Tub with

2mm Fin Perfect Feed

Pellets.

Completely fill the bait

tub with lake water until it

overflows.

Place the lid onto your Bait

Tub – if it’s not tight it will

explode!

Leave the pellets to absorb

water for around 20 minutes,

turning over half way through.

The pellets should have

soaked up all of the water and

resemble a brick.

Run your hands through the pellets to break them up.

Pour the required amount into a bait tub. Cover the pellets in water.

Leave the pellets underwater for one minute per millimetre of pellet.

Drain off the excess water and shake the pellets. Leave to stand for 10 minutes.

Run the pellets through your hands or a riddle and they are ready for use.

Pour the required amount of pellets into a bait tub.

Place your hand in a bowl of water.

Run your hand through the pellets to coat them in water.

Leave the pellets to absorb the water.

Repeat the process until the pellets are just how you want them.

Perfect pellets every time.

Andy Findlay is possibly the best commercial fishery angler

in the country and when his brain starts ticking you know it won’t be long before a new

idea is born.

When most people cast out with a Method Feeder they seem to think that all of their bait lands in a nice neat pile on the bottom every single cast. Unfortunately – I don’t! This was a problem that I needed to find a solution for. I want to know that on every single cast the pellets on my feeder are staying on until it reaches the bottom, concentrating the fish around the feeder, giving me the best chance of hooking a fish.

Since the introduction of the Banjo Feeder and Quick Cone Mould this is much more important. Having played with different products to try get the pellets to stick, I still wasn’t happy. The consistency of the sticking agents was not how I needed it, and spending time re-doing bait before a match is not ideal!

This is where the knowledge and expertise of Sonubaits came in handy. On my next trip to the office I

was greeted with an array of different powders and liquids to experiment with. With over 20 different products to test I was sure that something would do the job I needed. The final product didn’t just need to make the pellets sticky and increase my catch rate, it also had to be easy to use!

To cut a very long story short, I narrowed it down to a couple of the products that I had been given, that when used in a fishing situation, really made a difference and the most important part – they were consistent. With a few little tweaks, we came up with a product that worked every time and was simple to use!

I can now make perfect sticky pellets everytime I go fishing. It can even be used to make groundbait stickier, to stick maggots together or to make 2mm pellets into ball to get past the small fish more quickly.

Ever had problems with your expanders splitting and not staying on the hook? It may be down to your preparation. Here’s three top ways that the pros prepare their expanders.

eXPANDErs

I like to colour and flavour my expander pellets to give me an edge over other anglers. A red expander can be deadly on days when others are struggling to get a bite of normal expanders. Its super easy to do and makes a big difference!

Understanding the structure of an expander pellet is the most important thing when it comes to pumping them for hookbaits. They have a hard honeycomb structure and are therefore brittle. If you take them straight from the bag, put them in a bait pump and remove the air this may cause some of the

honeycomb to implode on itself and fracture the pellet, unfortunately you will not be able to see it but they will be the ones that split when you try to hook them. The best avoid this is to soften them before pumping them, then as the air is removed the honeycomb structure flexes rather than breaking.

Half fill the Bait Pump with water

How to: create tHe PerFect exPanderS

Place the required amount of pellets into a shallow tray and cover with a splash of water

After 5 minutes, drain off any excess water and place the pellets in a storage bag

Place this in a fridge overnight to soak in all the water and soften the structure

At your peg, fill the Bait Pump with water and add your softened pellets

Attach the lid and pump until the indicator on the lid goes down

Release the valve on the lid of the Bait Pump

If all of your pellets sink, remove the lid and drain off the excess water, repeat until they all sink

Drain off the rest of the water, but leave them covered so that they don’t dry out. The perfect expanders that won’t split

desshipp

Add any colours or flavours and as many pellets as you think you will need

Put the lid on and attach the pump. Pump until it becomes hard to draw any more air out

Once all the pellets are at the surface, release the air through the valve on the top. Repeat until all the pellets sink

Drain off the water leaving just enough to keep the pellets moist

Leave the pellets to absorb water until the centres are soft

Ton-Up 6mm The expander of choice by professionals, it is an expander pellet but with a much more uniform structure for perfect consistency when pumped. These are denser than a standard expander pellet, so can be fed into the swim with much more accuracy after they have been pumped.

When fishing on a lot of lakes the carp go mad for expander pellets. The only problem is that there can be a lot of small fish in the lake that cause a problem. These fish can pull the pellet off the hook

without you even knowing. I’ve been using a little trick that makes my expander pellets much tougher for the small fish to pull them off the hook and gives me a much better chance of hooking a carp.

ONE-to-ONE paste is very easy to mix; simply use the same amount of powdered paste mix and water. It really is that simple. Pour the water and dry ingredients into a bait tub and mix thoroughly, this creates a very sloppy mix, but have faith! Simply leave it for 30 minutes and it will absorb all of the water and create the perfect paste for fishing on a pole.

The best way to use your paste is to take the size you would like to use and roll it into a ball, put your thumb in the middle to make an indentation and put the hook in the thumb print, fold the paste over the hook and mould round the hook, this is then ready to place in the pot.

Included in each bag of ONE-to-ONE paste is a free paste pot designed to ship out the paste on the pole. These have been designed by Andy Findlay

and he recommends that you place a few Fin Perfect Feed Pellets in the bottom of the pot before shipping out to help feed your swim. This way, you’ll attract those big fish into your swim and be well on your way to a fantastic bag of fish.

ONE-to-ONE paste is available in several flavours, giving you more options on trickier venues where the fish have seen it all.

Whilst Fibre Paste has been specially designed for rod and line fishing, it’s also useful on the pole when margin fishing, or trying to trick mid-water fish that are being fussy. All of the problems you usually get with normal paste fishing will become a thing of the past, as you can cast Fibre Paste an extremely long way without it flying off the hook. It’s got a totally different texture. Unlike a standard paste – which goes very smooth when mixed – Fibre Paste ends up being very soft and fluffy, with a fibrous consistancy.

During the testing stages, Andy Findlay had 143lb at the Glebe Fishery the first time he ever used this paste and has since won using it on the feeder, and also as a mid-water bait on sunny days.

There’s no need to mould it around a paste spring or shot. You simply pinch off a large piece and attach it directly to the hook. Leave it fluffy and rough around the edges, as the attractors within can release into the water much more easily.

With a fluffy bait that’s expanding and pumping out attraction, the fish will take it straight away. Fibre Paste leaks off tiny particles into the water, leaving a halo of attraction around your hookbait. Standard pastes simply cannot compete when fishing shallow or in a rod and line situation.

Your first impressions are that the paste is full of larger particles rather than being fine like a standard paste, but when you add water, it totally transforms into a fibrous, stringy-

textured paste. We recommend you mix your paste up in tennis ball-sized batches. By leaving the paste for half an hour, you should achieve the perfect texture.

No longer will you have to worry about whether your paste is on the hook. You can fish with Fibre Paste confident that you have a durable bait that fish like to eat.

Fibre Paste will totally change the way you think about paste fishing.

Can you cast paste up to 50 yards? you can with Sonubaits Fibre Paste.

When this product was founded, it revolutionised the art of paste fishing. Today, there are many more flavour varieties that give you more choice on tougher venues.

Band’ums

How much attention do you pay to the colour of your hookbaits? One simple change can make all the difference.

UmSUmSbAND’bAND’For many years big carp anglers have written about the colour of hookbaits and how a simple change of colour can mean the difference between a bite and a blank. Many top match anglers are now taking note of this and realising the difference it can make in match catches. England Feeder Team manager, Tommy Pickering is one such angler that knows how important colour can be. Here are his thoughts on hookbaits.

“The Band’um Range is perfect when fishing with a Method Feeder, Pellet Feeder, Banjo Feeder or any situation where a bait band can be used. The durable consistency and dumbell shape means that they will

stay on for a long time, so you can be confident that your hookbait is perfectly presented!

With a wide range of colours and flavours in the range it can be difficult to decide where to start. A top tip is to start with something bright. In coloured water this gives the fish more chance of spotting the hookbait amid the pile of feed. White Chocolate or Krill are good starting points.

Sometimes the fish just don’t want to pick up

bright hookbaits and more natural pellet coloured hookbaits are by far the most effective. An F1 or Tiger Fish Band’um would then be my hookbait of choice.

Experimenting on the day will show which colour the fish want. Sometimes two or three colours

are needed to keep your catch rates high. Don’t be caught short with too few options – Be prepared, keep winning.”

BAIT GUIDE 2013

Semi-Buoyant Band’umsUmSUmS When fishing the Method Feeder you are creating an area of bait which fish will come to and suck the light groundbait or pellets from the feeder, along with the groundbait the hookbait should rise into the fish’s mouth and hook them.

Most hookbaits can be quite heavy and added to this the weight of the hook they will rise at a slower speed than the groundbait on the feeder and this can sometimes result in the hookbait not being taken. If a fish takes the feed from the Method Feeder without getting hooked then you will be fishing without any feed to attract the fish, so you need to be sure that every time a fish takes the Method Feeder, the hookbait and hook rises into its mouth.

Because of these observations we have developed the Semi-Buoyant Band’um. These are the same shape as the sinking version so they are ideal for a bait band which sits perfectly in the middle of the two slightly bulbous ends. These float, but as soon as you add the weight of a hook they will sink slowly, so when they are used in conjunction

with a Method Feeder they will counteract the weight of the hook, so becoming neutrally balanced, and sit just above the Method feeder as soon as the groundbait on the feeder starts to break down. This means that as a fish sucks at the groundbait the Semi-Buoyant Band’um will rise easily, straight into the fishes mouth so you will get bites quicker and more regularly.

They have also been used with great success on a pellet waggler, because they sink slowly with the weight of a hook they take longer to fall through the feeding zone and therefore there is more time for the fish to take them.

Experiment with your pattern of hook to see which size best suits the bait, but most patterns between a size 16 and 10 will work perfectly.

The Band’um Range is perfect when fishing with a Method Feeder, Pellet Feeder, Banjo Feeder or any situation where a bait band can be used.

Boilies are usually hair rigged and often when putting a baiting needle through them they will split or fracture causing them to be weak and come off the hair.

At Sonubaits we have eliminated that problem by pre-drilling the boilies for you and supplying them with two Korum hook hairs with Quickstops and a Quickstop needle making them even easier to use.

They are soft enough to be side hooked and yet they are easy to strike through. They can be hair rigged and some of our anglers use them with a bait band so they can change baits quickly.

Some of our anglers like them even softer, so they take some of the pellets and have them in a small pot of water on their side tray and leave them there till they are ready to use them, this makes them really soft which means the hook will

pull through them very easily when striking into a fish. They will also add flavour into the pot of water which soaks into the soft hooker making it even more potent.

The great thing about the Sonubaits Soft Hooker Pellets is that you can match them to the type of feed pellet you are using. They are the only Soft Pellet that lots of the top team of Sonubaits anglers will use when pole fishing. Need to fish pellets on the pole – look no further!

An important part of a match anglers tactics

This extensive range allows you to add extra flavour to groundbaits, pellets, maggots, meat and corn. The flavours can be used when preparing bait at home, or on the bank to give your bait an added advantage. These Liquid Flavours are particularly effective on heavily fished match venues as they will enhance the bait with a flavour which is highly soluble in water this disperses from the bait and brings fish to your peg.

Add a generous helping of your chosen liquid flavour to the water and mix thoroughly to disperse the flavouring.Add the water bit-by-bit to your groundbait until you reach the desired consistency. Leave to absorb, then riddle the groundbait and you are ready to catch some fish!

Most match anglers simply open a bag, add some lake water and mix. It’s effective, but there’s an even better way to do it. Adding liquid flavours will make your feed draw more fish into the peg, hopefully getting you more bites and winning more matches. It’s easy to do but often overlooked.

Fin on

In 2012 he experimented with Flavour Shakers, The Fin is a big fan of his fishmeal groundbaits and pellets as he believes that they work so well because of their natural flavours.

When Sonubaits launched the Flavour Shakers, three of them took my interest straight away as they would enhance any pellets or groundbaits because of their naturally intense fishy smell and taste. These were Super Octopus, Krill and Super Fish, all of them having a unique smell and taste.

I could see a multitude of uses for enhancing pretty much all of the baits I use. When fishing one of my summer method mixes which is 1 pint of 1mm Fin Feed, 1 pint of 2mm Fin Feed, 2 pints of Green ONE-to-ONE Paste and 2 pints of water, I now add in a good shake of Super Octopus Flavour Shaker to the dry mix probably about 1/4 of a jar. This really increases the potency of the mix creating a much stronger fishy flavour.

Flavour Shakers are also really good for adding to paste to increase their pulling power. I am really happy using ONE-to-ONE Paste, it is very simple to mix, adding one part water to one part powder but I now add the Krill Flavour Shaker to the paste mix to really enhance the fishmeal content, how much you add is up to personal preference but I really like to boost the

paste so add quite a lot, it does make the paste slightly softer and not bind as well which I like, but if you need something a little firmer for the paste just add the Flavour Shaker to 50:50 Method and Paste as this makes a stiffer paste.

When fishing paste I often put some 4mm pellets in the bottom of the paste pot, this helps to feed the swim and also helps the paste come out of the pot without sticking. To dampen the pellets which helps them sink straight away I put some Octopus Flavour Shaker in with the water I am going to use, this flavours the water which is then absorbed into the pellets enhancing the fishmeal flavour of the pellets and matching it in with the paste that will go on top.

The Salted Nut Crush Flavour Shaker is my new favourite for using down the edge, I mix a whole pot with a bag of Tiger Fish Groundbait and cup it in, as soon as the big tails start appearing it is time to go in and really boost your weight at the end of the match.

All fish like to eat fishmeal pellets and groundbaits, this is probably because they see and eat them every day, and they have become an essential part of their diet especially on commercials, so creating an enhanced fishmeal Method Mix, paste or pellets is just a logical progression to catch more fish.
