All of us hope that we may return for a biggerand better Boys' State next year . We appreciateyour kind offer to again use any facilities of theUnion Building.

MILT PHILLIPSDepartment Adjutant,American LegionOklahoma City

ATo the Alumni Secretary :

I hope that I am among the first to extend toyou and Roscoe Cate my appreciation for the an-nouncement of the American Alumni CouncilAward .

While I have not contributed materially to thewinning of this honor, I claim justifiable pride inthe fact that I have been active in the support ofyour administration . The award simply provesto me that my judgment has not been wrong . Itis a signal honor which should be prized by, notonly our club, but the citizenship of this state .

O. F. MULDROW, '22exArdmore, Oklahoma

ATo the Alumni Secretary :

My congratulations to you and Roscoe for win-ning first place with the Sooner Magazine . SinceI have become a "Paying" Alumnus, I have won-dered how I ever missed a year without the Mag-azine.

KENNETH ABERNATHY, '31lawShawnee, Oklahoma

ATo the Alumni Secretary :

I think the award that you and Cate receivedon the Sooner Magazine was certainly well de-served ; and I am happy that you got it .

HARRY L . S . HALLEY, '15, '17lawTulsa, Oklahoma

Dr. S. R . Hadsell, '04, who edits thefaculty page for Sooner Magazine, tooka"leave of absence" from this job duringthe summer as he planned to be awayfrom Norman . However, even as faraway as New England, he couldn't keepfrom reporting about some Sooners hesaw .

I have just read the July issue of SoonerMagazine and have experienced what a readerfrom the outside feels as he looks at the picturesand reads the news. It is a good number.

Mrs. Hadsell and I left Norman June 24 . Wevisited at Cleburne, Texas, a few days whereMrs. Hadsell had the pleasure of driving outto Lone Willow School where she was born .Her mother planted the tree which gave theplace its name . We then left Galveston by boatfor New York City . John Dell, Jack Luttrelland my sister met us at the dock in New YorkCity . It took Jack five clays on the Queen Maryfrom England ; it took us six days from Galves-ton to New York, but we had one day off atMiami Florida .

Since leaving New York we have driven withmy sister clear around Cape Cod with a nightat Falmouth, one at Provincetown, and one atPlymouth .

At Harvard we find our son who had a schol-arship at Harvard last year and Dr . J . O. Hasslerand family from Norman . We have enjoyed re-locating places where we lived in 1907. Dr.Randall Stewart, twice a member of our depart-ment is teaching here this summer. He is nowin Brown University . He married Cleone Odell,Oklahoma City, a graduate of O . U .

We spent a day in Princeton, and though Idid not have time to run Joe Brandt down, Ileft my card on his office desk .

To the Alumni Secretary :I think someone should tell you that the Carl

H. Milams of Evanston had an O.U. Alumnibreakfast' in their lovely garden this morning .I'm sure you would also be interested to knowthere was lots of O .U . Alumni enthusiasm, par-ticularly over the O.U .-N.U. game October 7.Grace Williams told us about arrangements inthe making for a perfectly grand O.U . dinner-dance at the Sherman October 6 . Sounds mightygood and all the Chicago group will be there towelcome and CHEER OKLAHOMA!

LEE STIGLER, '17exChicago, Illinois

ATo the Editor :

During the past year I have followed with par-ticular interest your editorials in Sooner Magazineand I cannot help but feel that many of your prob-lems arc similar to those in my own University .I want to take this opportunity to congratulateyou on your many fine thoughts well expressed .

In the April issue of your alumni magazine Iused your "A Big Job For College Alumni" inits entirety, crediting you for the same . In addi-tion, on several occasions I have taken your ideasand with minor changes have been able to usethem in our own setup .

Some day, I hope not in the too far distantfuture, I would very much enjoy discussing withyou some of the mutual problems which we bothhave .May I express every good wish .

R. BRONSDON HARRISSeattle, Washington

ATo the Editor :

Please accept my congratulations on the splen-did work that you have been doing as editor ofour magazine and particularly for your havingwon first place on Alumni Magazine Awards for1939 from the American Alumni Council . I knowhow you have worked and know that all the creditfor this accomplishment is due to you but, ofcourse, we must say that we have a very efficientexecutive secretary in our friend Ted and he is en-titled to some credit too .

I feel that since you and I were in the Univer-sity as students it has really "gone places" and Itruly feel that much of the credit for many of theaccomplishments can be given to you, Ted andother loyal alumni . I do hope that we will hearno more about them trying to remove Dr. Bizzellbecause I know he has been a big factor in thegrowth of the University and he is entitled to allthe support that we can possibly give him .

JOHN R . PEARSON, '29lawPawhuska, Oklahoma

ATo the Alumni Secretary :

Congratulations to you for the part you playedin gaining for Sooner Magazine the recognition ofbeing the most outstanding alumni magazine ingaining and sustaining alumni interest .

I share the opnion of the American AlumniCouncil that the interest of your column "Ridingthe Sooner Range" is in a major part responsiblefor the popularity of the alumni journal . I enjoyreading your column and can well see how ithelped win the first-place certificate for SoonerMagazine .

JOE C. SCOTT,Oklahoma City

ATo the Alumni Secretary :

One of the pleasant events was to find fromthe telephone directory, near my sister's home inMaplewood, New Jersey, W . L . Kendall, 1903,first Rhodes Scholar from Oklahoma. We spentan evening together going over old times. Hisaddress is 140 Maplewood Avenue, Maplewood,New Jersey . He is manager of the claim de-partment of the American International Under-writers Corporation, 111 John Street, New York .

Within the next two weeks I hope to hearsome lectures at Harvard and do some browsingin the Widener Memorial Library here, besidesrenewing my acquaintance with New Englandshrines of American Literature .

Night before last just at dusk we went throughat Salem what is now shown to tourists as Haw-thorne's House of the Seven Gables . The oldrelics, pictures, furniture in the candle light cer-tainly recalled the romance of Colonial days .

I have seen enough early American antiquesto fill a museum .

S . R. HADSELL, '04Cambridge, Massachusetts.

ATo the Alumni Secretary :

Let me take this opportunity of sending to themagazine staff my hearty congratulations on theaward recently given them . That is fine recog-nition, and shows that our own judgment in priz-ing this magazine is confirmed by disinterestedobservers .

ERRETT R . NEWBY, '07, '08Oklahoma City

ATo the Editor :

After watching me snooping around O .U . forso many years, you would expect to see me inthe newspaper business, cohere I probably belong .But I'm not . I've gone into your business .

After taking my master's at Columbia's Schoolof Journalism, I took a job with Street & Smith, pulp publishers, working with a new sports mag-azine, Athlete . The new map appeared on thestands for the first time last week . It is superiorto the usual pulp .

You know what I do-read manuscripts, editthem, read proofs, make up pages, write blurbs, conduct departments, etc . It's a little differentfrom the reporter's life, but people don't call younasty names .

I received word that Prexy attended Universityday at the World's Fair, but it was impossible forme to attend . I really wanted to see him . Here'shoping the politicians keep their hands wherethey belong and don't worry him too much whenhe gets home .

My regards to Miss Gessner, Mr . Beaird and theDaily staff.

HOWARD WILSON, '38journNew York City

ATo the Editor :

Yea Sooners! Fine going on winning first placein national alumni magazine competition . Canassure you that the judges made no mistake .

Please accept my personal congratulations alongwith Sooners from Western Oklahoma for thissplendid achievement.

BUFF B . BURTIS, '27Clinton, Oklahoma

ATo the Alumni Secretary :

Herewith-with a sigh of relief, which I hearechoed from Norman-a check for $5 .00 to com-plete my payment on the . Life Membership . Now,don't make the remark about me that a friend ofmine made when I told him that a certain gen-tleman had just put the China Colleges in his willfor $50,000.00-"I hope he is in very poorhealth!"

Glad to note from month to month that thenumber of life members is steadily increasing .The incomparable Class of '13 stays fairly nearthe top, but it ought to be at the head of the list .

Two days ago I spent all of one hour in mynative state of Oklahoma, but much to my sor-row the train didn't even hesitate . I was on myway back from a hurried trip to California, andjust cut across the outer end of the Panhandle .

So I must still confess mournfully that it has beena good many years since I set foot on your sacredsoil, and don't know when I'll get there again .

These are strenuous days for all of us who aretrying to help the Chinese in their struggle forliberty by continuing to provide support for theAmerican supported universities and colleges there .They are all carrying on in a very fire way, andhave won warm praise from the Chinese govern-ment and people, and from American diplomaticofficials and other Americans in the orient whohave watched them during the last two years .

All good wishes for your work, and for theprosperity of O.U . during the months and yearsjust ahead .

B . A . GARSIDE, '13New York City

To the Alumni Secretary :Please convey my congratulations to Roscoe for

the winning of the national honors in the AlumniMagazine Contest . And also accept a chunk ofsuch congratulations for yourself as you have awhale of a lot of the responsibility in making themagazine go . The recognition comes as a finetribute to the good work of the alumni association .

Seems as how I was appointed as a member ofthe alumni magazine committee and so far as Iremember, the committee never functioned. Sinceyou won the honors without such aid and assist-ance, we should all feel thankful that we were sosuccessfully inactive .

Come and see me sometime, even though I havecompleted my sentence .

H. MERLE WOODS, '17El Reno, Oklahoma

To the Editor :I have just learned from Ted Beaird that you

have won for the Sooner Magazine the AmericanAlumni Council's first place award for the mostoutstanding and original features gaining andsustaining alumni interest for the alumni year justpassed . Please accept my heartiest con-gratulations and best wishes for the continuedsuccess of the Sooner Magazine under your abledirection .

I am personally particularly happy about thisdeserved recognition since I had some small partin selecting you as our editor and in working outthe arrangements which made it possible for you

to give full time to the Sooner Magazine .FRANK CLECKLER, '21Muskogee, Oklahoma

To the Editor :It was most pleasing to receive a letter from

Ted reporting the receipt of the award of firstplace to the Sooner Magazine and I want to con-gratulate you for receiving the well earned recog-nition . My prediction held true .

"Where did Iput those papers?"

Every busy man gets absent-minded oc-casionally. Particularly do busy men findit hard to remember where they putaway their insurance papers, their deeds, their mortgage releases, and dozens ofother papers that seldom are referred tobut are vitally important.

The ideal answer to this problem is a safe-ty deposit box in the bank . Your papersare safe - and you always know wherethey are.
