The Sor Juana festival is dedicated to Mexico’s great Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695), a great poet and philosopher who was known as La Décima Musa, (the Tenth Muse) and is known as the first feminist of the Americas. Through the Sor Juana Festival, the National Museum of Mexican Art presents writers, musicians, dancers and performers from both sides of the border with a special emphasis on women in the arts.

World Premiere Book Presentation
Scholar Victor Espinosa will be presenting his book on Martín Ramírez (1895-1963), one of the twentieth century’s most famous self-taught artists. Born in Mexico, Ramírez was diagnosed as schizophrenic and confined to California psychiatric hospitals for more than 30 years. During that time he produced more than 450 dynamic drawings and collages imbued with hypnotic power. Utilizing repeating lines and motifs, Ramírez visually transcended his own experience to create a remarkably visualized world, free of the concepts of time, constraints and borders.
Today Ramírez’s work has become recognized as outsider art. His work has been exhibiting in numer-ous solo exhibitions throughout the country, and his fame and notoriety continues to grow. Most recent-ly, in March of 2015, Ramírez’s work was selected to appear on a U.S. postage stamp.

Book Reading with Patricia Dominguez of her new book
“Tsipeni y Joselito” and Children's Art Workshop
Saturday, October 31 at 1:00 p.m.
BILINGUAL
Please join the National Museum of Mexican Art for a special reading of Patricia Dominguez's new children's book, “Tsipeni y
Joselito”. After the reading, children will make their own alebrije out of recycled
materials to decorate and take home.
“Tsipeni y Joselito” is the story of a little
boy, Joselito, who is being bullied at school. He experiences frightening dreams involving
scary monster-type creatures, known as alebrijes in Mexico. One night, a small
alebrije appears. He is smiling and good natured, and the other alebrijes try to scare him away. He stands up to them and, even-
tually, they leave. Remembering this little alebrije, named Tsipeni, gives Joselito the
strength to stand up to the bully at school.

CHICAGO PREMIERE BOOK PRESENTATION - “A HOUSE OF MY OWN: STORIES FROM MY LIFE”
by Award-winning author, Sandra Cisneros
“A HOUSE OF MY OWN: STORIES FROM MY LIFE” - From the beloved author of “The House on Mango Street”, a richly illustrated compilation of true stories and nonfiction pieces that, taken together, form a jigsaw autobiography: an intimate album of a literary legend's life and career.
From the Chicago neighborhoods where she grew up and set her groundbreaking novel “The House on Mango Street”, to her abode in Mexico in a region where “my ancestors lived for centuries”, the places Sandra Cisneros has lived have provided inspiration for her now-classic works of fiction and poetry. But a house of her own, where she could truly take root, has eluded her. With this collection-spanning three decades, and including never-be-fore-published work, Cisneros has come home at last.
