When you throw away stuff in your GENERAL wAstE biN like nappies, chip packets & toothpaste tubes it ends up in.....

Landfill is a large hole in ground where waste is buried and sits for hundreds of years. The rubbish under the soil releases stinky, toxic gases and liquids which pollutes the environment.

Some waste blows away and ends up in parks, gardens and water ways. GroSS!

MADE iNtO NEw stUFF

Every piece of paper which is recycled can be turned into new books, magazines and even toilet paper! It also saves thousands of trees from being cut down to make more paper!

In Bendigo, recyclable items such as boxes, aerosol cans, juice boxes, tin cans and plastic bottles are taken to a recycling facility where they are sorted, squashed down and sent off to be turned into new products.

ORGANiCs organics is any waste which comes from a plant or animal. Stuff like meat bones, egg shells, food scraps, fruit and vegetables peels, tissue and paper towel – all can go in the green Organics bin.

The compost is then used on gardens and farmers paddocks to make the soil healthier to grow more food.

The organics is collected and taken to a composting facility where it is heated, watered and turned over. After 16 weeks the organic waste is turned into rich, healthy brown compost.

THIS BOOK BELONGS TO

In Greater Bendigo we only have one major landfill and it’s nearly full up. This means that in the next few years there will be nowhere locally to get rid of the waste that people who live in Greater Bendigo produce.

So what should we do? Should we cart our waste to somewhere else, or should we try even harder to reduce and sort out our waste so it can be recycled into new products?

Hi, this activity book is packed full of fun and interesting puzzles and games to help you learn how to sort out organics, recycling and general waste in Greater Bendigo.

we’ve invited some friends, Ollie Organics, Ruby Recycling and wally waste to help you along the way.

DiD YOU KNOw?Each year the City of Greater Bendigo collects over 25,500 tonnes of general waste and over 10,500 tonnes of recycling from nearly 50,000 homes.

The City also collects more than 10,000 tonnes of organic waste from more than 38,000 homes. Now that’s a lot of waste and recycling!

Even though Junk Mail is recyclable, Australians still send 1.9 million tonnes

to landfill each year!

In primary schools, most of the waste is either recyclable material or compostable

organics, the rest is general waste.

The organic waste we collect is made into and used for parks and gardens.

DiD YOU KNOw?Not all plastics are the same. There is soft plastic and hard plastic.

When you buy a packet of biscuits, the plastic wrapping is soft plastic and can’t be recycled. The tray the biscuits sit in is hard plastic and can be recycled.

It can be a bit confusing. The easy way to tell the difference between soft and hard plastic is scrunch testing.

If you scrunch plastic in your hand and it forms its shape again, it’s hard plastic. If it squishes into a ball, it’s soft plastic. Easy.
