Christmas Devotional

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in

the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5)

"I am the light of the world." (John 8:12)

“ You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid-

den. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp

stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so

shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your

Father in heaven." (Matt. 5:14-16)

I love to look at Christmas lights. One of my favorite memories as a kid

in New Jersey was helping my dad put Christmas lights up outside.

There was just something about those multi-colored lights piercing

through the cold, dark winter nights that made Christmas extra special.

When our kids were small we enjoyed riding through town and seeing

all the Christmas displays in yards - clear are the memories of the smiles

those lights brought to our family. I'm quite sure many of you do simi-

lar things and have similar memories.

What is the fascination with Christmas lights? For one, they are beauti-

ful to look at. Knowing how much effort went into each display greatly

enhances the beauty. There is great creativity behind some of the dis-

plays. Have you ever seen lights synchronized with the Trans-Siberian

Orchestra??? Awesome!!

I believe the fascination with Christmas lights is deeper than that,

though. I believe our fascination with lights is stated in the first two pas-

sages above from the Gospel of John. We talk about the “God-place” in

our hearts quite regularly and with good reason–there is truth to the

statement. We see above that Jesus is the light of the world, and praise

be to God!, the darkness cannot overcome it!

Also remember from the last verse (Matt. 5:14-16) that all of us carry the

light of Jesus with us every day. Wherever we go we have the power

from God to shine for Him in the words we say and the deeds we do.

Hope you and your family have a safe and very Merry Christmas!

- Richard
