    Samson Young (b.1979) is one ofHong Kongs most sought-aftercomposers today. With formal

    training in music composition, aneye for visuals and a keen interestin emergent technologies, Younghas been known to combine hisdiverse expertise into uniquelyintermedia experiences. His worksare fundamentally informed by anengagement with new cultural-

    technological paradigms, yetdeeply grounded in the classicalmusical tradition. Youngs creative

    output spans the widest possiblerange: from composition fororchestra and gameboys, toamusement ride-turned-soundinstallation, to ensembles of ipadand iphones, to multimedia music

    theatre. Described by Sequenza21 as epic, dark and fun, a senseof play that comes from breakingdown preconceived boundariesunies all of his work.

    Young belongs to a new breedof composer-artists whose workspeak to communities acrossdisciplinary divides. In 2007,Young became the rst from HongKong to receive the BloombergEmerging Artist Award with hisaudio-visual project the HappiestHour. In 2009, CNNs global

    portal CNNgo named him oneof the top 20 people to watchin Hong Kong. Young was HongKong Sinfoniettas artist associatein the 2008/09 season, andsince then he has maintaineda close relationship with theorchestra, working in the capacityof composer-director in a rangeof multimedia productions. Theseinclude: Electric Kinderszenen, apiano-installation project featuringColleen Lee; Box of Revelation, amultimedia rendition of MessiaensQuatuor pour la n du temps; and

    the popular Know-Your concertseries.

    Young is a regular guest at festivalsaround the globe, including:Sydney Springs International NewMusic Festival (Australia 2001),

    the Canberra International MusicFestival (Australia 2008), ISCMWorld Musid Days (Australia2010); the Bowdoin InternationalMusic Festival (US 2004), Bangon a Can Music Summer MusicFestival (US 2005), Perspectives

    International Festival of MediaArt (US 2009); InternationalesMusikinstitut Darmstadt (Germany2006); Dark Music Days(Iceland 2008); Kuala LumpurContemporary Music Festival(Malaysia 2009); MicrowaveInternational New Media Arts

    Festival (HK 2004), OctoberContemporary (HK 2007 and2009), Le French May (HK 2004and 2009), and the Hong KongArts Festival (HK 2009 and 2010).His music received performances byHong Kong Sinfonietta, New JerseySymphony Orchestra, London NASHEnsemble, City Chamber Orchestraof Hong Kong, Bang on a Can andsummer institute fellows, Networkfor New Music, New MillenniumEnsemble, SO Percussion, SydneySong Company, Hong Kong NewMusic Ensemble, among others.

    Young is currently a Ph.D fellow atPrinceton University, and an assistantprofessor in Critical Intermedia Art at

    the School of Creative Media, CityUniversity of Hong Kong. His mentorsinclude Chan Hing-yan and electronicmusic pioneer Paul Lanksy.

    The Hong Kong New MusicEnsemble is a chamber ensemble,formed in 2008. The HKNMEpresents the best new music inHong Kong by local Hong Kongcomposers, Asian composers andalso by important internationalgures. It intends to foster interestinginterdisciplinary collaborations,

    and to present the highest qualitycontemporary music to Hong Kongaudiences on a regular basis.

    In October 2008 members of theHong Kong New Music Ensemble

    were resident at the ShanghaiConservatory. Since 2009 theHKNME has presented regularconcerts in Hong Kong, with toursMainland China, Malaysia (to theMalaysian Contemporary MusicFestival) and Singapore. The HKNMEwill be featured at the 2010 NewVision Arts Festival and in 2011 will

    tour to Australia, Taiwan, Singapore,Thailand and Cambodia.
