Ce EP comprend quatre pièces enregistrées live en studio et dévoile ainsi un avant-goût de Solo Recordings Volume 2, dont la sortie est prévue en mars 2014. Steve Hill s’est prêté au même exercice que sur l’opus Solo Recordings Volume 1: une guitare, sa voix, une grosse caisse, des cymbales hi-hat et d’autres percussions au pied. Il pousse d’ailleurs l’expérience plus loin en y intégrant un harmonica et une caisse claire, le tout enregistré live seul dans son studio, tel un homme-orchestre. Le Volume 1 lui a d’ailleurs valu cinq trophées au 11e Gala Lys Blues, notamment dans la catégorie album blues de l’année, le prix du Best Self-Produced CD à l’International Blues Challenge de Memphis et une nomination au prix Juno pour Blues Album of the Year. Steve Hill followed the same process for this EP as he did for Solo Recordings Volume 1: using a guitar, his voice, a bass drum, hi-hat and other percussions at his feet. This time though, he pushed the envelope even further by adding a harmonica and a snare drum – all recorded live, alone in his studio as a one-man band. Volume 1 racked up the Best Self-Produced CD award at the Memphis International Blues Challenge. It also earned him five trophies at the 11th gala Lys Blues, most notably in the Blues Album of the Year category, and a Juno nomination for Blues Album of the Year.

The one-man band talents of Steve Hill has been presented more than 150 times across Canada, the United States and Europe. His tour continues this winter.

The beauty of the music of Quartette is evident in spades on their latest work, Rocks and Roses. Cindy Church, Caitlin Hanford, Gwen Swick and Sylvia Tyson have outdone themselves in this collection of original tunes celebrating their twentieth anniversary as a group. From the gorgeous R&B lament “Sweet Agony” and the Appalachian hints of “Arkansas Travelogue” to bittersweet “I’ll Keep You in My Heart” and jazzy “Crybaby,” the work of these four marvelous singer/songwriters covers exquisite territory. They have circled the songwriting wagon to create a lovely work of art. Extraordinary vocal harmonies are the icing on the cake. The recording has been insightfully shepherded along by producer Danny Greenspoon. Bonus retrospective disc included.

This reissue of Girl Trouble’s 1988 debut album, Hit It Or Quit It [KLP229], includes eleven original songs, one Northwest classic (“Steppin’ Out” by Paul Revere & The Raiders), and two bonus tracks. To keep the energy level up and the over-production level down, these songs were recorded “live” (using the band’s plywood speaker cabinets and a drum set purchased for $70 from the Sears surplus store) with only an occasional added guitar or vocal track. With the minimal pounding of Bon’s drums, the steady cool of Dale on bass, the buzzsaw scream from Kahuna’s Ouija guitar, and the rabid rock ‘n’ roll stylings of K.P. Kendall, Girl Trouble continues playing throughout the Northwest, 30-plus years on.

Drawn Ship is Lyn Heinemann (guitars & vocals), Trent Hopton (guitars & vocals) and Gregg Steffensen (drums). Formed in 2010 by Heinemann and Steffensen, the band established its career as a two-piece, and released Low Domestic in 2011. They toured, and decided to add another player who would fit with their minimalist, intentional approach. The duo invited Heinemann’s long-time collaborator Trent Hopton to join them on guitar. In 2013, Drawn Ship recorded Ghost Weight, the sophomore 10-song album featuring vo-cals by Hannah Georgas, Leah Abramson (The Abramson Singers), and Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother).

Graph Rabbit’s debut album Snowblind is a cinematic concept record in which an unnamed character wan-ders through a surreal, minimalist snowscape, continually falling in and out of sleep, following birds through fields, arguing with a river and eventually just surrendering to the silence of snowfall. This album begins and ends in a world of its own making. Snowblindness is an actual medical condition caused by over exposure to sunlight in snowy fields; it’s symptoms include hazy vision and halos. With this concept, Graph Rabbit are taking the blank stares of their formative decade’s tuned-out space-cadets like J. Mascis and Cobain to a Zen-like extreme. With a gorgeous high falsetto as sincere as it is otherworldly, singer/guitarist Austin Dono-hue deftly carries the album’s ethereal theme from its bewildered start to its snowy finish. With Shy Kedmi on analog synths, Graph Rabbit combines finger-picked acoustic guitar and pulsing synth arpeggios into a sound that defies the typical associations of either of those elements. The music of Brooklyn duo ERAAS creates an entirely self-contained world – an illusory, mysterious, at times supernatural realm that conjures a sense of suspense while being seductive. From the brief dialogue that precedes the pummeling beats of opener “Looking Glass” to the closing hiss and crackle of the title track, Initiation represents a coming of age for the band. For anyone who’s heard their 2012 self-titled debut album, Initiation is the culmination of the different themes explored there, honed, refined, pushed further and fashioned into its own unique world; a weird and alluring junction of ghostly atmospheres, punishing percussion, spectral vocals, phonography and sound design, all interwoven into a captivating atmosphere that is distinctively ERAAS’ own.

Post-punk leaning trio Soviet Soviet were born in 2008 on the Adriatic coast of Pesaro, Italy by Alessandro Costantini (vocalist/guitarist), Andrea Giometti (lead vocalist/bassist) and Alessandro Ferri (drums). For the past year, the trio have converted that immediacy from the stage into a proper studio, honing and fine tun-ing the production on their debut album, Fate. Fate continues the path of past releases, but with a tighter ferocity and sense of confidence in their unique sound within the post-punk genre. The guitar has more bite, the bass glows with a deeper tone and the drums are as steady and punchy as ever. While post-punk is the easy descriptor, Soviet Soviet’s lens of the genre is much wider, grabbing from coldwave, art punk and more, figuring out a way to make something fresh

Raised around the drum since he was a boy, Wayne Silas, Jr. has sung with some of the greatest Pow-Wow groups of the last twenty years and has grown into a respected songmaker. Infinite Passion represents Wayne’s skills as a composer and as a singer as he merges the singing traditions of the past with the trends of today. In celebration of its 35th anniversary, Mondo is pleased to present the soundtrack to John Carpenter’s Hal-loween. This release features the most comprehensive version of the soundtrack, never before released on vinyl.

Featuring an array of Chicago heavyweights, this limited edition release is not your average solo album. As the album title suggests, this is a uniquely collaborative effort from a diverse group of individuals: prolific poet Marvin Tate, multi-instrumentalist (& longtime Wilco member) LeRoy Bach, Angel Olsen (Jagjaguwar Records), and Tim Kinsella (the eccentric voice behind Joan of Arc, Cap’n Jazz, Owls, & Make Believe).

Jorma Whittaker’s first solo release since his 2001 debut on Secretly Canadian. With the help of his backup band Heavy Hometown, the Marmoset front man has produced the most accomplished, soulful, and down-right menacing album of his career.

Lincoln, NE is a rather unlikely setting for a band such as For Against to have been birthed from, yet over 25 years ago they emerged with a sound unlike anything else happening this side of the UK. Garnering comparisons to early Factory Records and Joy Division, For Against formed in 1984, finally releasing their first LP, Echelons, in 1987 with Independent Project Records. The album was met with critical acclaim and the band toured behind it to much success. Their second LP, December, was released the following year to equally rave reviews and significant College Radio play. The band quickly lost momentum as key members parted ways to form other projects. As the line up shifted over the next few years, their label released a col-lection of decidedly more experimental demos, titled In the Marshes. Long out of print, this is the first time that you can purchase all three of the bands earliest and most defining recordings as a complete box set, not to be sold individually.

‘Preparations’ is the first record to be released on Tri Angle by Fis. Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Fis has steadily been building a name for himself on the underground as a producer to keep an eye on. Having already put out a number of very limited edition and very well received releases through a handful of drum and bass oriented labels, ‘Preparations’ finds Fis at a point in his music making career where he’s ready to be introduced to a wider audience and confirm why websites like Resident Advisor have had things like this to say about him in the past; ‘A producer that has suddenly appeared, rather fully-formed, doing something completely individual, sounding like absolutely no one else.’ It’s pretty difficult to explain exactly what Fis sounds like. Drawing upon a rich history of New Zealand customs and periods of heavy meditation for inspiration, Fis’s tracks have the ability to completely disorientate and absorb the listener, creating rhythms that constantly seem to be cannibalizing one another. ‘Preparations’ feels forward thinking in the extreme and yet entirely elemental and strangely ancient.

Tycho’s Past Is Prologue, pressed on vinyl for the first time, has a storied history. The tracks began as Sunrise Projector, Tycho’s 2004 full-length debut on Gammaphone records; the record was then expanded and reissued in 2006 as Past Is Prologue on Merck records; and now, Ghostly International is reissuing Tycho’s original masterwork, re-introducing graphic designer / producer Scott Hansen’s musical universe: a lush, expansive imaginary landscape of sepia-toned keyboards, warm downtempo beats, and mile after mile of sun-dappled beauty.

The legendary Italian band Goblin recently reformed and went back into the studio to re-record 4 classic tracks exclusively for this EP. Treating the originals with the reverence they deserve but updating them to sound more in line with their current live set up. we couldn’t be more thrilled to be exclusively releasing this EP to support their current world tour. What better than revisiting an old friend? Revisiting that old friend with a new sense of vigor and urgency!

Eating Out is the crunchy, distorted, pop-oriented project of Nü Sensae drummer Daniel Pitout. The big dis-torted guitar riffs and heartfelt melodies of Pitout’s brainchild are a notable departure from Nü Sensae’s roar-ing assault. But Eating Out also has the proud distinction of being a Vancouver supergroup of sorts. While Pi-tout assumes the songwriting duties and the accompanying positions of guitarist and vocalist, fellow Sensae Brody McKnight rounds out the guitar department, White Lung vocalist Mish Way lends her bass skills, and Peace’s Geoff Dembicki fills in on drums. While vestiges of each can be heard in Eating Out, Pitout’s songs owe more to girl-grunge groups of the early nineties than to any of his co-conspirators’ primary projects.

There couldn’t be a better title than “Surf N Turf” for a split 7” between Portland, Oregon’s Guanta-namo Baywatch and Nashville, Tennessee’s Natural Child. While Guantanamo Baywatch bask in the coastal traditions of surf rock, Natural Child deliver the backwoods boogie of the landlocked Southern interior. To be fair, there’s much more to GB than vibrato-soaked Mosrite guitars. The recent Suicide Squeeze signees offset their Dick Dale-styled twang with the trashy hybrid of garage punk and surf rock spewed out by The Mummies. Sure, “Raunch Stomp” is in step with the Ventures’ tremolo-picking tradition, but a song like “Love This Time” explains why the band spent time on the boisterous Dirtnap Records roster. Neither is Natural Child to be mistaken for mere good ol’ boy sons of Skynyrd. Though they’ve certainly got a knack for a country-fried ballad (as evidenced on “Don’t Wake The Baby”) or a sweetly stoned fuzzed-out lead on guitar, the trio are better suited for sharing a beer-soaked bar stage with fellow Nashevillians JEFF the Brotherhood and Heavy Cream than headlining the mainstage at the state fair.

Following Wolf People’s critically acclaimed 2013 release, “Fain,” comes this 4-track 12” featuring two of the album’s most accomplished songs and two brand new tracks. “When the Fire is Dead in the Grate” has quickly been established as a fan-favorite throughout venues during their European tour. Stewart Lee described the song as “.... the album’s first stone classic, a funky folk-metal work-out that trails off into a compellingly extended coda, both guitarists circling and dovetailing and spiral-ing.” A brand new track, “Become the Ground,” breaks new ground for the band, being, perhaps, their most obviously folk-influenced song to date. It’s a beautiful duet between lead singer Jack Sharp and guest vocalist Nicola Keary before the song breaks into a swirling psychedelic jam. The B-side of the 12” is made up of the first track fans heard on Fain, “All Returns”, but now coupled with “All Returns Part II”, the song’s original extended outro. It’s Wolf People at their best, locking into a masterful groove, razor-sharp guitars lines interlocking and intertwining.

“’This Could Be A Bridge’ is a slack rock epic, building to buzzy crescendos with rubbery riffs that could have been lifted from a Siamese Dream B-side, melodramatic lyrics, and quick flashes of guitar god soloing from Stern. They’ve nailed their thrilling version of a classic indie rock sound.” - Pitchfork

Originally released in 1979, One Step Beyond, is the opening salvo from Madness, a band who celebrated ska, rocksteady and pop sensibilities into their own nutty sound. This collection sounds as fresh today as it did when it was release nearly 35 years ago.

On the follow-up to their debut, One Step Beyond, Madness continued to hone their nutty sound.

Following on from last year’s ‘Nebula Dance’ album, Ital Tek comes with a 25 minute EP that frees itself from easy catagorisation. And the 160bpm cross-pollination of footwork and drum & bass is just the jump off point.

After spending the last year navigating 60,000 miles of patchwork American highways, these songs were borne from kudzu forests, engine drone, missed exits, AM static. Turchi’s “My Time Ain’t Now” showcases a wide pallette of musical influences, carving stories from the landscape they’ve come to know all too well.
