    Canada Day A Success

You are never too old to sail! Pat Onions, 92 yrs old, at the helm of Pei Hu on Canada Day 2019, with Jim Dickson, on the left and Ken Cork in the middle.

Canada Day was a fun day for both racers and those at the after celebrations. Racing, Cruising and Clubhouse worked hard to make sure the day was a success. Some excellent music and food! Thanks to all who came and took part. Chris Fulton, Cory Boyer and Ron Tambeau

Clubhouse Report Thank you to the Clubhouse Committee and to all those who volunteer for the Tuesday and Thursday Race night pizza and bar. Everything is working out well. Cory Boyer,
Clubhouse

Important Reminders Here are just a few reminders for members to keep our Club a safe and welcoming for everyone: • Keep your boat speed in the

harbour to dead slow to reduce the risk of collisions with other boats. If you are short handed under windy conditions, don’t hesitate to ask another member for help with your dock lines - slow boats are difficult to steer!

    • Drive slowly down in the parking lot and down to the point.

    • Help take care of our lawn areas - Please keep your vehicle only on the gravel.

    • Remember there is a 20 minute parking limit along the point for loading and unloading only.

    • Pets are welcome on the grounds, but please be sure

they are on a leash. Also make sure you pick up after them and keep them away from the sail folding areas. Thank you!

  • Harbour We continue returning the harbour to normal. Repairs still need to be completed to the docks, pump out system, and electrical systems. The point pump out is functional. A temporary pump out work around is in place. The pump out system is expected to be fully operational by July 20. A vacuum cage has been installed at the pedestal. See picture below. For optimal suction, start pump out and wait until vacuum reaches -15 psi before opening the valve on the vacuum hose. A scuba diver will assist with dock

repair and mapping out the Pier 1 anchor system to facilitate anchor chain adjustments. Michel Mino,
Harbour Master

Grounds Report Our summer student, Kris Smith, has started working. The conditions this year have been a little daunting, but we’re starting to make headway. The ground cover leading up to the clubhouse is slowly filling in. A little reminder that if you notice dry plants, please give them some water. The clay along Tanzer row is due to be scraped down, topsoil spread, and sod laid this week. It will need a week of regular watering to get established and then we’ll finally have our shaded picnic area back. Another project that needs to be looked at is pruning the trees around the clubhouse. We’re

losing our view! If anyone is interested in helping, please give me a shout. Thanks! Brenda Walsh,
Grounds

Best Summer Read: Your NBYC Member Handbook

Now that boating/sailing season is underway, we urge you to pick up your 2019 NBYC Member Handbook. You can get your copy inside the lower entrance to the clubhouse.

The booklet contains a wealth of useful and essential information, including a calendar of events, a list of members and their contact information, the fee structure, a host of helpful hints, a summary of important club rules that we are all accountable to respect, and the Constitution that governs the operation of the club. For your maximum enjoyment, read your member handbook this month! A big thank you to Marc Kuzyk for compiling the edits from the Executive and Jill Faulkner for editing and designing the handbook. Stephen Glass,
Commodore

Log Book As early ship’s record were inscribed on shingles (cut from logs) and hinged so that they opened like a book, the name “Log-book” was logical and lasted to this day. The O’Shea Sprint (The Un-race):
An Overview The 11th Annual O’Shea Sprint (the Un-race) is set for the afternoon of Sat. Aug. 17.

This race began in 2008 as a way to race a few similar-sized boats in a friendly event to honour the memory of Mike O’Shea. It also freed participants from the burden of a handicap system. As it evolved, we implemented a penalty system for previous winners to level the playing field. There have been a variety of winners over the years and too many stories (some even true) to count. For those who have never participated, this event bears little resemblance to proper yacht racing that you see on Tuesday nights. There are few (if any) rules, no protests, no fees, no prizes. Previous victors are heavily penalized at the start line and those who are not avid racers will be given lots of room at the start and on the course. After the race we meet at the Callander Tavern (Lulu’s) for dinner. Many have claimed the tavern get-together is the best reason to hold the race, but this is still being hotly debated. We encourage all those who do not race to consider getting involved. This day amounts to a fun sail, dinner with friends, and

a few laughs. If there is a down side to this event after 10 years, we haven’t found it yet. In the next couple of weeks all sailboat owners will receive an invitation via email with a description of this year’s event. Then shortly before the race the course and penalties for past winners will be announced. Please keep this date open on your calendar and consider joining us on the Bay. Dan Faulkner
