Coventry population in employment by age

Interpreting the dataThe data presented in the following charts and discussed in the related commentary are estimates taken from responses from working age Coventry residents to the national ‘Annual Population Survey’ conducted by the Office for National Statistics. They are taken from five surveys conducted on a rolling annual basis from April 2007 – March 2008 to April 2011 - March 2012, for each of the five survey results between 1,100 and 1,200 Coventry residents of working age responded.

The true proportions amongst all working age Coventry residents (of whom there are about 208,000 in total) lie within a certain margin of error (a ‘confidence interval’) either side of the proportions found in the survey results. Due to this, the extent to which the survey results have changed between 2007-8 and 2011-12 (and even the fact that they have changed at all) may not accurately represent real changes in the proportions who are unemployed, employed and economically active amongst all working age residents of Coventry.

Statistical tests* were conducted on the survey data to determine whether we can robustly conclude that the difference between the results from the 2007-8 and 2011-12 surveys are a true reflection of the real story amongst all working age residents or whether they could be due to the sample of people who were surveyed at that time. The results of the tests are discussed briefly in the commentary.

* The ‘two proportion Z test’.

Between 2007 - 8 and 2011 - 2012 the proportion of all working age people in employment who were working full time showed no significant change. In 2011-12 about three quarters of all Coventry residents in employment were working on a full time basis – a similar proportion to what it was in 2007-8. A statistical test of change over the period showed that the survey results gave no evidence that there was a change in the proportion working full time.

The total number of Coventry residents in employment fell between 2007-8 and 2011-12 and the number working full time fell at a similar rate in proportion to overall employment – hence the proportion of all in employment who are working on a full time basis has stayed the same (even though the number in employment is smaller).

In 2007-8 residents aged 25 – 49 had the highest proportion of those in employment working on a full time basis (78%) – younger (68%) and older residents (67%) had lower proportions. By 2011-12 the survey results give an indication that residents aged 50 and over in employment worked on a full time basis to a similar degree to residents aged 25 – 49.

Age

Between 2007-8 and 2011-12 the survey results suggest little change in the proportion of those in employment working full time amongst residents aged under 50. In 2007-8 68% of residents aged 16 – 24 in employment were working full time, in 2011-12 the response was 65%. In 2007-8 78% of residents aged 25 – 49 in employment were working full time, in 2011-12 the response was 77%. These changes are not significant enough to conclude that there was a reduction in the proportion of all employed residents in the city in these age groups working full time – statistical tests did not find a significant change.

The survey results suggest that there may have been a change in full time working patterns amongst older residents aged 50 and over. The survey results were, 67% of respondents aged 50 and over in employment said they were working of a full time basis in 2007-8 compared to 74% in 2011-12 – a 7 percentage point increase. This gives some indication that an increased proportion of all Coventry residents aged 50+ in employment were working on a full time basis. However, a statistical test found that this 7 point increase in the survey results was not sufficient to be sure that this represented the picture in general amongst all residents aged 50+

2008 2009 2010 2011 2012

The survey results for part time employment are a mirror image of those for full time employment. Analysing the results for part time employment as well as full time employment allows us to clearly see the picture for each in isolation.

Between 2007 - 8 and 2011 - 2012 the proportion of all working age people in employment who were working part time showed no significant change. In 2011-12 about a quarter of all Coventry residents in employment were working on a part time basis – a similar proportion to what it was in 2007-8. A statistical test of change over the period showed that the survey results gave no evidence that there was a change in the proportion working part time.

The total number of Coventry residents in employment fell between 2007-8 and 2011-12 and the number working part time fell at a similar rate in proportion to overall employment – hence the proportion of all in employment who are working on a part time basis has stayed the same (although fewer are in employment overall).

In 2007-8 residents aged 25 – 49 had the lowest proportions of those in employment working on a part time basis (22%) – younger (32%) and older residents (33%) had higher proportions. By 2011-12 the survey results give an indication that residents aged 50 and over in employment worked on a part time basis to a similar degree to residents aged 25 – 49

Between 2007-8 and 2011-12 the survey results suggest little change in the proportion of those in employment working part time amongst residents aged under 50. In 2007-8 32% of residents aged 16 – 24 in employment were working full time, in 2011-12 the response was 34%. In 2007-8 22% of residents aged 25 – 49 in employment were working full time, in 2011-12 the response was 23%. These changes are not significant enough to conclude that there was an increase in the proportion of all employed residents in the city in these age groups working full time – statistical tests did not find a significant change.

The survey results suggest that there may well have been a change in part time working patterns amongst older residents aged 50 and over. The survey results were, 33% of respondents aged 50 and over in employment said they were working of a full time basis in 2007-8 compared to 26% in 2011-12 – a 7 percentage point decrease. This gives some indication that a decreased proportion of all Coventry residents aged 50+ in employment were working on a full time basis. However, a statistical test found that this 7 point decrease in the survey results was not sufficient to be sure that this represented the picture in general amongst all residents aged 50+
