RITTRITTDevelopment Status of Galileo System

Galileo system is the European satellite navigation system. The Galileo Space Segment will comprise a constellation of a total of 30 Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites, of which 3 are spares. So far only one test satellite is in orbit.

It’s estimated that the full operational capability of Galileo system might be achieved in 2012.

The EU and US have officially announced that new GPS and Galileo satellites will jointly employ an improved design for their civil navigation signals, ensuring their interoperability. The resulting GPS L1C signal and Galileo L1F signal have been optimized to use a multiplexed binary offset carrier (MBOC) waveform. Future receivers using the MBOC signal should be able to track the GPS and/or Galileo signals with higher accuracy in challenging environments that include multipath, noise, and interference.

RITTRITTGalileo ICD specification

The Galileo Open Service Interface Control Document (ICD specification) is the basis of all the modifications made in C.S0022-B.

This specification ( Galileo OS Signal in Space ICD (OS SIS ICD), Draft 0, Galileo Joint Undertaking, May 23rd, 2006. ) is fully available on the following Galileo Joint Undertaking web Site: http://www.galileoju.com

Within the section OS SIS ICD, it can be downloaded for free. For any question or remarks please contact:

RITTRITTFeasibility Study of Galileo in LBS

Feasibility study for Galileo in LBS have been done in 3GPP. For detail analyses, please refer to 3GPP 23.835 v1.0.0 “Study into Applicability of GALILEO in LCS”.

Note: The Galileo standardization work in 3GPP have been started since 2002. So far the stage 3 spec RRLP(Rel-7) in GERAN( equal to the C.S0022 in 3GPP2) have been finished to support Galileo positioning method. The stage 3 spec RLC (Rel-7) in RAN will also be finished soon.

The highlight of this technical report is the performance analyses of Galileo system on LBS based on some simulations hypotheses and results .

It is concluded from the technical report 23.835 that the use of GALILEO either alone or in association with GPS greatly improves the availability and the accuracy of the LBS Services in difficult situations such as urban or indoors environments where a limited number of satellites are visible and signal can be greatly attenuated.

RITTRITTRITT Work Plan

There are two significant problems to be solved with the addition of Galileo positioning method into C.S0022-Ba. Backward Compatibility of C.S0022-Bb. Definitions of Request and Response Element for Galileo

RITT will bring in new contributions focused on the second problem listed above in the following meetings.

RITT would, however, like to encourage participants to bring in questions and issues related to Galileo positioning for discussion to help move the work item forward.
