All-Time History vs. Maine Sunday’s matchup is the third contest between South Carolinaand Maine, who joined the ECHL at the start of the 2018-19 season. In their inaugural year, SC came to Portland during early March for a weekend series and the two clubs split a pair of meetings. Maine took the first game by a score of 4-1, while the Stingrays earned an overtime win the following night by a 2-1 final. The Mariners are affiliated with the NHL’s New York Rangers and AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. Sunday’s game is the only time the two clubs will face each other during the 2019-20 regular season.

Askew Comes Alive Forward Cam Askew had his most productive offensive run of the season last week, scoring seven points on a goal and six assists in the Stingrays’ three wins and was later named the ECHL’s Player of the Week. He has continued his offensive dominance this week, scoring on the power play during Tuesday morning’s game against Atlanta before netting the game-winning goal on Saturday during the third period of the Rays’ 3-1 defeat of Worcester. Askew now has 25 points overall with 11 goals and 14 helpers in 50 games for SC this season.

Marsh Makes A Splash Forward Alec Marsh scored goals in all of his first four games with South Carolina after joining the team on Feb. 18. He then added an assist in the team’s most recent outing on Saturday in Worcester, dishing the puck to forward Scott Davidson for his first pro goal during the third period. A native of Bridgewater, N.J., Marsh played three ECHL games earlier in the season for Worcester, but has found his scoring touch with the Stingrays in his second stint in the league during his rookie year. Prior to his tenue with SC, Marsh totaled 27 points in 34 games with the SPHL’s Fayetteville Marksmen on 12 goals and 15 assists.

Novak Takes Control of Team Scoring Lead With seven assists in his last five games, forward Max Novak has taken over the Stingrays team scoring lead for 2019-20. The Oak Ridge, N.J. native has totaled 15 goals and 36 assists while appearing in all of the team’s 57 games on the year. Most recently, Novak has earned assists on goals by Cam Askew in back-to-back games this week. The attacker’s 11 power play points (4g, 7a) are second-most on the Rays this season behind Dan DeSalvo (5g, 7a).

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYFantastic February The Stingrays reached 10 wins in a calendar month for the first time this season by closing out the month of February with victories in eight of their last nine games. South Carolina racked up wins over Orlando, Norfolk, Adirondack, Greenville, Jacksonville, Atlanta and Worcester last month helping to continue their first place position in the South Division standings with just over a month remaining in the 2019-20 regular season. The Rays also finished a perfect 5-0-0 away from North Charleston during the second month of 2020.

Whitney Turns Heads In Return Forward Steve Whitney was reassigned to SC by Hershey last Friday and scored four points last weekend with an assist on Saturday before netting a hat trick on Sunday afternoon. The three-goal performance was his first ECHL hat trick since Feb. 26, 2016 when he was a member of the Norfolk Admirals. Whitney has continued his offensive success with assists in back-to-back outings on Tuesday and Saturday and has totaled six points in four appearances with South Carolina during the past two weeks.

Stingrays Acquire Forward Marly Quince The Stingrays announced the acquisition of forward Marly Quince in a trade with the Reading Royals Tuesday in exchange for future considerations. Quince, 26, appeared in 21 games for Reading this season while scoring seven points on three goals and four assists along with a +7 rating. A native of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Quince began his rookie season earlier this year with the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) and netted nine goals and four assists for 13 points in nine games. Quince played four seasons of college hockey at Clarkson University from 2015-19.

Rays Fall To Atlanta On Education DayEric Neiley scored three straight goals to complete a natural hat trick and give the Atlanta Gladiators a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Wednesday morning during Education Day at the North Charleston Colisuem. Forwards Cam Askew and Alec Marsh each scored during the opening period for South Carolina, while goaltender Parker Milner stopped 27 shots in a losing effort. Neiley netted all three Gladiators’ tallies to erase a 2-0 deficit for Atlanta with two of the strikes coming in the second period before the game-winner at 15:05 of the third.

Rays Extend Win Streak To 7 Games, Clinch Playoff SpotThe first professional goal for defenseman Jesse Lees vaulted the South Carolina Stingrays to an exciting 6-5 win over the Worcester Railers on Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum. Combined with a loss for the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to Atlanta earlier in the day, the Stingrays officially secured themselves a berth in the 2020 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Forward Steve Whitney registered a hat trick in the game for South Carolina, while both Max Novak and Kristofers Bindulis posted three assists apiece and Cam Askew netted a goal and an assist.
