SHOCKER STANDOUTS

Congratulations to Conner Fagan (6th), Madeline McIver (7th) and Kimberly Hernandez Cuen (8th)!

They have been selected by teachers as South Charlotte Standouts for this week. South Charlotte

Standouts are scholarly, honest, optimistic, caring, kind, energetic, and responsible (SHOCKER).

LOST & FOUND

The Lost and Found closet is full of your lost items. Stop by before school, during lunch or after school to look for your lost coat, jacket, shirt, pants, lunchbox, books, etc. March 29, the unclaimed items will be donated to our charity of choice.

FINE ARTS NETWORK $$

Ever wonder where your donations go in the Fine Arts Network??? Here

are just a few items we purchase each year thanks to your donations….

♦ South Charlotte owns over $125,000 in musical equipment! Every

year we purchase new items and pay to maintain these instru-

ments for our students use.

♦ Fine Arts Network (FAN) just spent $10,000 on 2 (yes, only 2) Tu-

bas for band!

♦ Our Orchestra was given a permanent room this year for the first

time! FAN bought a new sound system for the Orchestra Room as

well as all the equipment for that room….this means chairs, music

stands, etc.

♦ FAN spends money annually to bring professional musicians/educators to teach special pro-

grams to our students.

♦ FAN spends approximately $6,000 annually for travel to participate in competitions and events

meaning CMS does not pay for the buses to transport our kids to these events.

♦ FAN spends over $5,000 annually in sheet music and copyrights so our kids have music to play

♦ Between costumes for performances and uniforms for band and orchestra, FAN spends approxi-

mately $7,000 annually

♦ FAN is budgeting for a major purchase next year – new lights for South Charlotte’s cafetorium

stage! The current lights are original to the school and costly to maintain. The new system will

cost between $15,000 and $20,000. It will be less draining on the schools overall energy costs

and the LED lights are easier less expensive to maintain.

We spend all this and more to keep our Arts department current and fun for our students to learn and

grow. We felt like the parents should know where the money goes to keep this program alive at South

Charlotte and to thank each and every family that has helped make it possible!!!

Thomas Built Buses Is Looking for School Bus Drivers who Go the Extra Mile

Children Can Honor Unsung Heroes and Win Laptop Computer in Annual ‘Driver of the Year’

Essay Contest

High Point, N.C. – School bus drivers take seriously their charge to deliver their passengers to and from school safely and on time, but many of them literally go the extra mile. Thomas Built Buses asks: Do you know drivers who are making a difference? Does your driver put in extra effort to make you feel secure on the bus? Or nurture a spirit of giving by help-ing organize food, toy and book drives? Does she know your name or start each day with a friendly greeting? Does he help celebrate special milestones? These are just some examples of heartwarming and impactful actions by previous “Children’s Choice School Bus Driver of the Year” winners in the annual essay contest sponsored by Thomas Built Buses, a leading manufacturer of school buses in North America. “A school bus driver’s primary responsibility is to get students safely to school and home again. The essay contest provides a platform for us to shine a light on drivers who do this and so much more,” says Kelley Platt, president and CEO of Thomas Built Buses. “Many of the essays describe drivers who have become champions, admired mentors, trusted guardians and dear friends, and we want to recognize those drivers in a big way for the meaningful role they play in children’s lives.” Over the years Thomas Built has received thousands of heartfelt essays, from children across the U.S. and Canada, sharing stories of bus drivers’ overwhelming compassion and extraordinary actions that help make their day brighter. “She is like my grandmother, and I even call her nana sometimes,” wrote fifth grader Mauriene Ann, who nominated the 2011 winner, Joyce St. John of Decatur, Ala. A 42-year veteran bus driver, St. John had driven Mauriene’s mom, as well as Mauriene’s four siblings, two of whom had medical issues to which St. John was extra attentive. Now in its seventh consecutive year, students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to submit essays of at least 90 words to nominate their favorite school bus drivers. Through words and pictures, students can describe just what makes their school bus drivers so special. The winning essays will be featured on the Tho-mas Built website when the judging is complete. Entries must be postmarked by June 30, 2012. The child who nominates the grand prize winner will receive a laptop com-puter and $1,000 educational savings bond, and the nominated driver will receive a $1,000 Visa® gift card. Grand prize win-ners and top finalists also will receive Thomas Built Buses jackets and Saf-T-Liner®C2 school bus lunch boxes. To enter the contest, visit www.thomasbus.com/contestfor complete rules and an entry form.

BOYS SOCCER

South Charlotte vs. AG (2-0) March 19, 2012

On Monday, the Boys Soccer Team came out victorious once again with their 3rd win of the season with a score of 2-0 against AG. In the first half, Rudy Vargas had several shots on goal and then with one tremendous blow to the ball, he put in the first goal of the game. Our next goal came from the dy-namic duo of Oliver Leo and Patrick Hogan when Leo directed an unstoppable corner kick towards the goal and Patrick Hogan sunk it in with a powerful header, making the score 2-0. Jacob Culler and Leonardo Faillace had shots on goal also. Goalie Gordon White had a picture perfect diving save in the first half. In the second half the boys were hungry and wanted more so they stepped up their game with multiple shots on goal from Leonardo Faillace, Oliver Leo, Brad Scharf and Ahmad Jackson. Defender Luke Stancombe played a tough game and kept AG’s offense away from our goal along with big kicker Austin Kent who sent multiple powerful shots down the soccer field out of harms way. Pat-

rick Hogan protected the house with a beautiful header. Goalie Jonathon Doerer went in to protect our goal and the game ended in our 3rd shut out!

South Charlotte vs. McClintock (9-1) March 21, 2012

On Wednesday, the Boys Soccer Team had a huge win against McClintock with a final score of 9-1. Leonardo Faillace was our big scorer of the game earning himself a hat trick with 3 goals for the Shockers. Two were with the help of Rudy Vargas and the last one was an example of teamwork at its finest with Jackson Perry passing to Austin Kent and onto Faillace for the goal. McClintock came back and scored with a header. Jacob Culler scored for us next when he tapped the ball that Austin

Kent dribbled down the side for a goal. Jackson Perry

put a beautiful shot in the goal off of a penalty kick mak-ing it 5-1 at the end of the first half. Oliver Leo con-trolled the middle and took multiple corner kicks for the team. Jonathon Doerer had one save under his belt in the first half. Ethan DeSilva was working hard up and down the field. In the second half, Brad Scharf played a physical game, hustling in the middle to distribute the ball to his teammates. Michael Boyajian and Ahmad

Jackson were looking fierce in the middle. Goalie Gordon White came in and had three beautiful saves, two of which he booted away from the goal. Marshall

Courtney was the next to score with a fast goal into the left corner of the net. Sean Oberer then put one in right in front of the net. Timmy Walsh scored by dribbling through three defenders and then into the net for goal. Our last and 9th goal of the night was a fast shot in the net by Austin Kent, assisted by Ciaran Traynor who sent a field kick to Kent. McClintock could not pene-trate our amazing defense made up of Jared Ross,

Ethan DeSilva, Luke Stancombe, Austin Kent and Patrick Hogan who had multiple headers in the game. The boys were giddy with delight on their victory and began their celebration by dumping the water cooler on teammate Timmy Walsh who was all smiles after his 1st goal of the season. Come out and cheer on our Shockers soccer next Wednesday at home against Whitewater. The

more fans, the better we play! Let’s keep the boys 4-0 record going!
