COURSE GUIDE

Wel
com
e Making the decision about what to do after school,
whether to go to college and which course to do is
a difficult one. There are lots of things to consider
such as where has the best courses, who has the best
success rates and are the facilities good enough?
And most importantly, what will make you stand out
when applying for jobs or university.
At South and City College Birmingham, we make
solving those problems and giving you what you
need to achieve your goals, our goal.
We have excellent success rates that are above
many other colleges and the vast majority of our
students successfully achieve their qualifications.
We have hundreds of practical courses in a wide
range of subjects, and not only do our students get
to learn in excellent facilities with industry standard
equipment, but we are also committed to continuing
to invest in our facilities.
But what makes us really stand out is that we
work non-stop to give all our students additional
opportunities to get ahead, from work experience to
traineeships where you can get hands-on experience
in a real work environment. These opportunities
provide springboards for our students to get jobs,
and are excellent additions for CVs and university
applications.
I hope you’ll find this course guide and our website
useful in making your decision, and I hope to see you
soon at South and City College Birmingham.

Motor vehicle students are adapting a Toyota Celica GT4 motor car to allow wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women gain confidence behind the wheel.
The students have made changes such as stripping out the car, rebuilding it to race specification and adapting it to allow people with life changing illnesses and injuries to be able to drive it.
When the car is completed, the students will form an on-track support team alongside Help for Heroes volunteers when out at race tracks.
So far students have stripped the car out to its bare bones, fitted a roll cage and sodablasted it. The next stage is for it be painted in the Help for Heroes colours by paint and body refinishing students before it goes back to motorsports students who will rebuild it to race specification.
Maciey Goldyn, aged 20, a Diploma in Motorsport Level 3 student said: “This is a really exciting project, not only am I getting great hands on experience in building a race car but I will be helping people who have sustained life changing injuries get out on the race track and enjoy themselves.”

Joe started college on a level two business course; he enjoyed it so much he went on to complete the level 3 course, then a HND and now he is at university on a top-up course to turn his HND into an honours degree.
“I wanted to learn about business and I enjoyed studying - the more I progressed the more I was inspired to go on and succeed.
“Something that stood out for me was the range of business topics we covered such as operations, finance, HR and even law. Whilst on the level two course I had the opportunity to go out on work experience – it gave me the chance to put into practice what I’d learnt.
“It always felt like you were getting something from each lecture. The tutors worked hard, provided good learning materials and they wanted to get the best out of you.

Childcare Level 3 student
Two health and social care students have made it through to the prestigious national final of the WorldSkills UK 2014 Health and Social Care Competitions.
Tara Smith and Rina Begum competed against students from colleges across the country in the regional heats, to win a place in the finals.
They were given life-like scenarios and asked to perform tasks such as providing personal care, checking vital signs and co-working.
If successful in the national competition, they may find themselves competing on behalf of the UK against students from all over the world. Last year, one student competed in the national final, only narrowly missing out from going on to the international competitions in Brazil!
Tara who is studying towards her Health and Social Care Level 3 qualification said: “I can’t put it into words, I was so nervous and I couldn’t have done this without the training and support from the college. This has given me so much confidence.”

Hospitality and catering students have triumphed at the prestigious ‘Salon Culinaire’ where they were competing against other students from all over the UK.
South and City College students won a total of nine medals, including four gold medals, three silver and three bronze as well as a certificate of merit, and awards for best in class and best visiting student.
Over 200 students from colleges across the country including Liverpool, Henley and UCB (previously known as College of Food) competed in the competition which has been running for over 20 years.
Students had to showcase their talents in live classes in the kitchen and the restaurant, in areas such as napkin folding, fish filleting and international cooking.
Mike Hopkins, principal of the college said: “We are very proud of our students. Competitions are a great way to really stretch students’ skills and also boost their confidence in their own abilities.”

“Throughout my course, I’ve been able to develop my plumbing and heating maintenance skills as well as other trades such as plastering and carpentry which come in handy when plumbing.
“I recently won the SkillPlumb regional competition where I had to compete against many other students from colleges around the Midlands. Tom Matthews has just completed a fashion course where he had the opportunity to undertake work experience with Next, Britain’s Next Top Model and The Clothes Show. Tom will be going to the prestigious London College of Fashion next year.
“The main reason I wanted come to South and City College Birmingham was because of the dedicated fashion centre. I was impressed with the resources available - there was variety of textiles and specialist equipment that no other college had.
“The course itself is quite project based − I worked on collections from start to finish with the main focus being manufacturing. I did a lot of sourcing and experimenting with fabrics, patterns, sewing and production samples.
“The tutors are so helpful and offer support whenever you need it. They’ve worked in the industry too so they’re able to give you real insight and advice on how to pursue your future career.”

I thInk the standard of the students’ work Is excellent - much better than what I expected from a college. I have been blown away by the presentatIon.
Edith Webster - Director of The Hair Company in Solihull
Khalid enjoyed doing hair, but never considered it as a career until he saw an advert for a course at the college. He decided to give it a go and has never looked back since.
“When I was in school I had no idea that I wanted to be a hairdresser. I didn’t want to work behind a desk and thought this might be a great opportunity. I started on a level 1 course where I learnt the basic skills all hairdressers should have.
“I was really determined to do well and I put in a lot of time and effort – and because of this the tutors really helped and supported me as well.
“During my course I had great opportunities such as doing the hair for the models at The Clothes Show and I went to London for a work placement where I stayed in a 5 star hotel and learnt from industry leaders.
”I really loved my time at the college. The really great thing is the atmosphere; it is accepting and open. Everyone is happy, I also love the tutors because they helped me so much.”

Danielle’s goal was to become a personal trainer but she lacked confidence. After being accepted on to the level 3 course, her confidence soon grew and she is now helping clients achieve their goals.
“My knowledge developed a lot throughout the course. I learnt so much about the body that not only have I been able to apply it to training other people, but I have massively changed my own training behaviours; I am stronger and fitter than I have ever been.
“However, it was my confidence levels that saw the biggest change. Working with my tutor and other students made me realise I actually do have the knowledge, skill and the personality to be a good personal trainer.
“During my course I worked with a male case study, and I managed to get him to achieve all of his nutritional and exercise goals; I am still training him now!
“I can’t thank my tutors and fellow students enough for helping me overcome my shyness and helping to build my confidence, I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Retail Fusion, a sweet shop set up by retail students at the college, has been a roaring success in its first year.
The students initially set up the shop to apply the knowledge of retail they had learnt in lessons in a real life situation. They have been involved in all aspects of buying, selling, marketing and advertising.
The team have been providing confectionaries for audiences at events which have been going on around the college, and in the five months Retail Fusion has been trading at the college, the sweet shop raised nearly £2300 pounds of revenue, with £1200 coming in as gross profit.
Running the shop has given students hands-on skills in merchandising and display, selling and customer service, as well as being responsible for stock control, security, sales records and handling cash.
Meskerm Risome, a retail level 2 student said: “I have been with the college almost two years and this project has been very exciting to take part in. It’s given me a lot of knowledge and I’ve been able to apply my skills and gain practical experience.”
