FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 12, 2017 South Dakota Symphony Orchestra performing student compositions Eight students and adults from the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and the Sisseton community get to hear their compositions come alive on Thursday, Sept. 14 and Friday, Sept. 15, as professional musicians from the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) perform the works for audiences in Sisseton and Agency Village. The Dakota Wind Quintet performances will feature the works of Sisseton High School students Ricky Albright and Garrett Lawrence and Sisseton-area resident Bryan Akipa. The Dakota String Quartet performances will feature the works of Sisseton High School student Samuel Williams, student Alannah Lawrence and Sisseton area residents Derrick Lawrence, Shira Tomboulian and Chris Wolcott. The free performances are scheduled for: Thursday, Sept. 14, 7 p.m., Sisseton Performing Arts Center (Dakota String Quartet and Dakota Wind Quintet) with all eight musicians present Friday, Sept. 15, 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., Tiospa Zina Tribal School, Agency Village. (Dakota String Quartet) Friday, Sept. 15, 12:30 p.m., Sisseton Wahpeton Tribal Headquarters, Agency Village (Dakota String Quartet). Lunch will be provided beginning at noon. Friday, Sept. 15, 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., Sisseton Middle School and High School (Dakota Wind Quintet) Friday, Sept. 15, 2:15 p.m., Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton (Dakota String Quartet) The eight participants, along with six Black Hills students whose works were performed in that community Sept. 9- 11, teamed up with Chickasaw Composer-in-Residence Jerod Tate and professional musicians from the two SDSO ensembles as part of the Lakota Music Project. The Music Composition Academies engage students in creative expression through music with daily composition lessons and activities emphasizing cultural understanding and finding human commonalities. “It invests in the students themselves, teaching them new skills and building their self-esteem, says Delta David Gier, SDSO music director. “Beyond the individual benefits, the building of bridges between our communities and the creation of cross-cultural understanding through close one-on-one learning is invaluable.” The Lakota Music Project is a long-term collaborative program in partnership between SDSO and the Native American community. ThecoreofSDSOiscomprisedofninefull-timeprofessionalmusiciansthatmakeuptheDakotaStringQuartetandtheDakotaWindQuintet.Musically,SDSOperformswellaboveits$2.3millionbudget.
