SEE-GRID-SCI: Project objectives
Engaging international user communities (meteorology, seismology, environmental protection) and providing application-specific service extensions
Providing infrastructure for new communities
Consolidating actions towards long-term sustainability and European Grid Initiative inclusion
Strengthening the regional and national human network
The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
SEE-GRID-SCI: Horizontal actions: NGIs
Structuring NGIs in all countries in the region Achieve stable and well-established organization and operations, as
well as government recognition Stimulate kick-off of national-level Grid projects Secure membership of all non-EGEE countries in relevant European
Grid bodies
Provide active support for NGI establishment in other developing regions
Public documents: NGI guidelines document, SEE-GRID-2 NGI metrics specification

Political Sustainability: SEERA-EI
"INFRA-2008-3.1: ERA-NET supporting cooperation for research infrastructures in all S&T fields“Likely to start: 1 Jan 2009
Duration: 36 monthsTotal budget: 2 000 000 €Funding from the EC: 1 500 000 €Total funded effort, PMs: 451
The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
SEERA-EI: partnership
Ministry partners + eInfra partners as support
The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
SEERA-EI: objectives
Core Objective – Develop and strengthen the coordination and cooperation of national eInfrastructures programmes in the region of South-East Europe.
The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
SEERA-EI: objectives
O1 - Enable common dialogue and exchange of information between national programme ownersO2 – Analyse state of the art in national programmes O3 - Reduce fragmentation and improve coordination across SEE segment of ERA in field of RI, on the level of national programmes, and avoid creating niches of non-standardised programmesO4 - Facilitate efficient set-up and support for national eInfrastructure programmes, in coordination with common guidelines and regional visionO5 - Enable concrete cooperation of programme owners and common planning and development of join activities, both within project duration and beyond it in long termO6 - Formulate a common vision and strategyO7 – Establish a long-term platform for sustained dialogue between programme owners that will extend beyond project lifetimeO8 – Enable information exchange with rest of ERA, carry out international collaboration activities, and contribute to EU policy on eInfrastructures
The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
SEE region and EGI: perspectives
NGIs are already stable and mature in all countriesRegional network and Grid has strong perspectives for sustainabilityData layer is being built upRegional collaborations are established in various communities, ad-hoc or project-based
Political support for national-level eInfrastructure programmes and regional programmes and operational solutions is being secured (SEEnet, SEGI)
EGI seen as a viable model, however with some features that do not cater for regional sustainability and collaboration
The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
SEE region and EGI: perspectives
EGI.org as a broker for scientific collaborations not seen as a flexible or desirable model. ("EGI.org deciding on allocation of project members to VOs“;
"allocating resources to VOs") More dynamic, free and flexible model is needed.
Specialized Support Centers needing EGI.org blessing similarly restrict the open scientific market "formation will be carried out under assessment by the EGI"”
EGI.org seen by SEEGRID only as purely operational coordination/harmonization body Fazing out of regional operational coordination is not seen as
either efficient or necessary step -> SEEGRID will continue strong regional operations
The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
Conclusions
Path towards sustainability laid down through a set of complementary and coordinated activities
National dimension is crucial: NRN, NGI
Regional dimension as a driver and articulator
EGI collaboration is essential, but in a more flexible, lightweight manner, with minimum impact on free national and regional collaborations
EGI should keep the door open to regional initiatives
