South Florida Airstream Club Unit 30, WBCCI Buys Christmas Gifts for Head Start and Charter Schools

in Belle Glade, FL

For the second year the South Florida Unit has brought wrapped Christmas pre-sents for children living in poverty conditions in Belle Glade, FL. The members bring wrapped gifts for children from Preschool through fifth grade to their No-vember/December rally. This year the rally was in Malabar, FL, November 30-December 4, 2016. The members have a dinner and then each member opens a gift to see what has been brought for the children. Many oooohs and aaaahs were heard as we saw the dolls, trucks, games, and other toys that were un-wrapped. The toys are then taken to Faith Lutheran Church in North Palm Beach, FL, that has been providing a Christmas bag that contains a set of cloth-ing, a book, and a toy. The collection of toys by our Airstream unit is a big help in this effort. The students are asked what they would like for Christmas and those wishes are fulfilled as much as possible. The Christmas bags are given out at the school just before the Christmas vacation. Of course, the children have to promise not to open them until Christmas Eve or Christmas morning! PEPPI Head start and EXCEL Charter School are located in Belle Glade, FL.

This is an area that has employed many of the people who work the winter vege-

table fields and the correctional institution. In the past several years many of

these jobs have been lost due to mechanization in the fields and the closing of

the correctional institution. In addition many of the parents have dropped out of

school at an early age, become involved in drugs, or have become unemployed

for extended periods of time. The area still has one of highest incidences of

AIDS and other related illnesses. Many of the parents who do find work often

work several jobs in order to provide the basic food, clothing and shelter. Both of

the schools strive to provide a continuous high-level educational experience for

children as well as training for parents in how to support their child’s education.

Newbies No Longer By Laurie Jones

In January 2016, my husband Pat and I decided to go to the Super RV Show in Tampa – JUST TO LOOK. Over the past few years, we were on and off about getting an RV when we retired, but neither of us was 100% on board. The first day at the show, we were in and out of all types of RVs. They were either too big, too small, too expensive, too cheap looking and terrible chemical smells. We called it quits for the day. Pat said – let’s go see the Airstreams in the morning – I’ve heard they’re supposed to be nice. Next morning, we were at the show bright and early and went straight to the Airstream display. Within an hour, we were sold and signing a contract for a 2016 30’ International Serenity. I had only camped once and didn’t like it, but I wouldn’t call this camping – as long as there was air conditioning, my own bathroom and I could use my blow dryer. Our unit was to be ready in May, so we had 3 months to learn all we could about Airstreams and RV camping. As soon as we got home, I was on the computer looking up everything about Airstreams, camping and organizing a small space. I lived and breathed this every day. As part of my searching, I stumbled across WBCCI and the South Florida unit. I was so excited to find a local chapter. I called Beth, who was listed as the contact. We spent an hour on the phone and she invited us to dinner. We bonded instantly. We were also lucky enough to learn that the unit was having a rally in March and they invited us to join them. What a fun rally! It was only 15 minutes from home and even though we’ve lived in Fort Lauderdale for 40+ years, we were tourists and did things that we had never done here. The members of the group were so warm and welcoming. And we got answers to our hundreds of questions we brought with us. We ate breakfasts, lunches and dinners with them. By the end of the weekend, we made new friends, we each gained 5 pounds and we felt pretty confident that we could do this. We picked up our Airstream (since named Bella) in May and by the beginning of June we were off on our first trip to Colorado. We had a great trip – 6 weeks on the road and 7500 miles under our belt. Then in September, we got to experience our first Caravan with WBCCI. We met up with a Texas WBCCI group and toured some of Texas and then onto the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta to meet up with approximately 200 additional Airstreams. We were parked right on the field. It was a once in a lifetime experience. From there we planned the rest of trip – Colorado (Great Sand Dunes and Mesa Verde Na-tional Parks), Moab, UT (Arches and Canyonlands National Parks), Sedona, AZ, New Mexico (Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Roswell). This trip was almost 8 weeks long and 9400 miles. We can no longer be considered Newbies. We’ve learned a lot, seen some amazing sites which we would have never seen, had a few minor issues along the way, but can honestly say that our learning curve was shorten by the information we received from the members of the South Florida unit, Air Forums and Facebook’s Airstream Addicts. Thanks to all that have helped us along our journey!

Tom Towsley was honored as a World War II Veteran Soldier in the fall of 2016. He was sponsored for an all expense trip to Washington D.C. He flew in an airplane loaded with other South Florida Veterans, spending the entire day touring Monuments and Memorials. It was quite an emotional adventure for Tom to ex-perience the love and appreciation of all ages of Americans for his ser-vice to our country. Tony and I were lucky enough to listen to Tom being interviewed for a radio broadcast of this event! Our members were lucky to hear first hand about Tom’s once in a lifetime trip!
