Everything you need to know to survive Freshman Academy
Academics
● Students will take four classes each semester. They will take at least one English class, one Math class, Health and PE, Earth Science, World History, and elective classes.
● Freshmen will need six credits at the end of the year to become a sophomore. ● Students will take an EOC test at the completion of Common Core Math I. This EOC test will count as
20% of the student’s overall grade. Students must pass the EOC with a level III or IV.

● Students will take an NC Final Exam at the end of English I, Earth Science, and World History. The NC Final Exam test will count as 20% of the student’s overall grade.
● Progress reports are sent home every 3 weeks. Report cards are sent home every nine weeks. These reports include comments from the teacher, attendance for the grading period, and class average.
● You may e-mail or leave a voicemail for the teacher if you have questions. E-mail addresses and voicemail numbers are located on the school website. Communication between students, parents, and teachers is a vital part of making the Freshman year successful.
● Students will be offered time for remediation and make up sessions daily during POWER Block

Attendance/Tardy Policy
● A parent note should be sent with the student when he/she returns to school. This note should include all of the following: student’s name, date of absence, reason for absence, parent’s signature and parent’s phone number.

● To receive credit in a class, absences in excess of 4 days must be made up. To make up absences in excess of 4 days, students will attend two POWER block classes for every day missed per class.
● Two tardies in a class equals one day absent for that class. Tardies will be handle by block and may include assigned POWER detention.
Medication
● All prescription medication should be brought to Mrs. Kim Peacock or the main office in its original container with a note from the doctor describing how to dispense it.
● Students who are on medication or prescription drugs of any type should notify the office. That notification should be in writing from their parent/guardian and physician. If it is necessary for a student to bring medication of any type to school, it should be left in the office to be administered at the appropriate time. Documentation from a physician will be required in order to dispense prescription medications. Possession of prescription medication on campus is a serious offense and may result in suspension.
Before and After School Traffic
● Students may be dropped off and picked up at the front of the building before and after school-scheduled times. Doors open at 6:45 and students may be dropped off beginning at 6:50. Students may be picked up at 2:00 when school dismisses. Buses will dismiss shortly thereafter so expect some congestion in the carpool line.
● For dismissals or late arrivals during the school day, all students and parents must enter through the main entrance at the front of the building.
● Students will not be allowed to check out after 1:30pm due to traffic and release safety considerations.
Dress Code
● Students are expected to dress in clothing that is appropriate for school. Clothing that disrupts the educational process will not be tolerated. If in doubt, don’t wear it. Students will be warned and asked to comply if they are in violation of the dress code. Further infractions will result in disciplinary action. Please refer to the dress code policy located in the handbook.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
● Devices Causing Noise or Disturbance--Bringing into a school building or using during the regular school day any whistle, bell, digital paging device, beeper, walkie-talkie, cellular telephone, MP3 player, IPod, scanner, laser pointer, or other device used to create noise or disturbance without the written permission from the principal of the school for educational or medical use only. No photos, video or audio may be recorded without staff consent. The parent/legal guardian shall sign the permission form and the school shall have no liability for any lost, damaged, or stolen items.

● Students may not employ the photographic, videographic, audio recording or reproduction capacity of any electronic device for the purposes of photographing, video capture, recording of reproduction of the same of any student or staff person without the express consent of the staff person, or under the supervision of a teacher or administrator.This section applies at all times while on school premise including school buses or at school sponsored events regardless of location.
Discipline
● Students are expected to follow all SJHS rules at all times. Students who are referred to the office for disciplinary action will receive a copy of the referral detailing the infraction and the punishment they received. The student is responsible for sharing that information with the parent(s). Parents will be contacted by the administration in the event of ISS or OSS.
Miscellaneous Information
● Students will be given lockers to use. Students must provide a combination lock for their assigned locker. Combinations will be given to the advisory teacher. Locks will be cut off if access is needed and combination is not provided.

The following is a list of clubs and organizations currently offered at SJHS. New clubs and organizations may be offered when a faculty sponsor seeks approval from the administration.
