There is little scientific truth to the oldsaying “Man can live on bread and wateralone.” But, try living without water. Itcleanses our body; it cleans are clothes; itirrigates our farms. It is basic to our veryexistence.

The source of Southeast Florida’s wateris the Everglades. For years, the “River ofGrass” has been under attack — first fromthe government which erroneously dugcanals to drain it, to overzealous real estatedevelopers building single-family homesubdivisions, to farmers dumping fertiliz-ers into the watershed, and to the commu-nity’s general neglect.

Florida Gov. Charlie Christ, recognizingthe need to purify the waters entering theEverglades, originally proposed and nego-tiated Florida’s largest land purchase forthe acquisition of 181,000 acres of U.S.Sugar Corp’s farmland. The intent is to endsugarcane farming on the land, which

would result in greatly reducing the dump-ing of phosphorous fertilizers into theEverglades. The idea was conceived duringthe boom when money was available forany worthy, and sometimes unworthy, proj-ects. The original cost of $1.34 billion hasnow been reduced to $536 million for thepurchase of 72,000 acres of farm and groveland.

Let’s step back for a moment and under-stand the logic behind the purchase. Waterflows from the north, down through LakeOkeechobee, through the sugarcane farmsinto the Everglades. The fertilizers used bythe farmers to grow the cane wash downwith the flow of water where it contami-nates the Everglades.

Since the plans original conception, thescarcity of dollars in Tallahassee twice hascaused a reduction in its original size andin cost. However, regardless of its down-sizing, the concept is correct and the needfor its implementation is ongoing.

Objectors to the deal, from the verybeginning, claim that it is a sweetheart dealfor Gov. Crist and U.S. Sugar Corp.Sweetheart deal or not, the purchase is vitalto the continued growth of our communityand our ever-increasing demand for water.

Florida Crystals Corp. and the

Miccosukee Tribe are urging the watermanagement board to kill the deal by notextending the Mar. 31 deadline to completethe purchase. They claim that the agency’sown financial advisors and budget man-agers predict gushers of red ink and majorcuts to existing projects — even withoutthe $45 million in annual debt payments tofinance the purchase.

The tribe contends that the cost is so pro-hibitive that if the Water ManagementDistrict proceeds with the purchase, it willbe forced to eliminate or delay otherplanned Everglades’ restoration projects.

Without exception, every environmentalgroup in and outside of Florida endorsesthe purchase. The Everglades Coalition, made up of Florida’s largest environmentalorganizations, dismisses the claims that thepurchase was designed to enrich U.S.Sugar and that the most critical lands are

not in the purchase. The tribe’s contention that the state does-

n’t have the authority to proceed with thesale of bonds to finance the acquisition hasbeen struck down by the courts. Now theonly question remaining is will the spend-ing of $536 million to buy the land possi-bly slow or eliminate other restorationprojects. Inasmuch as we don’t have evi-dence that buying the U.S. Sugar landacquisition will end other projects, the statemust continue with the purchase.

Main Moon Buffet specializesin Chinese and Asian cuisine

BY RICHARD YAGER

Dining at Main Moon Buffet, the attractiveChinese restaurant just off SW 184th Streetin Cutler Bay, is more than an enjoyableexperience.

Hundreds of customers who return, timeand time again, praise the excellence of itsdiversity of choices from among Chinese,American, Japanese and other SoutheasternAsian cultures.

Black Pepper Shrimp is one of the mostpopular items, notes Jimmy Wong who hasmanaged the Main Moon restaurant for theGuo family for 10 years.

“Folks keep asking for it when theyreturn,” he added.

Twin Flavors Shrimp features prawn witha hot and spicy ginger sauce paired withshrimp with a black bean sauce while LakeTung Ting Shrimp combines snow crab meatwith shrimp sautéed with broccoli, mush-room and bamboo shoots in a delicious whitewine sauce.

Artistry in shrimp is just the start of thevaried menu choices at Main Moon wherethe buffet (all you can eat) constantlychanges selections with more than 60 itemsavailable daily from 180 or more featuredeach week. But what really opens the eyes ofOriental buffet-goers are the Main Moon’ssubtle but significant details, such as:

• Sparkling white china buffet servingdishes in three convenient serving bars elim-inates crowding, even during busy restauranthours.

• Selection dishes are regularly filled withhot-from-the-kitchen specialties, includingfish and shrimp delicacies that need to be just

minutes from the stove or wok.• Crab legs from Canada, mussels, oysters

and other seafood gourmet-styled dishes, regular items rarely found in many buffetselsewhere.

What also separates Main Moon fromother buffets is an inviting interior from thelobby entry with a soothing waterfall-styledglass panel to the dark green carpet piling, spotlessly clean tables and chairs, and gleam-ing gold fixture accents.

That creates the distinct feeling of “class”throughout Main Moon, reflecting the prideof its owners, management and friendly wait-ing staff who greet you with a cordial, wel-coming smile, instantly making you feel athome.

The spacious interior accommodatesgroup parties or celebrations in separated pri-vacy with a special menu prepared inadvance. Outside events also are catered anda complete takeout service is available.

The meal will take place on Thursday, Apr. 1,7 p.m., in the church’s Fellowship Hall at 17700Old Cutler Rd. A $6 donation is requested.

The Seder is a ritual meal served on the firstnight of Passover, that commemorates theflight of the Jews from Egypt. The meal

includes unleavened bread, bitter herbs, beefbrisket, and wine, which symbolize the chal-lenges the Jews faced when leaving Egypt.

St. Thomas Lutheran Church hosts the cere-mony and the meal in an effort to understand themovement of the Passover to the Christian cele-bration of The Last Supper, The HolyCommunion. The Seder demonstrates what Jesusand his disciples did that night as 13 Jewish men.

Members of the Charity Circle of theUnited Methodist Women have found away to take an enjoyable hobby, their tal-ents and effort, and put them to good use tohelp the children of Haiti in the aftermathof the January earthquake.

Working in the Social Hall of theKendall United Methodist Church, 7600SW 104 St., for many hours everyThursday, the women bring their sewingmachines and fabric and skillfully craftbright, colorful clothing for little girls andboys who have little or none of their ownto wear in the shattered cities of Haiti.

So far they have made at least 200 dress-es and 500 baby blankets, as well as shortsfor boys. There are now 15 women work-ing on the project, but it started with agroup of five who knew each other throughthe Viking Sewing Machine Gallery insideJoAnn Fabrics at the Greenery Mall inKendall. Palmetto Bay resident HellenVentimiglia, who manages the Gallery andis an avid seamstress herself, got the ballrolling.

“I was making dresses for my grand-daughters, and I thought, I think I knowsome kids in Haiti that could use some likethat,” Ventimiglia said. “It’s tough to seethem on TV in their dirty clothes, or with-out clothes, just in rags. We figured thiswill, at least, cheer them up.”

Since they are acquainted with medicalpersonnel from Jackson MemorialHospital and the University of Miami, theybelieve they have the perfect conduit forthe donated dresses and things.

“We’re sending them over there withsome doctors and nurses who are goingthere because that way we’re sure theclothes will get put on the kids who needthem,” Ventimiglia said. “Most of the babyblankets will go to the hospitals therewhere they have babies being born whose

parents have no clothes for them at all.”In addition to the things they’ve made,

they also have obtained more than 1,000pairs of underwear, using donations fromothers and the help of their church. For thewomen of the group, it’s not work, it’s alabor of love.

“Over the years I’ve worked a lot withHaitian co-workers, and they are incredi-bly beautiful people,” Amalia “Molly”Gonzalez said. “Having been throughHurricane Andrew, when I saw what they

went through in Haiti, which was 10 timesworse, it really broke my heart.

“I admire their people and I wanted tohelp, what little we could. This is some-thing we could do. I have a friend whoseniece is an orthopedic surgeon who wentdown there to work, and the stories shebrought back were heartbreaking.”

Yvonne Emmanuelli echoed that senti-ment and the desire to contribute her timeand effort.

“I’ve been sewing with Viking Gallery

for a number of years — I have theirmachines — and when Hellen told us thatwe were going to help Haiti doing thesedresses, I immediately volunteered, as wellas my friends,” Emmanuelli explained.“This has been the best therapy that we cando, working with our friends and knowingthat we’re doing something good for peo-ple that really need it.”

Bernadine Smith, another veteran seam-stress, also was attracted to the projectbecause of the tremendous need and herability to contribute.

“When you see what’s going on down inHaiti you feel very helpless and you wantto do something, and this is something thatwe can do,” Smith said. “And it’s an ongo-ing thing we can keep doing. It’s some-thing I can give back. I’ve been sewing fora long time, over 60 years. I learned frommy grandmother.”

While they’ve been gathering up enoughgarments to send down to the kids, thewomen made an impressive display oftheir efforts by hanging the dresses every-where in the church’s main chapel, anddraping the baby blankets over the frontpanels before the pews. The effect was sostriking that it prompted a rash of otherdonations from non-sewing members ofthe church.

One woman in the group has inspiredher friends by doing what she can to help, putting edgings on blankets or sewing rib-bons on a dress, even though she is afflict-ed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).Despite being unable to talk and remembercertain things, she shows up everyThursday with a smile on her face, ready tohelp.

And if they tune in one day soon and seesome Haitian kids on TV who are wearingclothes they recognize as being ones theymade?

“It will make us feel it was all worth-while,” Ventimiglia said.

Short Sale: What is it?Do I have that option?BY DANIA S. FERNANDEZ, ESQ.Attorney at Law

Many home-owners are in dis-tress with theirmortgages. Dealingwith a foreclosureand/or negotiatinga loan modificationis a common situa-tion throughoutSouth Florida. Ashort sale may be aviable option for

those who have had enough and wantto simply move on.

Here is basic and usefulinformation regarding

short sales:

1. What is a short sale?A short sale is an alternative to

foreclosure where the lender/bankagrees to accept a sale price on yourproperty that is less than what is oweon the loan. If you want to sell yourhome and you have no equity and owemore than it is worth, it will need to bethrough a short sale process.

2. When should I consider ashort sale?

This depends on your particularsituation. If you wish you could justwalk away from your house, then ashort sale is appropriate. If what youneed is more time, whether to find abetter job or save money, then waitand do not sell your house yet.

Many homeowners unable to paytheir mortgage believe that they needto leave their home immediately. Keepin mind that once you leave yourhome you will either be living withsomeone else or you will have to rent.

Do not forget that to rent you willprobably have to pay first and lastmonths’ rent plus a security deposit.A better plan is often to stay in yourhome and try to work out a loan mod-ification as you simultaneously defendyour foreclosure. Only you can decideif you want to fight for the home youhave worked so hard for.

3. Where do I find buyers for ashort sale?

A common problem with shortsales is finding a buyer. You need aRealtor who is knowledgeable aboutshort sales and can market your home

to quickly find a buyer. Most attorneyswork with a Realtor who is well-versedin the short sale process. Contact yourattorney and get a referral for aRealtor. It will make a huge difference.

4. Do I need an attorney? An attorney will negotiate the

short sale transaction. A short sale isprocessed much like a loan modifica-tion. The attorney will prepare alldocumentation and negotiate a dealwith the lender/bank.

In addition, you need to make cer-tain the lender/bank waives its rightto a deficiency judgment against you.A deficiency judgment is when thelender/bank pursues its right to comeafter you for the difference of whatthey agreed to allow the home to besold for and what you owed to them.

5. What will I have to pay?The Realtor’s commissions are

paid at closing by the lender/bank.An attorney may have an initial pro-cessing fee and may negotiate theirfees with the lender/bank. In everyshort sale, time is a major factor;therefore it is best that the process behandled by an experienced profes-sional. If a short sale is not processedcorrectly it could take longer to get anapproval and eventually you may losethe potential buyer.

There is a timeline for every alter-native and every homeowner shouldbe clear as to what step to take first.Whether it is a loan modification, foreclosure defense, short sale, deedin lieu of foreclosure or bankruptcy, each alternative is going to be specificto your individual case.

Don’t be a homeowner who aban-dons their home prematurely! Thereare many viable alternatives.

My initial consultation is free andmany attorneys do the same. Writedown all the questions you may have, getclear answers and start sleeping at night.

The net is never neutral

BY DR. MARK A. JAMISON AND DR. JANICE HAUGE*

Dumb is better? That is what netneutrality advocates would have usbelieve. Their basic belief is thatbroadband networks should bepipes that indifferently pass infor-mation packets from one location toanother, allowing content providersand customers equal opportunity todo whatever they want. Who couldbe against that? People interested ininnovation and customer welfare.

Remember Al Gore calling theInternet the Information SuperHighway? The metaphor wasn’t andisn’t perfect, but it is instructive.Suppose we applied net neutrality toour transportation system – therewould be no high occupancy vehiclelanes during rush hour, no car onlylanes on interstates, and no toll roadas an alternative to I-95 in SouthFlorida. Transportation would bemore costly and provide less value.

Forcing net neutrality wouldhave similar results. Time sensitiveinformation, such as stock markettransactions, would wait in linebehind football game highlights.Financial dealings that would benefitfrom extra security would be givenno better treatment than a Twitterfrom Taylor Swift’s E! interview.

If you are thinking that itsounds like net neutrality restrictsinnovation and hurts customers, you’re right. Our research hasshown that net neutrality limitsinnovation, contrary to the claims ofthe net neutrality proponents. Howcan this be? Imagine a one dimen-sional network – one that does noth-

ing but carry information frompoint to point, which is how the oldInternet has worked. What kinds ofcontent providers flourish in thatcontext? Those big enough to dis-tribute their software across the netand those whose software takesadvantage of the great bandwidththat they don’t have to pay for.

Now suppose that the networkcan offer enhancements thatimprove customers’ experiences.Content providers whose sites wouldnot benefit from such enhance-ments could ignore the offering. But there will be some contentproviders who could improve theirservices by buying the enhance-ments, such as priority packet deliv-ery. These sites become better with-out net neutrality and offer cus-tomers more service. In otherwords, there is more innovation andgreater customer welfare withoutnet neutrality than with it.

Today’s successful Internet sitesface great competition if we movebeyond net neutrality principles. That probably explains why they arenet neutrality’s strongest advocates. But moving beyond a dumb networkis better for customers, sites that findnew opportunities and networks.

It should be no surprise thatdumb isn’t better. In an innovationdriven economy, restrictions don’tmake us better. They hold us back.

The Arts and Philosophy Department atMiami Dade College’s (MDC) WolfsonCampus will present an oddball ensemble— tenor saxophone, marimba (and woodblock), electric guitar, and piano — onSunday, Mar. 28.

The concert, titled “Obsession!,” willinclude a performance of LouisAndriessen’s mind-bending piece Hout(Wood), among other compositions, start-ing at 3 p.m. at the First United MethodistChurch of Miami, 400 Biscayne Blvd.

Written in 1991, this entertaining work isa fast canon with entrances at the 16thnote, each musician chasing the leader inriffs that sound like Bach gone mad. Dutchcomposer Andriessen is the Netherland’smost important living composer. His musicoften is didactic, and a common theme isperseverance. Hout is one of the most chal-lenging works for the guitar, marimba, andsaxophone.

“Obsession!” moves from meditative tocaffeinated, and features fresh sounds in

modern modes. Other pieces include SteveReich’s Clapping Music; music of birds:Olivier Messiaen’s Le Merle Noir, andSomei Satoh’s Birds in Warped Time II, andArvo Pärt’s hypnotic Spiegel im Spiegel. The concert will begin with Pastorale, music composed by Louis Andriessen’sfather, Hendrik Andriessen. All of thismusic was written between 1941 and 1991.

Featured musicians include flutistEbonee Thomas, violinist MeganMcClendan, saxophonist Matt Vashlishan, guitarist Aaron Lebos, percussionist SergioCarreno, and pianist Alan Ngim. Theseversatile musicians also can be heard per-forming with the New World Symphony,Miami Children’s Chorus and The DelrayQuartet, as well as at Churchill’s Pub, theArsht Center and internationally.

Members of the ensemble also teach atMDC, New World School of the Arts andthe University of Miami.

This performance is free to the public. For information, contact Dr. Alan Ngim,

associate professor, at 305-237-3068, or byemail at <[email protected]>.

The Audi TT made its debut as a conceptcar in 1995 and consumer reaction was sostrong that Audi brought to market as ahatchback coupe for the 2000 model year. Ithas been a barnstorming success from thestart.

For 2010, you can get the TT in bothCoupe and Roadster models.

Named after the Tourist Trophy auto raceon the Isle of Man, the Audi TT is not quitea sports car and not quite a sport coupe orroadster; it’s more of a two-seat GT. TheCoupe does have two rear seats, but they’renot much good for carrying people unlessthey’re small children.

The TT was redesigned for the 2008model year and represents the second gen-eration of the sporty little vehicle. Althoughslightly larger, this second generation does-n’t stray far from the classic lines of itspredecessor. The general look is the same, although character lines are crisper and the

nose has Audi’s now signature single-framegrille.

Although longer and wider than the firstTT, this latest version is lighter by almost200 pounds in the case of the roadster, thanks to increased use of aluminum in thebody structure. It also has a more powerfulfour-cylinder engine.

Two trim levels — a 2.0T (200 hp tur-bocharged four-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive) and a 3.2 Quattro (250 hp V-6with all-wheel drive) — are offered in achoice of hatchback coupe and roadsterbody styles. Transmission choices include asix-speed manual and a six-speed S-tronictwin-clutch sequential transmission thatoffers the ease of an automatic combinedwith the quick response of a manual.

On the road, the 2.0T is more agilethrough the curves because it has lessweight on the front tires, while the 3.2Quattro has more power on straightawayand a more aggressive engine and exhaustsound.

The TT has the low-slung look and feelof a sports car, but the personality is closerto a luxury sport coupe. From the side, there’s a look of poise and speed, with largefender arches housing stylish wheeloptions. The Coupe has a long, arching

roofline, while short overhangs in the frontand rear give it well-balanced look. The TTRoadster includes integrated roll bars withaluminum inlays, which provide form andfunction. Integrated taillights follow theform of the TT along a subtle bodyline andincorporate a third LED taillight.

On the inside, there’s a comfortable,driver-oriented cockpit with large, easy-to-read gauges, and a magnesium tri-spoke,flat-bottom steering wheel, wrapped in

fine-grain leather. Low-fitted front seatshave large, supportive bolsters.

Pricing on the 2010 Audi TT starts at$37,800 for the Coupe and $40,800 for theRoadster.

I had to remind Mom to turn off the stove again.

How can I be sure that Momis eating regularly?

Even at night I am worried about Mom and Dad.

Leaving Mom alone all day is so hard for me to do.

Peace of mind is a phone call away.
