Commodore’s Comments Welcome fellow South Milwaukee Yacht Club members to a New Year! I am writ-ing my 49th Commodore Comments. I normally keep the comments upbeat and on a positive note. However, this one may not be perceived this way. Recently, I was made aware of a disgusting and disturbing letter one of our mem-bers received from an apparent anonymous member. The details of the letter are not important and I will not go into them. What I want to discuss is the lesson learned from the letter. We are a tight knit community. WE have values that are important to our community. Our Handbook is specific about the conduct of a member:
“Conduct
A Member is expected to demonstrate a high level of personal character and con-duct in all of their activities, whether at the Club, as a guest of another Club, or as a
general citizen of their community.” It reminds me of the Golden Rule:
“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all
that is taught in the law and the prophets.” The bottom line of this rant, if a member does not value and abide by a pretty sim-ple set of personal character rules. Potentially, that member should think about moving on. So, here is the lesson learned from this experience. The next time an action or com-ment is made or you are making an action or comment, think about the repercus-sions it may have on your fellow members. Enough of that! I want to thank Doug Wandler for his work on replacing the bar area furnace. Doug is a new member and jumped in when we needed a helping hand. As you know we will be installing our Board and Officers January 21st. I want to thank Mary Jo Haag and Cheryl Rybka for putting the gala together again. If you haven’t been to our Installation Dinner, it is a fabulous time with a great dinner and entertainment. Mary Jo and I are attending several local Yacht Club’s events over the next month. We look forward to enjoying the evenings. I would also like to thank Tom and Meg Ciurlik for stepping up over the last couple of weeks and sponsoring our Packer Party good eats. Throughout the season many members pick a game and share some of their culinary expertise. Thanks to all of you and hopefully we will get a few more games in this season! Go Pack Go! Finally, I want to thank our Board and Officers for 2016 and 2017. I appreciate their feedback and their dedication to our Club. I look forward to working with them in 2017. I also look forward to being your Commodore for another year. We do have a great Club, great Members, and a passion very few people will ever get to enjoy.
See you at the Club, Jon Haag SMYC Commodore (c) 414-617-3438 (e) [email protected]

Attention all members new and old.
The 2017 boating season will soon be upon us and the club events are
already being scheduled on the calendar.
Putting together a club event is a great way to get some hours in.
If there are any members that are interested in running an event, or have
an idea for a new event, please let a board or committee member know.
Please remember that large club events do not need to be handled all by
yourself.
The club has been doing this for a long time, and there is no lack of
knowledge or experience among the members when it comes to running
an event.
A committee can be assembled for large events, to help with making it
run smoothly without a lot of stress.
