EDU BLE PRICE WWW.SOUTHPLAINSCOLLEGE.EDU QUALITY EDUCATION AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE THE PROFESSION Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent or disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. The nature of the direction and supervision required varies by state and job setting. LVNs care for patients by providing basic bedside care. LVNs take and record vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respirations. They also prepare and give injections, administer prescribed medications, change and apply dressings and monitor catheters. To help keep patients comfortable, they assist with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene, moving patients in bed, standing and walking. Experienced LVNs may supervise nursing assistants and aides. In some states they may be referred to as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Licensed Vocational Nurses monitor and report adverse reactions to medication and treatments. LVNs gather information from patients, including their health history and how they are currently feeling. They may use this information to complete insurance forms, pre-authorizations, and referrals, and they share information with registered nurses and doctors to help determine the best course of care for a patient. Some LVNs assist registered nurses, by caring for seriously ill patients in intensive care. LVNs should have a caring, sympathetic nature. They should be emotionally stable because working with the sick and injured can be stressful. LVNs must be observant and have good decision-making and communication skills. As part of a health-care team, they must be able to follow orders and work under close supervision. JOB PROSPECTS Employment is projected to grow faster than average. Overall job prospects are expected to be very good, but job outlook varies by industry. The best job opportunities will occur in nursing facilities and home health care services, while applicants in hospitals may face competition. Replacement needs will be a major source of job openings, as many workers leave the occupation permanently. Rapid employment growth is projected in most health care industries. In some employment settings, such as nursing homes, LVNs can advance to become charge nurses who oversee the work of other LVNs and nursing aids. Some also choose to become registered nurses through numerous LVN-to-RN programs. THE PROGRAM South Plains College Vocational Nursing programs are designed to prepare individuals to become Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) through classroom study and supervised clinical practice (patient care). Classroom study covers basic nursing concepts, subjects related to patient care, including anatomy & physiology, medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatric nursing, the administration of drugs, nutrition and geriatrics. Clinical practice is in a hospital, nursing home or other health care facilities. The NCLEX-PN licensing exam is required in order to obtain licensure to practice as an LVN. The VN program is approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Board of Nursing. Satisfactory completion of the 12-month curriculum with a minimum grade of “C” in all course work entitles the student to receive a Certificate of Proficiency. This program is offered at three South Plains College campuses: Levelland, Reese and Plainview. VOCATIONAL NURSING SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE
