Graduati ng high school is a milestone that many of America’s enti tled youth
go through. Though a lot of fun interacti ons and immature tom-foolery has happened over the years, was it worth having to go through years of required read-ing, pacer tests, and state exami-nati ons?
The Salem-Keizer Public School District’s vision statement is that “All students graduate and are prepared for a successful life.” That’s a joke. Or is it? Were we really prepared for success? At South, the graduati on rate for the class of 2015 was eighty-four percent; a whole twelve percent higher than the Oregon average. But this stati sti c doesn’t defi ne our success.
Starti ng from the beginning, el-ementary was honestly kind of a blur. What did we do? A handful of years devoted to some earlier development and basic skill build-ing should be something everyone should go through yet nothing super signifi cant happened. But let’s face the fact that we can only remember the cheesy mozarella sti cks and crushing our fi ngers with those yellow scooters in PE. Good ti mes...
Moving on, the overall consen-sus on middle school is that it’s full of regretf ul decisions. Do you remember wearing all black and expressing your poorly thought-out existenti alist outlook on life? Did you shop at Hot Topic? Were you laughing at really bad bath-room humor? Well then, I’m—hold on, that might not have been you? Then you’re one of the lucky ones. But we all had something
we look back on to cringe at. High school is where things
got serious, parti cularly at South where many of us had to deal with the soul crushing and PTSD-induc-ing IB program. Admitt edly, IB did prepare me for doing college-level writi ng and work [the night be-fore]. It’s
As if we weren’t already super swamped, many of us were part of athleti c programs, musical en-sembles, clubs, organizati ons, and cults (I’m looking at you, DECA kids and Thespians). Even if you weren’t in one, we’ve all met at least one person we can identi fy with.
While school is primarily about educati ng the youth, it is also where we get introduced to our best friends, boyfriends/girl-friends, or maybe just Zari.
Using the district’s excellent music programs as proof of our growth, we’ve started off as dain-ty kids learning to play our scales, but by the end, we’re performing Rachmaninoff and Ravel.
So has this decade long edu-cati onal journey been worth it? HONEST-TO-GOD NO! But growing up with you guys has been a lot of fun. As Plankton from Spongebob once said, “Goodbye, everyone. I’ll remember you all in therapy.”

“I saw it at the midnight show-ing. The only thing that both-ered me was that in the movie, he takes the Elder Wand and snaps it in half and just throws it away,” Kendall Clawson ‘16 said.
“The jokes were funny and simple. And, just the acti ons and what they did was funny. Jon Heder, the legend came to South Salem High School and it just proves that we’re bett er than everyone else,” Vincent Villarreal 16’ said.

“High School Musical was like the best movie. I always thought Sharpay was bett er than Gabriella. It was really obvious that Sharpay deserved the main role in the school mu-sical over Gabriella. Sharpay worked so hard,” Maia Hogan ‘16 said.

they were older, but then they just killed one of them off and I was like no,” Shakeina Boyd ‘16 said.
Star Wars:The Force Awakens
“The movie was breathtak-ing. There was so many dif-ferent events happening at once so I was kept on the edge of my seat the enti re ti me. The plot twists also really helped with the sus-pense factor. Overall, one of the best movies I’ve ever seen,” Tricia Lin ‘16 said.

Bryan Kelly ‘16 as seen from two diff erent stages of his life. Kelly is seen as an anomaly in comparison to most seniors for retaining his youth-ful, child-like apperance. Though inside, he is just as broken by the educational machine as the rest of us.

ThingsYouNEVERNeeded in High School
by SARAH AUDLEY & CASSIE RAMBEAU
What oft en comes along with graduati ng high school is a chance to looks back at
one’s experience and achievements throughout their enti re school career. One of these achievements South prides itself on off ering, is the IB, or Internati onal Baccalaureate program. This program is known for it’s rigorous and challenging criteria-- extended essays, oral presentati ons, summer reading, and more. However, these classes aren’t for everyone, and that’s ok. Making it through high school is an achievement in itself, regardless of the level of diffi culty classes were.
Honor roll is another thing at South that becomes a topic of praise. A GPA is a number, not something that determines worthiness or seals fate. Just because one might have never made honor roll does not mean they are any less smart than those kids who had a perfect 4.0 throughout their enti re four years.
And to the students who think att ending community college is something to be ashamed of, there is
something wrong with that mindset itself. The sti gmas att ached to com-munity college are that it’s a last re-sort, or a place where people with not so great credenti als go, but in reality, community college is a great way to save money-- especially with the new Oregon Promise Grant-- and because of this, it allows one to try out diff er-ent classes rather than att ending a university where switching majors po-tenti ally means losing out on a lot of money, or having to transfer schools because the one you att end doesn’t off er what you would like to switch to. This happens a lot more than one might think.
For some, a huge achievement might be that fact they were able to get out of bed in the morning, for oth-ers that might be graduati ng with an IB diploma. Regardless of academic achievement, graduati ng seniors have done it, they have completed high school, endured four years of early mornings, late nights, tests, home-work, notes, essays. They all have that to be proud of.
The class of 2016 has had it rough the past three years leading up
to senior year. With the new SBAC testi ng, IB, and trying to pass all their classes; it has been an ongoing cycle since freshman year. Teachers advise students not to pro-crasti nate and to to study. A common phrase that went around senior year was “you are not a number,” by Miss. Knecht to moti vate students aft er a test. Mrs. Woods’ relaxing “om chanti ng” be-fore a vocab test is another example. But once seniors conti nue on their journey to college and into adult life, what will their last words of wisdom be?
“Leave as many doors to your future open as you can, for as long as you can. They will begin closing on their own soon enough,” Mrs. Woods said.
“When I was a freshman in college I read the famous quote by the poet Frank O’Hara ‘Grace – to be born and live as variously as pos-sible.’ These words resonat-ed with me then and sti ll do now.” Miss. Knecht said. “As it turned out I have had three very diff erent, rewarding, careers and perhaps there is another yet to be discov-ered. I share this because I remember being your age and having people frequent-ly ask me ‘What do you want
to do with your life?’ I really had no idea at the ti me and could not have foreseen the path that I ended up follow-ing. So if you are as yet un-sure what you want to do with your life – it’s ok! My best advice is to follow your heart, live a life of integrity and enjoy the journey. You may be surprised where it leads you.”
Senior year has come to an end, and all gradu-ates have accomplished the struggles of high school. Al-though the procrasti nati on will probably not end many won’t forget the wise words of their South Salem High School teachers.
