MASS READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9 a
Second Reading: James 2:14-18
Gospel Reading: Mark 8:27-35
SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase "Sunday best" has lost much of its meaning in our
society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for
church on Sunday; others think it's a healthy sign that we're
as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are
elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic
we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either
case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it
for some sort of favored position before God. True, James
criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed
while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he
criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on
criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James
might turn our attention to the reign of God described by
Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe
to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God,
healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith,
not mindful of the man's origins or clothing or status or ability
to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark's Gospel all call us
to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be
done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright (c)

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS This is the process of initiating adults and older children into the
Catholic Christian Community. Our program of RCIA is more than
just a classroom. It is a journey into the faith, into a personal
relationship with God. RCIA is not just for Non-Catholics. Our
program is for unbaptized, already baptized Christians, and
already baptized Catholics seeking Confirmation. We invite all of
the faithful, as RCIA is for the entire parish community. It is a
wonderful way to grow the faith of the community as well as a
continuation of conversion. Interested? Please call Diane Smith
at 240-347-6174. First Class begins on Monday, September 17th
at 6 PM, Saint James Church in Boonsboro. Classes will rotate
among the three parishes.

soon be moving into a 12-acre property in Clear Spring and
are in the process of discerning a path to founding a Catholic
Worker Community. This will be a place to work and pray and

C & O CANAL DAYS BAKE SALE On behalf of the Church, who benefited from the $701.00 final total
for the Cake Walk at the C & O Canal Days this year, I personally want
to thank all those who contributed baked goods. The profits this year
came from selling the cakes and cupcakes to a very small crowd on
Saturday. The cake walks were bringing in about $5.00 every half hour
until we started selling the cakes. The cakes went for up to $30.00 and
the smallest were sold for $7.00. We had 90 cakes the first day. On
Sunday, we started with 40 and we received 15 more. We had those
who brought 6 cakes who signed up for none. We had bakers from
St. Joseph's Church who also added to our numbers as well as our
Cake Lady from Calvary Temple. Each year, since the Cake Walk
began, our Parish at St. Augustine, has benefited by the generosity
and time that Jenny and Gary DePalma take to make over 20 cakes.
Thanks is all I have, but God's blessings will certainly be a reward that
has no words needed. My helpers and our bakers make planning for
next year something to which I look forward. - Patty Patterson

Iglesia Católica San José Hagerstown, Maryland Boletín Informativo de la Comunidad Hispana
Desde el escritorio del Padre Juan Antonio
Estimados Parroquianos,
Exortacion Apostolica Amoris Laetitia

A modo
Hermano,
caminemos juntos y alegres por él. Es el camino que Cristo nos ha
enseñado a sus discípulos.
