Visit StamfordStamford’s stone heritage has drawn accolades back

through time – and tourists from far and wide.

Described as ‘the finest stone town in England’ by Sir Walter Scott

4 www.southwestlincs.com

Its unique blend of history, niche shopping, stunning architecture and an over-riding sense of community even won the supreme compliment from the

Sunday Times Newspaper as ‘Britain’s Top Place to Live’.

With over 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone, the UK’s first conservation town is the perfect setting for Stamford’s Georgian Festival, first held with huge success in 2013 and scheduled to take place again from September 25-27 2015.

Stamford is unusual in having whole streets entirely made up of Georgian houses, yet vibrant with modern life. It’s an architectural legacy which has drawn innumerable film companies for classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Middlemarch.

Now, in more modern times, it’s the stage for a fabulous Georgian festival which recreates the bustle and feel of the Georgian period over a weekend-long programme of events, organised by South Kesteven District Council.

A bustling Friday street market epitomises all that’s best about market

towns, stretching along Broad Street into Ironmonger Street. Stamford’s regular farmers’ market offers traceable produce and a sales outlet for local food producers.

On a daily basis Stamford’s eating houses, pubs and food speciality shops make its winding streets a voyage of gastronomic discovery. Its historic core is a perfect backdrop for businesses and niche retailers alike. It boasts world-class watchmakers, award winning food producers, an independent brewery and a thriving cafe culture.

Stamford Arts Centre, dating from 1768, is one of the oldest provincial theatres in England. It’s a thriving focal point for arts and cinema and houses the Tourist Information Centre.

Local people and visitors alike benefit from a wealth of attractions on the town’s doorstep. Rutland Water to the west is one of Europe’s largest man-made reservoirs and a haven for fishing, cycling, sailing and wildlife. Historic houses include Grimsthorpe Castle and Burghley House in rolling countryside with picturesque villages.

Here are just a few things that make it a great place: • Enjoy four days of sport at the

autumn Burghley Horse Trials• Experience the delights of

September’s Georgian Festival• Delight in a walk along the River

Welland or just relax on the town’s historic water meadows

• Enjoy sailing, climbing or cycling at nearby Rutland Water

• Shop amongst 600+ retailers at the Burghley Horse Trials - with corporate hospitality available

• Indulge yourself amidst Stamford’s uniquely niche shops, from antiques to jewellery and upmarket fashions

• Enjoy the Stamford Shakespeare Company at Tolethorpe, one of the finest open air theatres with its very popular summer season

Visit GranthamThe Angel and Royal Hotel, originally a court of King John, still takes

pride of place in the High Street but over the years the town has expanded and developed and is now home to many shops, indoor

shopping centres and a bustling Saturday street market.

Mentioned as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book, Grantham has developed hugely since the days when it was known as a

stopping place for kings and nobleman.

8 www.southwestlincs.com

There’s also a whole host of dining experiences from Harry’s Place (just outside the town and voted 8th in the Sunday

Times’ Top 100 Restaurants) to Bombay Brasserie, a winner in the East Midlands Food Awards best Indian category - as well as a wide range of other top quality restaurants to suit all tastes.

With a population of over 40,000, the town has managed to retain its character but also move with the times.

At the heart of Grantham is the parish church of St Wulfram’s with its soaring 282ft spire – one of the most important town churches in England – and the Guildhall houses a lively arts centre and tourist information centre.

It is also known as a town of firsts; Britain’s first woman Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, was born in the town and Edith Smith, the country’s first policewoman, served here.

Grantham has a wonderful choice of places to visit as well as a selection of splendid parks and open spaces for people to spend their leisure time.

On its doorstep are outstanding local attractions including Belton House, Belvoir Castle, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, Grimsthorpe Castle and Burghley House near Stamford, home of the famous horse trials.

On top of that the area boasts one of the best leisure facilities in the East Midlands with the Meres Leisure Centre and has a wealth of other attractions from championship standard 18 hole golf courses to smaller rural courses, impressive castles, pretty villages and homes, and unrivalled countryside for walking, riding and cycling.

There’s also the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of festivals and events covering everything from theatre through to music and art.

All that’s left is to find a great place to stay to savour all that the area has to offer.

And we have plenty of those too. From hotels to coaching inns, B&B’s, guest houses and farmhouses to self catering accommodation, we have something to suit every taste and every budget for both leisure and business visitors alike.

Showing great innovation, South Kesteven District Council launched the Gravity Fields Festival in 2012 to celebrate the life and discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton who was born locally at Woolsthorpe Manor. Its second running in 2014 was hailed an outstanding success putting Grantham on both national and international maps.

Visit BourneBourne today is known worldwide for its motor racing

connections but its roots go back to the Roman invasion.

The red brick town at the foot of the limestone hills of Kesteven owes its origin to the Roman road upon which it was built –

and its name to its fine quality water.Bourne (or Bourn, as it was originally

known) comes from the Anglo Saxon meaning water or stream.

It is the place where English Racing Automobiles (ERA) and British Racing Motors (BRM) racing cars were built, and Pilbeam Racing and Hall and Hall are today carrying on a proud tradition.

Its other claim to fame is as the

birthplace of both Hereward the Wake, leader of the local resistance to the Norman Conquest of England, and Charles Worth, the man widely considered as the father of haute couture, an English fashion designer of the 19th century, whose works were produced in Paris.

The Red Hall, a fine Elizabethan mansion, stands near the centre of the town, and the Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul, founded in 1138, is one of the oldest buildings in Bourne.

Visit The DeepingsNestling beside the River Welland on the southern borders of

South Kesteven, sits the town of Market Deeping and the villages of Deeping St James, West Deeping and Langtoft.

Mammoth elephants and woolly rhinoceros once roamed the low-lying land which is collectively known

as The Deepings – a Saxon name meaning deep places.

Now the area is home to fine 17th century stone houses but with all the trappings of modern day life. Market Deeping, with a population of about 14,000, has definitely left behind its pre-historic roots offering a unique combination of the traditional and the forward thinking.

Considered to be in one of best districts to live, according to a Halifax Quality of Life survey, the area has developed significantly over the years, attracting major and new businesses while still acting as an important service centre.

Attractions include the triangular market place featuring fine stone buildings and former coaching inns, and the 13th Century church of St. Guthlac, with two sundials on the tower.

There is also a great selection of shops and cafes on offer, or simply enjoy a stroll along the River Welland.
