Welcome

Welcome to our 2018 Holiday Tour brochure, and we must initially begin by thanking you for making our tour programme in 2017 such a success.

We have once again featured a wide range of quality, value for money holidays and short breaks both within the UK and Europe. We will again bring you some of our best established destinations with amended and updated itineraries, alongside a brand new selection of venues for those of you looking for something different.

Using our fleet of mini-buses we offer you a virtually door to door pick up service as we will pick you up from near as practically possible from your front door and take you to meet the tour coach. Our aim is to get you on the tour coach and away on your tour as soon as possible.

All of the excursions described in the holiday that you choose are planned to enhance the tour and add enjoyment. These are all included within the tour price that you pay – we don’t add any extras on and expect you to pay more. However, if you prefer to spend some time in the host resort or doing your own thing, then that is fine by us. All we would ask is that you inform your driver.

We would like to remind you that single rooms are limited so early booking is advised if you require this type of room. South West Coaches are allocated a limited number of single rooms at the supplement shown on the relevant tour page. Once these have all been sold we can request additional single rooms but these are often at a increased supplement. In addition to this the seats on the coach are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis so if you have a preference for a particular seat, then again, you need to book as early as possible.

We are here to help you choose your perfect holiday and look forward to welcoming you on board soon. Have a great holiday.

The pretty fishing town of Looe is a truly delightful and picturesque place, separated into two towns of East and West Looe by the River Looe flowing out to sea. The small harbour is still a busy fishing port, watch the ships unload their catches, witness the auctions and then after the bustle of the quayside retreat to the narrow streets. Here you will find an abundance of art and craft shops, boutiques bars and specialist shops. Looe really does have something for everyone.

FRIDAY We make our mid-morning departure west, initially travelling to Polperro - a largely un-spoilt fishing village on Cornwall’s South East coast. Its beautiful cottages cling to steep hillsides around a small harbour with spectacular views of land and sea making it an artist’s paradise. We then continue to nearby Looe where we check in at the Portbyhan Hotel and you can then spend some time relaxing over a complimentary tea or coffee admiring the spectacular views or go for a stroll around the quayside before dinner.

SATURDAY We initially visit the lovely town of Fowey with its narrow streets and gorgeous harbour views before continuing to Charlestown with its pristine unspoilt original Grade II Listed Harbour and its famous fleet of Square Riggers ships. We visit the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre. Brought together over the last 45 to 50 years, it forms the basis of one of the most unusual and interesting collections open to the public. There are countless items from a bygone age as well as artefacts from over 150 shipwrecks. The many and varied exhibitions reflect village life in Charlestown, its

history, shipwrecks and the once thriving China Clay industry. The exhibition shows a tremendous range of maritime history dating back to 1715. Then, we make the short trip to the St Austell Brewery Visitor Centre, which offers a new and interactive Brewing Experience. The refurbished, accessible visitor centre reveals the secrets that are behind St Austell’s award winning ales and 160 year old brewing process. The interactive tour includes digital and physical display, a stroll down Walters Walk will show us how things used to be done at the brewery, a reconstructed Coopers Yard and a visit to the Small Batch Brewery with tutored beer sampling and a pint of St Austell beer to enjoy at the on- site Hicks Bar, or in a bottle to take home.

SUNDAY Today we visit Lanhydrock House, an impressive late Victorian home and gardens. Following a fire in 1881 the owner Thomas Charles filed Lanhydrock with the latest technology, including state of the art ovens and warming cupboards in the kitchen and dining areas, central heating systems and fire hydrants. We can see the fascinating contrast between the upstairs and downstairs worlds by exploring the kitchens and servants quarters as well as the grand family spaces. After spending a relaxing time here we re-join the coach for the short drive to join the Bodmin and Wenford Railway at Bodmin General Station where we take a return journey to Boscarne Junction.

MONDAY We load the coach for our homeward journey, however before we depart enjoy the morning exploring our host resort of Looe. We then start the trip home but enjoy one final attraction in Buckland Abbey Garden and Estate – once owned by Cistercian monks nearly 800 years ago, today is under the care of the National Trust. The Abbey is part museum, part house and is crammed with a variety of treasures. As you wander through the Abbey you’ll

discover a wealth of fascinating tales, amazing architecture and over eight centuries of history. We then re-join the coach and head for home.

YOUR HOTEL We stay at the 3 star and recently refurbished Portbyhan Hotel which is situated in an unrivalled position right in the heart of Looe, allowing guests to relish the panoramic views of the vibrant harbour whilst only a short stroll into Looe town. In 2015 the Portbyhan Hotel won the Best Individual Hotel award at the National Coach Tourism Awards. All bedrooms offer modern facilities built with your comfort in mind TV, telephone, hairdryer tea & coffee. Lift to all floors including the Roof Terrace.

Blessed with extensive scenic coastlines, stunning natural landscapes and unspoilt beaches, the Isle of Man has something to appeal to everyone - only a short ferry crossing from the British mainland but with a character that sets it apart. The island is a unique self-governing Kingdom, a crown dependency which belongs to neither the UK nor the European Union. It has its own parliament, laws, traditions culture, cuisine and postage stamps.

WEDNESDAY We depart Somerset and via the motorways travel north, to the Best Western Plus Samlesbury Hotel near to Preston for an overnight stay.

THURSDAY We continue our journey to the Port of Heysham ahead of the early afternoon crossing to the Isle of Man. Once on the island we make the short journey to the Chesterhouse Hotel on the Douglas seafront – our base for 4 nights.

FRIDAY We travel to Peel where we visit the House of Manannan. The legendary sea god Manannan will guide you through the island’s rich Celtic, Viking and maritime past – journey through life-size reconstructions and film shows with atmospheric sounds and smells. See the replica Viking ship Odin’s Raven and discover a time when the island was at the centre of a powerful sea kingdom. Then, we return to Douglas for a chance to explore our host resort and the Island’s capital - a seafront setting and many shops, bars, restaurants and attractions. We continue to the Manx Museum where we discover the island’s fascinating 10,000 year old history and explore the art gallery’s various exhibitions devoted to all things Manx.

SATURDAY We make our way to Laxey, for an included visit of Lady Isabella – the world’s largest working waterwheel and perhaps the best known image of the island. We then join the Snaefell Mountain Railway, where electric powered trains take passengers over 2,000 feet up to the summit of Snaefell, the islands highest point. Then it is onto Ramsey for our lunch stop, before we make our way to the Jurby Transport Museum. Explore the amazing stories behind a collection of over 250 unique vehicles from around the world, including classic cars and motor vehicles and rarely seen private motorcycles. The Museum was founded and funded by father and son team Denis and Darren Cunningham to act as the public home for their collection of over 130 vehicles. The Museum also hosts over 150 other vehicles on loan from other enthusiasts and collectors. The Isle of Man was chosen as the location for the Museum due to the unique place the Island occupies in motoring and motorsports history having hosted the famous TT races on the public roads annually since 1907.

SUNDAY We join the Isle of Man steam railway in Douglas and head to Port Erin, a peaceful town with pretty gardens and a sandy beach that was first favoured by Victorian holidaymakers. We then journey back in time to the fascinating living museum of Cregneash Folk Village, where residents continue to use horsepower and speak the old local dialect. Then, it’s onto the ancient capital of Castletown and the wonderfully preserved Castle Rushen. Nearby are the wonderful views around Calf Sound and the village of Port Erin nestling in its scenic bay.

MONDAY An early departure from the hotel as we make the short transfer back to the ferry terminal ahead of our ferry crossing from Douglas back across to Heysham, before we continue our journey home.

YOUR HOTELS We spend the first night of our tour at the 4 star Best Western Plus Samlesbury Hotel, near to Preston. This modern 4 star hotel has 80 en-suite bedrooms all equipped with a flat screen television, tea/coffee making facilities, and complimentary toiletries. We spend the remainder of the holiday at the 3 star Chesterhouse Hotel, located on the seafront in Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man. All en-suite bedrooms offer a full range of modern facilities including tea / coffee making facilities, television, radio and hairdryer. The hotel has a lift. The hotel is close to the town centre which offers extensive shopping, and a variety of bars and restaurants. The Shiraz restaurant has panoramic views of the bay and the comfortable Amber Lounge offers a relaxing area at the end of a day’s touring.

The Pennines run for approximately 200 miles from the Peak District to the south to the Scottish Borders in the north and are sometimes known as England’s backbone. The region is widely considered to be one of the most scenic areas of the United Kingdom. Nestled into the scenic hills are historic mill towns and pretty villages and the hills are criss-crossed by canals and railways, once our industrial lifelines but now providing wonderfully nostalgic visits.

THURSDAY Via the motorways we head north, making the first stop of the tour at the World of Wedgwood in Stoke on Trent. Here we will see the skilled craftsmen at work utilising unique artisan skills and techniques honed over 250 years at the home of Wedgwood. We enjoy a tour which offers an in depth view of all aspects of quality ceramic production including casting, figure making, pattern decorating and hand painting, ornamentation and gilding. We then continue to The Old Golf House Hotel to the west of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. FRIDAY We cross from White Rose into Red Rose country for a visit to the Pendle Heritage Centre. Set in the midst of the rolling Lancashire Hills the centre tells the fascinating story of the Pendle Witch Trials. We then continue through moorland scenery to the town of Skipton - this wonderful historic market town is situated in the heart of the beautiful Pennines with its superbly preserved 900 year old medieval Castle. From here you join an afternoon boat cruise travelling on board a beautiful, traditional, canal narrow boat. During the hour long trip the skipper unravels the captivating tale of the canal while passing through the varied scenery, mill buildings and the many bridges.

SATURDAY We travel through some Yorkshire countryside for a ride on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Trains are often steam hauled and pass through Oakworth, the little station made famous by the 1970’s film ‘The Railway Children’. We take a return trip to Oxenhope, before re-joining the coach and travelling to Haworth, home of the prolific Brontë family of writers. We visit their home, The Parsonage before we meet up with a guide who will show us around the village, revealing what it was like in the Brontës' day, and disclosing some of its many secrets.

SUNDAY We depart the hotel and travel first to Esholt - the village formerly used as the setting for the popular television soap ‘Emmerdale’. After a short visit we travel to the historic spa town of Harrogate, with its magnificent Victorian buildings, colourful banks of flowers, broad tree lined boulevards and wide open spaces – don’t forget to visit the famous Betty’s tea rooms. In the afternoon we continue to nearby Ripley Castle. Steeped in history, yet timeless, Ripley Castle has belonged to the Ingilby family since 1308 and is still their family home today. Throughout the ages, this ancient family has played a vivid part in English history. Uncover colourful tales of Ripley’s past as you tour the medieval gatehouse, the Tudor tower and the elegant Georgian rooms. Stroll through picturesque gardens and admire deer grazing in the landscaped estate.

MONDAY We start our journey home, initially travelling to the town of Holmfirth, scene of the comedy series ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. Why not walk round the town which will reveal ‘Nora Batty’s Cottage’, ‘Sid’s Café’ and other sites familiar to fans of the series. We then re-join the coach and continue our journey home.

YOUR HOTEL We stay at the Old Golf House Hotel, originally part of the prestigious Outlane Golf Club surrounded by three acres of beautiful gardens which include a 5-hole pitch and putt green. All of the hotel’s en-suite bedrooms are equipped with tea/coffee making facilities, desk with work space and mirror, direct dial telephone, hairdryer and flat screen television.

Often referred to as the sunniest place in Great Britain and nestled at the foot of the South Downs, Eastbourne has been attracting holiday makers since Victorian times. With its colourful promenades, sandy beaches, quaint shopping streets, it’s not hard to see why.

SUNDAY We visit the City of Chichester for the first stop of our tour. Blending old and new Chichester offers an enticing mix of designer boutiques and charming architecture including the stunning 900 year old Cathedral. We then continue east to the Hadleigh Hotel in in Eastbourne, our base for 4 nights.

MONDAY We visit Wakehurst Place, a 16th century country estate now managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Wakehurst is part of an international conservation project which in 2010 reached the milestone of having conserved seeds from ten percent of the world’s plant species. You’ll be able to explore for yourself the charming natural woodland, lakes and formal gardens. Then, it is onto Lewes - a market town of small, specialist, independent retailers and on certain days, the subtle aromas wafting from Harvey’s Brewery will attract any visitor to Cliffe High Street. Bookshops, boutiques and antique centres sit alongside individual craft workshops, and the restaurants, cafes, and pubs offer delicious choices all year round with real emphasis on local produce. Its medieval streets, old English churches and tiny twittens (a Sussex word for alleyway) allow visitors a glimpse into the true essence of bygone Lewes.

TUESDAY Part of the reason for coming to Eastbourne has to be to enjoy being beside the seaside. Today is a day to do just that as we enjoy a full day at leisure in our host resort. Enjoy a gentle stroll along the flat promenade; enjoy the famous carpet gardens harbour and 1930’s bandstand.

WEDNESDAY We travel along the south coast to Hastings, a pleasant town with plenty to see and do including The Blue Reef Aquarium, St Mary in the Castle or the Old Town Ghost Walk. Then, it is onto Bodiam Castle, one of Britain’s most picturesque and evocative castles. Virtually complete exterior with walls rising dramatically above the moat. Enough of the ruined interior survives to give an impression of medieval castle life. Intriguing, sometimes grizzly tales can often be heard from one of our colourful characters. There are stunning views of the Rother Valley which can be enjoyed from the top of the towers.

THURSDAY Time to start our journey home, though there is still time for us to visit the nearby vibrant and colourful regency resort of Brighton. Here you will have the chance to experience the heritage of the Royal Pavilion, take a walk along the prom, a visit to the quirky antiques shops and boutiques of ‘The Lanes’ or take a ride on Volks Railway, Britain’s oldest electric railway. We then make our early afternoon departure for home.

YOUR HOTEL We stay at The Hadleigh Hotel in Eastbourne, centrally located and just 60 yards level walk from the seafront and only minutes from the bandstand, theatres carpet gardens and shops. The hotel has a lift to all floors whilst each attractively furnished bedroom has en-suite facilities, tea/coffee making facilities, hospitality tray, colour television and central heating.

Join us for a two-day break in our capital city, and take your pick from our choice of top west end shows. London is one of Europe's most exciting and interesting cities - the fabulous shops along Oxford Street and Regent Street are known throughout the world for their 'designer' goods. If you like to explore, the famous landmarks of this historic city can be seen around nearly every corner. The sights and sounds of this bustling capital make shopping and sightseeing an experience that you won't forget.

FRIDAY We depart the West Country and make our way to London. We check in at the Guoman Tower Hotel by London’s famous Tower Bridge. We then continue to Theatre land where you can enjoy some time at leisure ahead of the evening performance of your chosen West End show. At the end of the performance we re-join our coach and make our way back to the hotel.

The Mousetrap @ St Martins Theatre The Mousetrap, a classic tale of mystery, drama and crime. It’s a murder mystery that’s been thrilling theatre audiences for sixty years or so and it’s as popular as ever. More than ten million of us have thrilled to Agatha Christie’s classic tale since it opened in the late ‘50s and it’s just as gripping as ever. Expect a perfect balance between poignant moments and comic relief, with totally convincing stage sets.

Motown the Musical @ Shaftesbury Theatre This is a genuinely exhilarating feel-good show charting Berry Gordy’s amazing journey from featherweight boxer to a heavyweight career as a music industry figure whose talent, passion and determination launched the careers of many a famous soul name. The musical is packed with hits, more than sixty tunes in total including Diana Ross's I Hear a Symphony, You're All I Need to Get By from Stevie Wonder, Where Did Our Love Go by The Supremes, Please Mr Postman by the Marvelettes and masses more... Mary Wells and The Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas, The Contours and, of course, The Jackson 5.

The School of Rock @ The New London Theatre The plot follows the struggling rock singer and guitarist, Dewey Finn. He's been kicked out of his own rock band because of his ridiculous on-stage antics and he's at a loose end, bored and broke. When he decides to disguise himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious private school, all hell lets loose. This is a comedy and, of course, everything goes horribly pear-shaped. But despite a series of madcap misadventures and total disasters, Dewey eventually proves that there's no stopping the school of rock. If you like nothing better than a big, bold musical comedy with a warm heart, this one's for you.

If, however, we have no alternative but to use a similar category of accommodation in a similar location or substitute an alternative coach, route or ferry for any reasons beyond our control, we would not deem this as significant.
