this season presents an invigorating array of musical talent in 11 concerts that demonstrate the energy and intimacy of what we call chamber music.

We launch the season with three concerts that showcase the virtuosity and musicianship of today’s finest young musicians – trumpeter alison balsom, the Jerusalem Quartet, soprano Kate royal and the players of spira mirabilis.

From January 2013, the chamber series joins southbank centre’s year-long festival, The Rest Is Noise, where we chart the fascinating

progression of 20th-century music, from French impressionism to berlin cabaret. artists including soprano barbara hannigan and members of the berliner Philharmoniker bring this musical journey to life.

the season closes with three concerts marking the tenth anniversary of the borletti-buitoni trust, which supports the best young classical music talent.

Widely recognised as the ‘best piano duo in front of an audience today’ (The New York Times), sisters Katia and marielle labèque turn their attention to a period when French music and art influenced culture all over the world – the early 20th century. For this recital the labèques explore a French musical world characterised by a sense of intimacy and a lightness of touch.

satie’s lush and reflective duet Trois morceaux en forme de poire is juxtaposed with ever-popular keyboard works by Debussy and ravel, including the fairytale beauty of ravel’s Mother Goose suite and the musical painting of Debussy’s En blanc et noir, which was inspired by Goya and Velásquez.

The soundtrack of the 20th century

The 20th century and beyond has been fraught with debate and schism about the worth of different music. There was virtually no consensus from the 1920s onwards as to what ‘music of merit’ meant. Concert goers have often been uninterested in, even hostile towards, many 20th-century works.

The Rest Is Noise festival is an attempt to recalibrate this argument by viewing this music through the prism of 20th-century history with its revolutions and counter-revolutions, its major moral and philosophical upheavals around race, gender, faith, political credo and pacifism – and its new relationship to technology and artistic democracy.

alex ross described berlin in this period as ‘the first all-night city, the city without shame,’ a fleeting moment when classical music mixed easily with the worlds of art, fashion, jazz and music theatre.

Presiding over this evening’s intoxicating entertainment are singer Dagmar manzel and narrator robert Gallinowski. they weave ironic observations, political interjections and menacing bohemian wit with cabaret songs by composers such as Kurt Weill, erman, heymann, schoenberg and hindemith.
