Encampment has a Roommate

Of course we all know we are gathered here this week to attend the SERWinter Encampment but did you know that we are not alone? Next door to theDoolies and hiding behind the walls or around the corners are the cadetsattending the 2005 Region Cadet Leadership School. The RCLS program teachesthe cadets core values like integrity, volunteer service, excellence and respect. They are being instructed by Maj Hugh Sloan and Maj Michael Goblet whobelieve that their students are attending this course because they have “hopesand dreams” and are here to “grow and learn”.

The RCLS course is difficult and challenging, and it gives cadets the chance togrow as officers and individuals, as well as a team. In a class taught earlier byMaj Goblet, the question was “what does integrity mean to you?” Variouscadets raised their hands with partial answers and by the end of the lesson, thecadets were enlightened that their previous views of integrity and what itmeans did not equate to a proper definition. Major Goblet stated that anydefinition of integrity is not a proper definition unless it contained the word“honor”. Honor is a quality that no one can take away from someone; however,it is a quality that must be surrendered. This was just the beginning of the newideas that will be presented to these cadets during the 2005 RCLS.

Hair Force

Yesterday in their common room, the staff of Squadron 4 had a

grooming class. Flight Sergeant Umana, along with the rest of theSquadron 4 cadet staff, taught their cadets how to properly fix andmaintain their hair. The class was interactive, with the staff serving asinstructional hair stylists…the CAP way. CAPM 39-1 states, “Hair will beneatly arranged and shaped to present a conservative feminineappearance. Hair in the back may touch, but not fall below, the bottomedge of the collar.”

By doing the Doolies’ hair according to regulation, Sgt Umana and the staff of Squadron 4 have gone theextra mile to ensure that their cadets portray an image of professionalism. Doolie Ashley Grayson fromJuliet flight said, “I liked it, I didn’t know how to do my hair and they taught me.”

additional sleeping gear into the barracks. Although

this might not seem like such a memorable event to

some, these Doolies used this time to apply a very

essential tool—teamwork. While moving the beds,

the cadets got just a taste of the teamwork that will

be required of them this encampment.

Yesterday, Doolies arrived at various locations

around Tyndall to tour Southeast Air Defense Sector

(SEADS), The F-15 Hangar and the First Fighter

Squadron.

Maj or Connor Blackwood, USAF, led a group of

Doolies around an F-15 and inside its maintenance

hangar for a presentation of the jet ’s components.

Doolies learned that the F-15 contains two engines,

ten-foot long afterburners, and a gun that can hold

940 rounds of ammunit ion. Cadet A1C Ben Arthur from

Tennessee said t hat t he t our was “ Pret t y good. I f orgot

that F-15s were so big and…the size of a tennis court!”

Doolies also met a host of USAF speakers including SrA

Barr and SSgt Slater who hold the responsibil i ty of

scheduling F-15 maintenance checks and repair work. F-

15s are not usually kept inside hangars unless a

hurr icane threatens their safety or maintenance work is

needed. “ I found the main tenance par t t he most

interesting because I ’m just general ly interested in

maintenance. Since my

brother wants to be a p i lo t , I

might end up doing

maintenance alongside

[h im] , ” sa id C/ Amn Brennan

McGinley, Mississippi.

Capt Brad Funk of t he

USAF 1st Fighter Squadron invited Doolies to take a

seat in his classroom to imagine themselves as student

p i lo ts. Then he went st r a ight in t o a “ hack,” the A i r

Force way to sequence pi lots’ watches. He then

explained the protocol of the air mission. The speech

created a menta l p ic ture o f what i t i s l i ke to take o f f

and undergo the ACM (dogfight) procedure.

Throughout the tour, Dool ies took in lots of

inform ation f rom our Air Force host s. The F-15 is truly

an impressive and inspir ing aircraft and the tour wi l l

surely be an exper ience not soon forgott en.

The main cause of foot ai lments are

5 P’s

Pr ior Planning Prevents Poor Perf ormance. Dool ies hear t he 5 P’ s being preached al l t hroughout t he

day. The question t hat of t en rem ains is, “ When wil l I ever use t he 5 P’ s?” The RCLS cadet s have the

answer t o t hat quest ion…as long as you are a leader. Yest erday, t hey went t hrough an enl ight ening

class on how to run Unit Meetings. Each cadet is expected to turn in an essay on the way in which

their squadron is currently running their meetings. They are to bring out the weaknesses and the

strengths in their squadron, and provide possible methods for repairing and sustaining the

respective areas. The essay should not only point out strengths and weaknesses of the unit and the

possible ways of making progress, but also present a way for them to use the 5 P’s, prior planning

prevents poor performance, which is the subliminal message in this RCLS class. Remember that the

5 P’s are not just another thing to regurgitate to the staff when asked, but are words for leaders to

l ive by.

The Core Values are the essential qualit ies by which the United States Air Force operates by. The

RCLS cadet s learne d j ust t hat in t he class t hey had yest erday. What are t he Core Values? They are

integri ty f i rst , volunteer service and excel lence in al l we do. Integri ty f i rst holds thecharacterist ics of honesty, trustworthiness, dependabi l i ty and loyalty. Volunteer service starts

with the membership agreement of CAP and USAF, and goes throughout your entire Civil Air Patrol

career. Excel lence in al l w e do. This is t he aspect of t he core values in which your best eff ort is t o

be put f ort h. As impor t ant as t he Core Values are, t hey are quit e overlooked. “ Probably t he most

overlooked aspect of a cadet’ s career,” comment ed C/ Capt Brian McGinley f rom Mississippi Wing.

What does it mean to be a wingman?By Lt Col Lawrence O. Roche

27th Intelligence Support Squadron commander

The Romans, w hi le not t he f i r st t o underst and the cent ral principl e behind having "wingmen, " weresome of t he f i rst t o document t he import ance of t he wing posit ion. The most basic Roman batt lel ines were arr anged wit h t he infant ry in t he center and cavalry on t he wings. The main purpose oft he caval ry was t o protect t he cent er f rom being out f lanked. For the Army t o succeed, i t wasimper at i ve that t he infant ry and cavalry underst ood and fol low ed a pre-arranged plan and movedwit h a single purpose. Separately, neit her t he inf antr y nor t he cavalry st ood much chance atdefeat ing an opponent , but t ogether, watching out for each ot her, t hey were a formidable force.

The Roman Empir e and i t s last ing cont r ibut ions t o t he civi l ized worl d w ould not have been possiblewit hout a wel l -discipl ined Army and sound principl es.

The weapons used t o wage war have changed dr amati cal ly since t he Romans, but t he principl esguiding their em ployment have not. Today, one of t he most import ant and tr ust ed posit ions in aform ation air craft belongs t o t he wingman. Whi le we have exchanged horses for F-15s, t hewingman's j ob remains t he same; t o prot ect t he lead aircraf t .

So what does any of t his have to do w it h us? As Airmen w e are al l part of a m uch larger t eam. The

combined eff ect of individual eff ort s and ski l ls make our Air Force t he most powerf ul air f orce int he world. None of us could do our j obs wit hout t he support of ot hers. We count on our t eammat est o do t heir part so we can do ours. We share a common purpose and we know when w e need help, our t eammat es wi l l be t here t o pi t ch in and make t he mission a success. Al l of us need a wingmant o succeed.

Being a good wingman is a 24-hour a day j ob. The pr inciples apply bot h on and off dut y and areanchored in personal commit ment . Good wingmen have many import ant qual i t ies. First , t hey havea moral compass t hat alw ays point s t rue nort h. They know t he r ight t hing to do and they t akeaction t o do i t . Second, t hey "keep t heir head on a swivel," searching the hori zon for any sign oft rouble and then st epping in t o prevent i t . Third, good wingmen learn to lead j ust as wel l as fol low.We al l m ust be prepared t o st ep up and lead when requir ed, j ust as we m ust al l be ready to f ol low

once a deci sion i s made.
