The Williamstown Action Group of volunteers are holding the Annual General Meeting on Monday 5th February at 7pm in the upstairs room in the Williamstown Soldiers Memorial

Hall. We are looking for many volunteers so if you would like to be involved with commu-nity events and awareness, we would love to see you attend.

We sadly were forced to accept the resignation of Glen Venning, who for 40 years has presided over our meetings and volunteered many hours to the group in this role. Thankyou Glen for all your time, experience, knowledge and help over the many years

you have been on the committee for the Hall and more recently, the Action Group. Deepest sympathies extend to the family of Ian Ross. Ian volunteered as a member on

the Hall Committee and Park Committee for many years, a member of the CFS and also a past Councillor and Chairperson of the District Council of Barossa. Rest in peace Ian.

Your local volunteering contribution was outstanding.

Helen Aberg used to give generous Christmas Presents to her several grandchildren, but the kids never sent thank-you letters, despite the urgings of their respective parents. But then, one year, things changed. Grandma sent a hundred dollar Christmas cheque to each grandchild. The very next day, each child came over in person to thank her. She was telling this to friends of hers, who said “How wonderful. What did you think caused them to become so polite?” “Oh” said Helen, “It was easy. This year I didn’t sign the cheques.”

WILLIAMSTOWN GARDEN CLUB November was a busy outing for the Club. We travelled to Murray Bridge, where we were met by members of the Murray Bridge Social Garden Club, who were our hosts for the day. Our first stop was Serenity Gardens Nursery, which had a large display of garden accessories and gifts, as well as a wide range of potted plants. The Nursery has been in the same family for two generations, and they are hoping that there will be a third generation to take over. We then moved on to a private home in the town, which had a long sloping garden with views to the hills. The beds were of varieties of roses with groundcov-ers and succulents . Geraniums had been trained over a trellis, which looked very effective, and the bougainvilleas trained against a wall made a wonderful splash of colour. A red, 2- seater sports car attracted the attention of our male members. On to the beautiful Sturt Reserve by the river for our picnic lunch. Our host’s President Jack Wells, gave us a brief history of the reserve and the changes that were made to combat the frequent flooding. A prize-winning garden was our next stop and it was easy to see why. The frontage was planted with native shrubs. By contrast the back garden was a formal courtyard setting of roses, espaliered fruit trees and vines. The owners had replaced the lawn with paving, using a beautiful shady Pagoda tree as its focus. Beyond this garden was a thriving veggie patch. Our final stop was across the river to Notts Nursery for more purchases of plants and gifts. The Murray Bridge Club as hosts had given us a wonderful day. Our Christmas lunch will be at the Uniting Church hall on Monday 4th December at 12.00 for 1.pm. Please bring your promised salad or sweet and enjoy an afternoon in the company of fellow gardeners. Christmas Greetings to all our friends, near and far. We look forward to meeting again at our Annual General Meeting on Monday 5th February at 1.pm.

Well, Williamstown didn't receive enough votes for any of the submissions in the local area to go ahead, but we should be proud and applaud those that went to the effort to place a submission and also the local community members who did vote. The Skate Park Submission received 98 votes, The Cycling/Walking Community Safety Link received 87 votes, The Vivian Lewis Harris Reserve Irrigation Project received 42 votes and The Zahra - Women’s Safety & Financial Security received 34 votes. The winning submissions received votes between 160 and 240. They

were a Playground Upgrade at Greenock Centenary Park, A Community Growing Green Space at Two Wells, A Nuriootpa Pedestrian Crossing, A Community Helper’s New Warehouse Construction in Nu-riootpa, A Revamp of the Barossa Farmers Market Amenities Block and Coulthard “The people’s place” - Engaging youth & Community for our Future. We now have some idea of what it takes and will plan and spend a lot more work on our submissions next round. Maybe a .......skate park, an adventure playground, a dog park, the same again. We would love to try again. What can you suggest? How about giving us some ideas to work on?

The Abbeyfield Strawberry Fete was a lovely day set amongst the colourful gardens. Stalls of crafts and food were enjoyed by the many who came along and the strawberries were delicious. Entertainment by George Davies on Piano Accordion, Trevor Bateman on piano near the Devonshire teas and Maddie Whyatt in song. Many thanks to all our volunteers who help to

Christmas Lights – Register Your House!

Every year, the residents of Williamstown have the opportunity to enter their home in the “Best

Christmas Lights” competition. This year, we are asking that all entries be received by 20th November,

in time for the next edition of Willy Wagtail. We will print a list of homes that have entered, in the

December edition. This allows families to create their own “Christmas Light Trail” throughout the town.

(You can just nominate to say you have lights on display, but not enter the competition if you prefer).

Again, contact Debbie – number above.

We have only 2 homes that have registered with us for the Christmas light trail but I am sure there will be many more who did not register. Make sure you have a look at 43 Whiteman Rd, Williamstown, 29 Queen Street. Williamstown and Carlisle Street

Williamstown & District Historical Society

Remembrance Day Summary 2017

The traditional Remembrance Day Service conducted in Williamstown was well attended by the

townspeople as well as student representatives from both Williamstown and St Jakobi Primary

schools. (both schools placed lovely wreaths at the Memorial)

The Service was conducted by local celebrant Robyn Dennard with support from Anthony Jessop

who recited the ODE and Julie Burridge who read the story of Beersheba . (where 100 years ago, the

Australian Light Horse charged the town which was strongly garrisoned by Turkish troops and

captured it against the odds, thereby opening the way for victory on the Sinai Peninsula.)

Pre and post Service music was provided by local Piper Craig MacDonald and CFS Captain Steve

Elliott was our Flagman.

Once again we were privileged to have Steve Dear on his horse Cavalier, representing the Light

Horse mounted troopers from the First World War. Steve & Arnold Wilson arrived in a Second World

War Jeep . My thanks to these local people for taking the time and trouble to add a bit more

atmosphere to our Service .

Thanks to all those who took the time to pay their respects and remember those who died for us and

thanks to the members of the Southern Barossa Men’s Shed who helped set up and pack up .

Trevor Jessop

Arnold Wilson, World War Two veteran, remembers…….

Did you know you can have a copy of the Willy Wagtail emailed direct to you each month FREE?

I admit we have had some hiccups over the last year getting it sorted, especially with the

change in editors, but we have finally sorted that out. What’s best is you can see all the pages in full colour, especially the great photos we are being

provided with recently, and we are looking after the environment by using less paper and reducing the cost of putting the publication into distribution. Just send an email with your details, requesting the email copy to [email protected] and

I can add you to the list of subscribers.

Fancy Dress At a Fancy Dress Social for children in the aid of the Memorial Hall in 1932, prizes were awarded to Thelma Buckley, Mary Grigg, R Sutton, B Bell, Ella Filsell, R Brown, L Bain, E Tennant and several others. The Past Underfoot Removing floor coverings in their house, Mr & Mrs Hull have uncovered a number of newspapers from 1932 and a few items of particular interest to Williamstown. According to The Chronicle, for example, T Argent, playing that year on the Williamstown Golf Course, holed out in one, over 137 yards. Mr Argent was the Williamstown Butcher. It was also noted that the road to the unemployed camp was in very bad shape. Three men returning from it were shaken when their car overturned. Park Report The Bush Picnic raised $3,000 which helped repay a loan from the Council. After completion of renova-tions, the Hon Tom Casey re opened the pool. During this year, the caretaker has been changed, power boxes have been provided for the Caravan Park and a new water supply has been laid to the Caravan Park, football sheds and toilets. An application for a grant has been submitted to the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport. Builder We are advised of the recent death of Amos Kennewell, the Gawler builder who supervised the erection of the Williamstown Memorial Hall in 1923-24. He had previously built the Uniting Church’s Sunday School. Mr Kennewell, better know as Dick, was born in Green Gully, now under the Barossa Reservoir. He was an authority on the history of the Barossa Gold Mines. He was a brother to Mrs. Rachel Randall of Williamstown. Williamstown Cemetery There are 990 recorded burials and or plaques in the Cemetery. The first burial was in 1868 and the oldest person was 101 years old.

BAROSSA REGION FAMILY DRUG SUPPORT.

Many thanks to St Jakobi School for providing the venue for the Family Drug Support meetings the Southern Barossa Alliance hosted in 2017.

We had an average of 14 people at the monthly meetings with all attendees reporting that the meetings were very beneficial in helping them cope with the drug or alcohol addiction of

a family member or friend. The meetings provide both Counsellor and peer support and we are planning to continue them in 2018. Many, many thanks to Kath Ashton from FDS for travelling from McLaren Vale each month and for her expertise, pragmatism and unbridled

passion for helping families affected by drug addiction. If you have any queries about the Barossa and Region meetings please contact:

Simon Taylor (SBA) Ph: 0439509207 or Kath Ashton (FDS) Ph: 0401732129. If you need support the Family Drug Support Line is available 24/7 on Ph: 1300 368 186
