NEW FORMAT, MORE TO READ, SAME FUN! Welcome to the new look Café Capers! While the original design proved immensely popular, we decided to make it even better and flip it on its side. This makes the paper much easier to handle when you are enjoying a meal at a small table - or sitting rather close to someone who might want to read it with you. The content remains fun, friendly and informative - we go whale watching with John Woodbury , celebrate the 15th anniversary of Safety in Numbers Choir, take a little dab at all the dads in readiness for Father’s Day and publish the winners of our Mothers Day competition. We have also been inspired at how Karin and Jeanne have coped with the aftermath of a fire that recently gutted the kitchen of their restaurant 14 Peels Place. (See p3)

Fathers Day September 4 Don’t forget Fathers Day is on the horizon, with plenty of scope to show your appreciation for your dad. We have checked out some interesting gift ideas and activities which range from a nice little home-made gift to exciting adventures such as swimming with whale sharks or abseiling down a cliff ! However we specially loved Bill Cosby’s delightful observation: “Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is the soap-on-a-roap.”

Gourmet GossipWinter Warmers By Rebecca CommonsOk, time to tuck up warm and make the most of the winter season’s foodie offerings. So many varieties of apple, from the crisp tart Granny Smith to the mellow Gala: pile up a cake stand with them and you have edible art! For a delicious dessert melt butter and brown sugar in a pan then add sliced apples. Poach for about 10 minutes, sprinkle with cinnamon and serve with a bowl of thick custard. Winter and potatoes are a match made in heaven. Try Ranger Russets - sliced thinly and cooked with onions, herbs and stock. Bake slowly in the oven, then top with cheese: a homely accompaniment for fish or meat.If you are a cauliflower lover look for firm, pale coloured heads with deep green leaves. I love their versatility, from soul warming thick soups to a sprightly Indian Aloo Gobi. Cauliflower are high in vitamins A and C, as well as in calcium, fibre, folates and phytochemicals. Other favourites are pumpkin, leeks, shallots and kale. Make a point of stocking up on some of the region’s red wines - on a wintery day a glass of red, mulled with warm spices is just the kind of comfort we all need!

Don’t wreck a sublime chocolate experience by feeling guilty.. L BrodyIf God is watching us, the least we can do is be entertaining.

If you want a place in the sun, you have to expect a few blisters. Loretta Young

Keep calm and carry on!Kitchen fires in restaurants are not uncommon, but the result can often be disastrous, especially for a new business venture. 14 Peels Place opened its doors on February 7 by mother-daughter business partners, Karin Marsland and Jeanne van Zyl but in late May the kitchen was a blackened, charred mess. Still shocked by the experience, Jeanne said it could have been worse if she hadn’t acted fast. Within days the doors had re-opened albeit with a limited menu and a determination ‘to keep calm and carry on.’“We have learnt never to take anything for granted and it is also vital to ‘tick all the boxes’ when it comes to locating fire equipment in accessible places, and making sure everything works properly. The building was insured so we can rebuild the kitchen, but we regret not having taken out income protection insurance to cover wages and time for renovations.” Meanwhile as life slowly returns to normal, Jeanne and Karin can look on the bright side and laughingly offer tips on cooking with ‘flare’, how to make flambé cherry pie, barbecued steak, burnt biscuits….. A Phoenix Party is also being planned!

Chargrilled Tomato Soup Shared by Karin and Jeanne, 14 Peels PlaceIngredients: 1kg of fresh, ripe tomatoes; 1 Spanish onion; 3 cloves garlic; 1 apple; olive oil; salt and cracked black pepper; brown sugar to taste; herbs – dried Italian to suit (ie basil, coriander, thyme). Method: Skin onion and garlic, peel and core apple, chop tomatoes roughly and lay in a deep sided baking tray. Add glugs of olive oil and season with salt, pepper and sprinkle with brown sugar. Bake in oven, 200 degrees, for half an hour or until onions are soft. When cooked place in a saucepan or deep bowl and use a stick blender to combine the chargrilled ingredients, then season to taste. (The apple reduces the acidity and the brown sugar gives the caramelised flavour.) This is a very versatile recipe - you can also reduce the liquid and use as a pizza base, or add cream or a splash of balsamic vinegar for a bit of variation.

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. ~ Mark Twain If you can’t convince them, confuse them. ~ Harry S. Truman

Odds and EndsNoongar Notes. Word: Djook means sister. Season: Winter - June/July is Makuru. The coldest season when rains replenish inland water resources.
