Southfork Women’s Club

January 3, 2018, This was the first meeting of the new year and a very special one because it was for nominations and elections of new officers. Thirty three women braved the wind, rain and cold and thanks to all who attended!! The 2017 officers served hot coffee, juice and donuts as a special (pause) before the meeting to get everyone warmed up and ready for the rest of the meeting. Usually refreshments are served right after the meeting and it was a great welcome surprise.. After the reading of the minutes and treasurers report the question was asked of everyone of who would like to help our group and volunteer and nominate or be nominated for all of the available offices which were for all four (4), President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer………

The election of Officers for 2018 was not easy! This took quite a while and a lot of thought for many but here is the list that finally accepted and everyone was so elated and happy with the picks. This was after many declined to serve!

Nancy Mc Callan, President, Gail Young, Vice President, Carol Reno, Secretary, Dot Cady, Treasurer

Betty Butler agreed to Chair the Soup Supper, an important fund raiser and the tentative date is the first week in March!

Our guest speaker was from Cornerstone Agency, a Dade City agency that provides services for young women in need. Very interesting and a great speaker.

The Women’s Club needs your support in order to continue our work helping “neighbors in need”. If you believe Charity should begin at home, come help!

Thanks to all who helped make this a great year of 2017

This award winning trio consistently has top 40 songs on the

radio charts. In 2013 they were voted, “Top 10 New Trio” by the Singing

News fans. They perform more than 250 times each year in churches,

auditoriums, and on gospel cruises. They also perform at Dollywood in

Pigeon Forge, TN each year. The Hyssongs have been featured in the Singing

News several times and were the cover article in the Christian Voice in

2012. Their goal is to see people come to Christ and others uplifted and

encouraged through their ministry!

Dell, Susan and Richard Hyssong travel full-time as known as the award-

winning Hyssongs. The family’s classical music background, along with their

harmony and specific chord strutures, lend them a unique sound that has

made quite an impact on audiences.

The group has been singing together as a family for more than 21 years.

The Hyssongs have received many accolades for their quality,

inspirational Southern Gospel sound.

This is the first gospel group ever invited to Southfork and we hope all

who like this type of music come and enjoy.

This is DARBY who is a proud member of the LAYNE family – ROGER and L0NNIE! Darby is a seven-year old (to be eight in April) Flat-Coated, Black Retriever and beautiful! (Sorry, Darby – handsome). The Laynes got him at eight weeks old. He is so well trained and behaved. His favorite toy is his red rubber ball (see in his mouth)..retrieves it, and chews and drools. Ha! That ball never gets far away from him and he will run as far as it takes to fetch it! Darby’s favorite treat is Mother Hubbard Dog Bones and gets them often for being a “good dog.” Darby gets to walk and run several times a day. He does relax in the home, but it’s a no-no to get on furniture! I can’t believe how patient this young man is. He’s very lucky to have a caring, loving home too! You may be well-behaved and trained, but you’re still a real beauty….I mean “handsome”, Darby! Say hello when you see this guy! He’s friendly

and loveable!

Here’s BRANDI, a seven-year old, certified service/mobility dog! Brandi is KIM WEAVER’S right-hand gal! She has been trained and tested to ADI standards. DAVE is so thankful Kim has her too, as Brandi gets clothes from the dryer and retrieves other objects as requested/needed by Kim. Brandi loves to work. She does take time out to enjoy her favorite toy…guess what? A duck! How adorable! She also loves Zuke’s Peanut Butter Natural Mini-treats! Am sure she gets them for many rewards in her work! Kim says that Brandi is so thankful for all the friends that she has made on her walks within the Southfork area! We have to realize this young lady as such a treasure in The Weaver’s lifestyle. Brandi is such a blessing, and ones like her….for so many folks! God Bless them all! By the way, Brandi and the Weaver’s won the Christmas Golf Cart Parade here at Southfork this past December! I wanted to post a

picture, but will do soon!

Well, I would be remiss if I didn’t feature my little Toby in one of these pet issues! This little pure-bred Chihuahua belongs to me (JEAN DEISS) and LARRY RUFFNER! Toby (Tobias) was born in Ft. Worth, TX, and I’ve had him since eight weeks of age (first house dog I ever had). He’s now 12 -13 in March. He’s a pretty spunky guy with some attitude problems at times, but he is such a lovable “mom’s” boy! Larry (AKA Step-Dog-Daddy) has spoiled him too and refers to Toby as “The Mouth of The South.” That is very true and anyone who’s ever been near our house can hear him barking and patrolling the area! It’s kind of a nuisance many times, but he is such a lovable, caring, and sweet little guy….most of the time! Toby loves his Beneful Peanut Butter Chewies after the afternoon outing and nothing but his Bacon Flavor Pup-peroni at bedtime! Favorite toy….a fury Teddy Bear!

Please help me show off your pet! Call me at 863-602-1535. Also, it is very important that we pick up after our

pets! They can’t do that….we can…and as responsible pet owners, we need to do that! Til later…..Jean Deiss

“You know you are from Southfork when”

If you are on the internet and in FACEBOOK, please look us up on the above title and “like”

so that you can be added into our community communications page.

This closed group is for communicating all the latest area events, community

events, messages from the office, resident passing, birthdays and

anniversaries, chatting and so much more. This is our so called “facebook

newsletter” in between our actual receiving of the newsletter.

“ No” non-members can review any comments…..

The only rules that must be followed are, no bashing of others, no politics, no religion and no

negativity or it will be deleted and if it happens more than once the member will be deleted.

Sorry, but no one wants to hear all of this bashing of others. People can voice their negative

opinions elsewhere and not in this group.

This is a social website so that all Southfork Residents can interact and this is a place where

we can relay messages and also communicate with our snowbirds during the summer

months. Snowbirds can find out what we are doing locally and we can find out where they

are and what great sites and great “weather” they are enjoying. I will continue to send out

the emails when someone passes away or if there is anything exciting going on here in

Southfork or if Management need to send something of importance out.

Also asking for all birth dates and wedding anniversary dates and no year’ s needed!!!!

If you want to be in the email group and are not on facebook but want to receive special

Southfork updates, send me a message with your email address at [email protected] and

I will place you on this mailing list.

Thanks, Phyllis

Hello Southfork Community,

I (Carol Melia) have been collecting for a Power Ball Lottery Pool for the last few months and we here

in the community would like to try our luck to see what all we can win.

Is there anyone interested in joining the rest of us in this bi-weekly pool???? For Power Ball the cost

of a ticket is $2.00 and only 1 ticket per person can be purchased and no more than 2 per household

can join. Please check the Southfork Facebook page for times and days of collections.

I live at 11045 Mustang and you can contact me for the times of the collections at 516-424-2472 or for

any questions.

Quilting at Southfork

The quilters at Southfork meet at the clubhouse every Wednesday at 9am.

If you love sewing, talking about sewing and having fun we are open for new members. In

the past we have made quilts for charity and make at least one item for the Women’s bazaar

annually to raffle.

We help each other with sewing, ideas and exchanging sewing skill. All residents who enjoy

sewing are welcome.

Phone Directory

Just a reminder ………………. Phone directories should be arriving by the end of February

and who knows maybe sooner.

I will bring them to the office after they are delivered to me and if anyone wants a new one,

just ask at the office. If they arrive sooner I will send out a mass email and place on our

Southfork Facebook page.………..So when you go to pay your March rent stop and ask if they

have been brought in yet.

Also, if any errors or corrections need to be made, I can make them but they will not show

until the next directory in 2019 when the next book comes out. Remember, each year the

deadline for additions/corrections must be made by December 1st.

Thanks, Phyllis Grossi

A special thank-you to all residents of Southfork who collected greeting card covers and donated

them to be transformed into Christmas stockings for prisoners.

I was asked when I would collect again. Collecting is all year long. Just drop them off at our house. I

deliver them in March. Soon after they start on the next year of sox. They supply approximately 1000

to the prisons.

Happy New Year to you and your families!

Carol Barnett.....

Article submitted by Kathy Gallick At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel at our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time went by, other people boarded this train, and they will be significant; our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of your life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves. The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on. I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey.

Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train.

HAND AND FOOT CARD GAME

This is one great game that has caught on by leaps and bounds.

It has been played at least the last 17 years or more that I know

of here in Southfork.

It really started growing with much interest when the first Hand

& Foot Tournament was held in year 2007. It became so

popular and everyone enjoyed the party atmosphere of the tournament and looked forward to the

great challenge which was held each year in January with monetary awards given out and so

much food to enjoy during the entire game, now one of the most popular games. This has been

one of the most consistent weekly games and gets better each week.

Hand and Foot is a North American game related to Canasta, in which a player is dealt two

sets of cards - the hand, which is played first, and the foot, which is played when the hand has

been used up. There are numerous variations of this game and Southfork uses the basic rules

although every area has its own rules.

Each game consist of at least 4 Hands (60, 90, 120, 150 points). If 4 hands are completed, the

team with the highest score is the winner. (This does not mean there must be a score of 10,000 or

more.)

Games are played on Monday evenings and on Thursday mornings. Players draw for partners

and then the challenge begins. A lot of humor and excitement in this game and for anyone who

likes playing cards this would be easy to learn and many willing players who will help and teach

all newcomers. Come early , at least 15 min before the game starts because of the choosing of

partners and getting set up.

Times of the games are listed in the newsletter on the activities page in the back of the newsletter.

A smile

“It’s proven that it takes less muscles to smile than to frown”

Submitted by Norm Conaty

A smile costs nothing, but gives much…..It takes but a moment, but the memory of it usually

lasts forever. None are so rich that can get along without it-and none so poor- but that can

be made rich by it.

It enriches those who receive, without making poor those who give.

It creates sunshine in the home, fosters good will in business and is the best antidote for

trouble, and yet it cannot be begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is of no value unless it is given

away.

Some people are too busy to give you a smile---give them one of yours----for the good lord

knows that no one needs a smile so badly as she or he who has no more smiles left to give.

LIBRARY

The Library is for the entire community to use and hope all of you residents

take advantage of what we have available in it. We get new books and magazines in all the time and

a lot of good authors and various subjects..

Many times we have puzzles going or you can use the 2 computers that are available. There is a

bulletin board for advertising so come in and look at what is available in that room. You may be

surprised at what is in there.

If you have any questions, please contact Katie Bellnier or Louise Murray.

Beautiful, Christmas in Southfork

I hope you all took some time to drive through our beautiful park during this past Christmas Season.

Thank you Kevin & Kim for making our entrance so inviting. There were so many homes beautifully

decorated, and everyone in awe of all the labor and preparation that each homeowner completed on their

homes to make the park look so inviting and cheerful. Beautiful Mangers, floating stars, Santas,

Reindeer, and so much more. Not enough room and space to show all the decorated homes but just

wanted to thank everyone for all the great effort.

Goes to show you that you do not have to be in the North to see such beauty as there was here in

Southfork!

CHRISTMAS POTLUCK 2017

Article and photo submitted by Kathy Gallick

FINALLY, a picture of the crew who help put together our wonderful feast. Thank you girls,

your hard work is certainly appreciated.

Tom, our President opened our dinner with the salute to the flag. Hollis offered a Prayer of

thanks.

And then the fun began. Each table strategically approached the dinner table and carefully

chose their dinner choices, and there were many choices.

Desserts, desserts and desserts. How blessed we are to share Christmas Dinner with family

and friends.

May 2018 bring health and happiness to all.

God Bless America.
