Our Visit to Southhaven by Georgie L and Tahlia B (5/6E)

On Tuesday, 18th September, Tahlia, Georgie, Tiana, Sebastian, Bailey, Charlie C, Charlie A, Zara, Annamaria,

Natasha, Jessica, Alexander, Summer, Shia, Billy and Jasmine set off to the Southhaven Aged Care Nursing

Home to read and make connections with the elderly residents. All of us had a great time and were surprised

to make very strong connections so quickly with the residents, regardless of the age difference. It was

wonderful to see them smile when we walked into the room; their eyes lit up and they were very happy to

see us and we were happy to see them. After reading, chatting and laughing with them, we gave a hand-

knitted blanket to the nursing home and thanked David and Carmen who work at Southhaven for allowing

Lugarno students to have this great opportunity. We would like to give a special thanks to Mrs Williams, Mrs

Makryllos, Mrs Burns and Mrs Psaltis for transporting us to and from the venue and another thanks to Mrs

Makryllos for organising this lovely event!

Our Visit to Southhaven by Bailey L and Charlie C (3/4ST)

Honk! Honk! Driving in the LPS teachers’ cars, we were so excited. The LPS SRC students had been asked to

the Southhaven Aged Care Nursing Home. When we got there, we went up three sets of stairs and into the

room with all the elderly residents. We read lots of books to them. We also gave them a gift – a knitted purple

and white blanket. When we gave them the blanket, they provided us with morning tea. It was a delicious

muffin and a tasty orange juice. When we finished the extraordinary morning tea, we read to them a bit

more. Then it was time to go. It was an amazing experience!

Premier’s Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Annabelle (3/4J), Natasha (3/4B), Tahlia (5/6E) and Constance (5/6H) who proudly

represented LPS at the Premier’s Spelling Bee Regional Finals at Connells Point PS last Wednesday. The girls

did a great job in competing against the best spellers from local schools. We’re very proud of you all!

Sporting Stars

Congratulations to our nine students who represented LPS at the Sydney East Carnival last Tuesday at

Homebush: Bailey L (3/4ST), Cameron A (5/6E), Sienna L (2D), Georgie L (5/6E), Mia C (5/6H), Tahlia B (5/6E),

Lukas R (3/4B), Annamaria P (5/6H) and Kate A (5/6H).

Our LPS representatives did our school proud in displaying great effort and sportsmanship. Well done to

Bailey (3/4ST) and Georgie (5/6E) who have been successful in proceeding to the State Athletics Carnival on

the 18th and 19th October – what an outstanding achievement! Bailey has qualified for the State Athletics

Carnival in shot put, discus and 200m and Georgie has qualified for 800m, 1500m and discus.

At assembly last Friday, KR and their talented teacher, Mrs Rainford presented a short film they had created

through Filmpond. The film explored how KR students use good manners at LPS. If you weren’t able to attend

Gardening Club!

The Lugarno PS Gardening Club has been meeting this year and is open to students in Years 1-6. This

program runs at lunchtime on Tuesdays (1:25-1:45pm).

It is an opportunity for students interested in the environment and gardening to be involved around

our school in a very practical way. Activities include weeding, soil preparation, mulching, planting and

watering. All tools and materials are provided.

To ensure the safety of all students, places are limited. Students will only be able to participate if they

are wearing a hat.

Students are supervised by Mrs Wilkie and former LPS teacher and volunteer, Mrs Thomson.

Expressions of interest are now being accepted for Term 4. Interested students need to complete the

form below, have it signed by a parent/caregiver, and return it to Mrs Wilkie by Friday 13th October.

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey:

Information for parents and carers

Tuesday, 19th September 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

The Tell Them From Me Parent Feedback Survey – Term 3, 2017 - REMINDER

A note was sent home on the 10th August to inform parents that our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. We would greatly appreciate your feedback and participation in this survey. Conducting this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or

computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely

confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 21 August and 13 October.

Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much

appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au. To access the survey for our school, please go to: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/lugarno

Thank you. Kind regards, Justine Williams Principal
