County SoccerThe boys soccer team

defeated Pike, 1-0, to advance to the semi-finals of the Marion County boys soccer tournament. This is only the second time the team has advanced this far in the county tournament. The team plays tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. at North Central against Perry Meridian.

Huangci will perform with the SHS symphony orchestra next Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the auditorium. Huangci has performed at Carnegie Hall as well as in several countries.

“It’s a very big deal that she is coming here,” orchestra teacher Elizabeth Levin said.

Tickets for Wednesday’s concert are $1.

Around 70 SHS students traveled to Fort Wayne on Tuesday, Sept. 25 to hear a speech delivered by Burmese democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Suu Kyi is a former Nobel Peace Prize winner who was placed under house arrest in Burma for the better part of two decades by the military junta in that country because of her pro-democracy advo-cacy. She’s currently a Member of Parliament in the Burmese government.

The trip was organized by EL teacher Amy Peddie and

government teacher Bonnie Tempest.

Burmese juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA and AP and honors govern-ment students were offered spots on the trip.

The SHS students, along with a contingent from Perry Meridian, had to depart at 5:15 a.m. in order to be in their seats on time for Suu Kyi’s speech.

“It’s...once in a lifetime,” senior Daniel Hnin said. “She fights for the democracy, not only for majority, but also all minority groups in Burma.”

returned to SHS from 6 -8 p.m. on Tuesday after the Fort Wayne trip to complete college applications for College Go! Week. Volun-teers from BACI (Burmese American Community Institute) came to help out.

“I am so proud to work with students who have such a strong commitment to their education and thankful to the BACI members who were willing to give their time to help our seniors!” EL teacher Amy Peddie said.

Long day for seniors

Southport students celebrated another suc-cessful Homecoming celebration Sept. 14-15.

The weekend kicked off with the homecom-ing parade on Friday, featuring board members, school clubs, teams, the Homecoming court and classes. The parade also featured Grand Marshal former MMA fighter and Southport graduate Chris Lytle.

Following the parade was the Homecoming football game, in which SHS beat Bloomington

South, 56-33. At halftime, seniors Tanner Musser and Bria Wright were named Homecoming king and queen were crowned.

Closing the Homecoming weekend was the dance, which was held on Saturday. Over 400 students attended.
