PRESIDENT’S REPORT

BRIAN TROUVILLE

Another great year for us with an increase in

membership,

increased storage

facility and a

safety boat on the

way. And what a

privilege for our

Club to have Mitch

Hughes selected in

the Australian

under 18's Team

to compete at the

World Junior Championships in Canada, and Nick Dawe

selected in the Australian University Team to contest

the World University Games. Both athletes performed

exceptionally well against the best in the world,

missing the A Finals by narrow margins

We have, as an objective, to provide a support

infrastructure and a Training environment to give our

paddlers their best chance in Elite competition.

Our support structure, of course, is the wonderful

group of parents and our hard working committee led

by the workaholic Yvette Graf

and family, Lorrae and Al

Thomson, Luke Hagan, Jacquie

Tang, Lee Cotterell, Glen Rees,

Keith Hughes, Rod Smith, and

Ross Smith.

Our thanks once again to our

generous sponsors TRADIES,

SUTHERLAND SHIRE COUNCIL,

MANGO RACING, Arthurs by the River and Noosa Blue.

Our patron JOHN FARRELL and a small group of families

who responded to our plea for a safety boat, Richard

Ford, Paul Moses, Brian Cowan who will supply the

slickest little Tinney you will see on the Woronora

River.

So where

to from

here? Our

long term

plan is to

build a Club

House and

now most

of our

expenditure is out of the way, it is back on track with

the Building Fund.

We have a very strong squad of young paddlers

training at the moment and I believe we are setting up

for a pretty good year in Sprint Competition. It would

be nice for you all to be selected to go to Europe next

year, I haven't been to Paris for some time !

So plenty more to accomplish this year, NSW sprint

series has started and our first major test will be

Adelaide GP1 first week in December,

So thank you once again for your

contribution to the Club's

success...come along for the ride

this Summer, you will enjoy...

Brian Trouville – President

RACE DIRECTOR- LUKE HAGAN

Hey Busters, Another year gone but I like these reports as I get to reflect on the on our achievements since our last AGM.

Again there's too many to note but these are the stand outs for me. * 2012 Marathon series - At the last event we had it in the bag (so we thought) but finished the series with a fine 2nd place. We learnt that it ain’t over until it’s over and the importance of boat

maintenance. The conditions on the day

were pretty horrible for our juniors. * Some really good results at GP1 Adelaide with 6 SSP competitors. * Mitch representing us at GP2 Victoria * We had 11 competitors at GP3 to finish the series on a high with good results in individual and team events. * We had our Christmas race and the start of the K4 challenge with our mates across the river. * Another 10 paddlers competed at the NSW Sprint Championships. * We had an early start in Wagga Wagga for the Marathon series with a fantastic representation at The Woronora and Swallow Rock events. * Interclub handicap, K2 and K4 challenge. We must be the only club in NSW to have 1000m events outside of the Regatta Centre. Lane Cove Kayak Club was invited and they too are keen to make it an annual event. I can see this will be growing larger than life in the coming years. * We just introduced the club point score for Saturday time trials and it's already raising some fierce but healthy competition. * Sadly we lost Rod - but he's still alive and paddling. He's always welcome and we would love to see his smiling face and antics more often (maybe as a competitor). There you go Rod there's a challenge made public. Anyway you have to use up that lifetime membership. * Nick Dawe competed in the World University Games, great work Nick.

* And then there was Mitch "The Guru" Hughes representing Australia in the World Junior Canoe Sprint Champs. His consistent hard work and commitment paid off - Thanks for your efforts Mitch; your success inspires all of your fellow paddlers. So yes it was another eventful year made possible by so many who helped throughout. A special thanks to Rod, Brian, Lorrae and Yvette for their exhausting efforts, all of our committee members and parents. A big thankyou to our sponsors: Tradies, Mango Racing, Arthurs by The River, Noosa Blue and Response for Life. Wow we need your support and it’s been great so far. I couldn't finish without thanking all of our paddlers, young and younger for providing a fun and positive environment for us all to enjoy. All the best for next year, sorry for the long report but you deserve it !!!!! Go Busters

LIFE MEMBER- ROD SMITH

I have just been looking through some old photo's at various stages of our clubs growth. Not only has our club grown but our junior's themselves in a matter of three years have really grown up. I recommend for everyone to have a stroll down memory lane and have a close look at yourselves and how far you have come. No names mentioned but there were little fatty's and now trim young looking kids have developed into good looking young adults. Scrawny kids now with healthy looking bodies. It makes me feel good to know I have had some input to our clubs development. I am not

SOUTHSIDE PADDLERS INC

overly concerned about winning but it is nice when it happens. I am at my proudest just to watch our junior's on the water competing. To me that is a win. The other side to that is the other competitors coming up and saying “how great ssp are going”. We had a great marathon season last year but unfortunately we fell off this season. In some cases it has to do with study, sometimes distance but i am sure we will make a comeback. The good news now is juniors only pay $10 to enter a marathon race. Our inter club k4 race went well and we still hold the trophy, well done guy's. I feel very privileged that I have shared the last three years with you. Thank you and I will always have fond memories and remember

SECRETARY’S REPORT - YVETTE GRAF

It is my pleasure to submit the 3rd Annual Report for Southside Paddlers in the Season of 2011-2012. As secretary I wear a few hats for the club. Registrar – our membership grew again from 46- 53. The online payment system for our club is working well and with training fees now in the most being collected online, we have a very manageable system for a small club. I look forward to the changes being implemented by Australian Canoeing and Paddle NSW with the creation of a one stop payment facility for membership being developed. I am also been asked to assist AC, from a club perspective, in the testing out the new website and membership system. Communications: I manage the day to day of the club website, I write the content of the newsletters, update the calendar, social media posts on facebook and twitter, Compilation the Annual Report. So you should always know what is happening. Thanks to all the photographers – we have a great visual library of our clubs events and members.

Grants and forms and letters!: I have spent a ‘few hours’ filling out online forms for applications for Grants or licences and other requirements of being a club, or writing letters to get assistance for our members from the state or national body. But if we are going to get a club house built or make sure our members are supported then those jobs have to be done. It was wonderful this year to receive out of the blue the $5000 grant from the NSW Government to go towards improving our facilities for our members. I think the ‘thing’ I am most proud about this year was that we were approved by Tradies and Response for Life to get support for the acquisition of the AED – Defibrillator. It is now installed in the main container and full of potential and possibility that I hope we do never have to apply. I am not sure any other kayak club in NSW has one, or even Australia. I extend my thanks to the Committee, Brian, Ross and

Lorrae for making this club just happen. To our paddlers, who turn up to train, pull a boat and paddle out of the container and get your program completed for the day, wash your boat off and put it away again, there is a lot that goes into making that happen so easily for you to achieve your goals in paddling. But that is why we are here. To our Race Director Luke, our timekeeper Glen, Lee our apparel manager ( and now Jacquie) for all their support and guidance and to everyone

else who has helped along the way and been part of the good ship SSP.

To Rod, who laid the keel for this club, thank you. You have left your mark and set us on a good course. Lastly, thank you to my family for their support. Enjoy the report.

Always keep smiling! Yvette Graf

TREASURER’S REPORT

LORRAE THOMSON

Well another successful year has come and gone, there has been much activity in the finances this last twelve

months. The club has moved along

well and is in a good financial position with funds available for a variety of purchases for example the club marquee and a generator. The club collected around $5000 in memberships and another $3000 in training

fees and bbq’s. We were fortunate enough to

obtain two grants, one from the Tradies and one from the Government, we are waiting and hoping to put these monies toward some sort of club house, or at least a change room and a possible warm shower, it is a work in progress. Without the amazing talents of Yvette these grants would not have happened, it is Yvette that fills out the never ending paper work and we have much to be thankful for, with her commitment to the club. The club has sold $5,300 worth of boats and there has been a number of uniform purchases that all add up. We as a club have had to spend a considerable amount on boat repairs and boat parts, this totalling $4,340. There has been many successes with our paddlers those still grasping at their technique and those that have made the club proud. We congratulate all paddlers keep up the good work.

Once again thanks go to Brian for his persistence and perseverance for the pursuit of excellence. His passion for the sport is unending and we are fortunate to have him as our Coach. It is sad to have said good bye to Rod this season, Rod was the instigator and originally asked Brian to come and see a couple of his young paddlers that he was coaching, Brian believed they had potential and soon after Southside became an idea that is now an up and coming club. Many paddlers went on to achieve and are still achieving in the sport, Rod and Brian have instilled a love and respect for the sport and this is something that will stay forever with those that have been coached by these two men. Thank you to all members for paying their memberships and fees on time, you are making my job easier every day. Thank you to Lee Cotterell for her uniform organising and now to Jacque who has kindly taken over from Lee. The uniforms look great and it is wonderful to see our club members dressed so smartly. Happy paddling looking forward to another great year, and a big Thank You to Ross for checking the books and understanding my unique way with excel .
