FROM THE NORTHWOODS LEAGUE

Dear Huskies Fans,

Welcome to historical Wade Stadium and the sixteenth season of Duluth Huskies action in the 25thseason of play in the Northwoods League. “The Wade” continues to be one of the finest venues in allof America in which to watch a baseball game.

You never know where those you are seeing in the Wade now will go from here. For example, Terry Collins, who formerly was the Duluth Huskies’ manager in 2009 was named the New York Mets manager one year later in 2010. Over the years 13 Huskies have made it to the Major Leagues as well.

I, along with owner Michael Rosenzweig and the entire Duluth Huskies staff, hope you enjoy today’s Northwoods League action, sample some of the excellent ballpark fare at the concessions stands, or pick up a souvenir to show your loyalty to Duluth’s hometown team. Come back often, and when the team is on the road go to www.northwoodsleague.com to connect to the Northwoods League’s high-definition webcasts to catch Huskies action all season long.

I hope to see all of you on July 24th to celebrate our 24th Northwoods League All-Star Game at Homer Stryker Field in Kalamazoo. And, as always, have a great time out with the Huskies!

Sincerely,

Gary HooverPresidentNorthwoods League

FROM THE PRESIDENT AND OWNER

Dear Duluth Huskies fans and visitors,

As owner of the Duluth Huskies since 2011, I have had the opportunity to see this proud Northwoods League affiliate continue to grow and expand our fan experience in this ballpark. This season marks a special milestone, the 25th anniversary season of the Northwoods League, whose teams develop elite college baseball players as well as their coaches, umpires and

front-office staff throughout the league. Over 185 players from the Northwoods League have gone on to play Major League Baseball, including three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, two-time World Series Champion Ben Zobrist and MLB All-Stars Chris Sale, Jordan Zimmermann and Curtis Granderson. Here at Wade Stadium, you might get a chance to catch the next rising star, as the best collegiate baseball players come from around the country to spend their summer playing for the Huskies and other Northwoods League teams. They are a hardworking group of players who hope they will be noticed by one of the many scouts that grace our ballpark on most nights.

Our many promotional nights and added food and beverage choices continue to be fan favorites. We enjoy being an active partner in the communities who support us and provide many non-profit groups the opportunity to present their programs within the friendly confines of Wade Stadium. We first introduced our Robotics night with just one high school and are now hosting 6 high school teams. From Every Monday Matters to Books and Baseball, and many other local causes, we have truly added something for everyone.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our host families, volunteers, sponsors, suppliers, staff and interns for all they do to make your experience here at historic Wade Stadium the best it can be. Please make sure you stop by one of our concession stands for great ballpark food and a wide variety of beverages to make your experience here complete. Please show your support for our advertisers and sponsors, as they help make this season possible.

GO HUSKIES !!!

By: Rachel HillsHuskies Video Production Intern

This season is the 15th year for the Huskies and it couldn’t be any more exciting. One of the biggest changes occurred with the coaching staff. Our new Field Manager (Head Coach) is Tyger Pederson, and he’s ready for a great summer of memorable baseball.

He has a long history with the sport starting back when he was a young boy playing tee ball. Tyger has fond memories of going to the field with his dad and brother to hit the ball. “My dad would pitch to us and then we would pick up the balls in our golf cart.”

Baseball definitely runs in the Pederson family. Tyger’s dad (Stu Pederson) played 13 years of Major League Baseball with the Dodgers. His brother Joc currently plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. With so many years of playing and being around the sport there certainly are a lot of great memories. One of Tyger’s favorites was seeing Joc hit a home run in the World Series. “That is a moment I will remember forever.”

Tyger played collegiately and was a captain at the University of the Pacific from 2010-2013. In his last year there he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the First-Year Player Draft.

He has coached for the MLB International Elite baseball camp in Taiwan, at Hawaii Pacific University, and most recently as an assistant coach for the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo, California. Last summer, he managed the Orange County Riptide to a California collegiate league championship in his first season there.

When asked why he wanted to coach he replied “I love the game and I want to help kids chase their dreams of playing professional baseball. I enjoy developing relationships with my players and like being able to be there for them on and off the field.” When asked what he thought was the most important thing about managing a team he said “having good players and surrounding yourself with a good staff who can help you develop. It’s the coaching staff, the front office and the players. The players need to have talent but also need to have a great work ethic.”

Passion, being a team player, and hard work are three things that describe Tyger not only as a coach but as a person. “All my life I have had to grind and work hard for opportunities in baseball both as a player and as a coach.” From a young age, his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic by encouraging him to outwork everyone else, and to never give up.

Being new to the Huskies, he is eager to coach a growing and very different team than last year. “Mike (owner), Greg (General Manager) and I have been

working around the clock to put a good product on the field. We have worked hard to recruit the best players in the country. I believe there is a lot of potential here and we are just starting to tap into it.”

When he was chosen as the head coach, he couldn’t wait to get to work, and is ready to take his new team to the next level. “I am extremely excited for the opportunity to manage the Duluth Huskies” Pederson said. “This summer we are going to compete in every game and

play the game the right way. I can’t wait to become part of the community here and bring Duluth an exciting ball club to support.” This season is going to be great and I’m already looking forward to many more.”

Huskies fans will be glad to know that Tyger plans to stay a while, and he hopes to wear the blue and white for a long time. “It can sometimes be a tough lifestyle, being away from family and friends for an extended period of time, but I still love it.”

Huskies fans should be ready for an exciting, out-of-this-world, and hard working 2018 Duluth Huskies season because the final message our new head coach has for you is…”get fired up for Huskies baseball. We’ll see y’all at the Wade!”

GETTING TO KNOW THE OWNER

By: Rachel HillsHuskies Video Production Intern

Born and raised in Duluth, Huskies owner Mike Rosenzweig has seen, played, and owned his fair share of baseball. The term “passion” doesn’t begin to describe his love for the game. Buying the Duluth Huskies back in 2011 was certainly a dream come true.

“We put some things on our bucket list, some achievable, some not.” This one became achievable once he heard the news that the Huskies were for sale. After four months of negotiating between the previous owner Bobby McCarthy, Mike’s attorneys and the Northwoods league’s attorneys, Mike was finally one of four new owners of the team. After several years, Mike became the sole owner.

His favorite part about owning the Huskies is not just about seeing the boys play but to see the smiles, great time and excitement in each baseball fan’s eyes young and old. “As a kid baseball is what we played in the summer and it was always fun.”

He is looking forward to this season for many reasons, but especially with the brand new, younger generation coaching staff that is taking the team in a different direction. He also believes that this

is “the best team the Duluth Huskies have put on this field since their inception in 2002.”

Mike loves the phrase “never give up, you always have a chance.” He has never given up on his love for baseball and feels fortunate to be able to have turned his passion for the game “into the greatest man cave around.”

Mike wants to say “thank you” to the fans for everything they do for this organization and team. You have all helped shape the Huskies into what we are today.

By: Rachel HillsHuskies Video Production Intern

A great head coach recruits a great coaching staff. Let me introduce you to the new Huskies hitting coach, Alex Simone.

Alex has been around the game from a very young age. His father and grandfather ran the Syracuse Chiefs, a Triple-A baseball team in the International league. “As a young kid I grew up at the ballpark. I fell in love with the game and knew I wanted to be a professional baseball player.”

I asked why he chose to specialize in hitting and he told me “I feel I can provide the most value to our players in my current role as a hitting coach. Along with training athletes physically, hitting is a passion of mine.”

He was first drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2010 MLB first-year player draft. He went to the University of West Alabama for his first two years of college and La Roche College for his last two years. “I always wanted to go to college and get my degree. I also wanted to be a professional baseball player. I knew I couldn’t play baseball forever so getting my education was important to me. West Alabama offered an Exercise Science major and I could also play baseball there. After two years I transferred to La Roche College in Pittsburgh where I got more playing time, and also got my degree.”

“There were coaches in my playing career that told me I wasn’t good enough to play at the high school, college, or professional level. I could have listened to them, but I refused to. I worked hard, overcame adversity, and proved everyone wrong. The most important thing is to realize is that if you want something badly enough you can go after it no matter what anyone says.”

His hard work is exactly how he got to be where he is today. When asked why he was interested in joining the Northwoods League, he mentioned how he truly wants to help athletes reach all of their goals. “The Northwoods is a fantastic league that I never got to be a part of when I played in college.” When asked what he is most excited for this season with the Huskies, Alex wants the guys “to work hard, improve their game and win!” He wants all of the Huskies fans to get ready for a fantastic summer! “Marcus, Tyger and I feel that we’ve put together a great team that’s going to compete for the Northwoods league championship!”

Along with staying busy as a coach, Alex also has his own company called Simone Baseball Performance. “I created this for every high school, college, and professional baseball player looking to reach their full athletic potential. I train athletes (specifically baseball and softball players) in person at the gym and I also coach athletes online via my remote training service.” He also posts free content daily on his social media platforms to help as many baseball and softball players as possible. Be sure to check out his social media:

Podcast: The Simone Baseball Performance Podcast

Alex has experienced a lot throughout his years of baseball. One of the most important things he’s learned is..“to never let the beliefs of others influence my career.”

WHY I BECAME A HUSKIE: AN INTERN’S STORY

By: Tanner HoopsHuskies Broadcasting Intern

Last fall, as a senior in college, I was counting down the days until I could join the sports industry as a professional. I attended a job fair at Target Field in September to find an organization looking for a sportscaster. It was there that I was introduced to representatives from the Duluth Huskies, who mentioned a potential internship opportunity for someone looking to break into the sports media business.

I never thought a post–graduation internship was an option for me, I always pictured myself landing something full-time within a year of my graduation. I wasn’t sure how affordable an internship after graduation could be. Nonetheless, I gave Duluth a call.

After talking with the front office, I realized how beneficial interning with the Huskies could be; I’d be gaining experience with

the premier summer collegiate league in America while working with other interns in similar situations and gaining new skills along the way. The front office made it clear to me from the beginning that they cared about helping me succeed not only with the Huskies but beyond my time in Duluth as well.

After I formally accepted the offer to intern with the Huskies, my mind was much more at ease when navigating potential full time job opportunities. The sports media industry is one full of “lifers” and plenty of qualified candidates. I found out just how difficult it was to burst on the scene professionally. Knowing I had an internship lined up in Duluth gave me peace of mind that I had opportunities unlike any I had before waiting for me.

My internship has given me hope and optimism for the future. I know that I am cared about personally and professionally here. This is where big league dreams are born and not just for the athletes.

We’re tapping into the power of rivers in Minnesota and the wind that sweeps across the plains to provide clean, carbon-free electricity. GETTING TO KNOW THE G.M.

By: Rachel HillsHuskies Video Production Intern

Is there a certain image or person that comes to mind when you think of a baseball general manager? For me that person is Greg Culver, the General Manager of the Duluth Huskies. He is by far one of the most energetic, baseball loving guys that any Huskies fan could say they know.

Greg credits his father for his love of baseball. Some of his memories as a little boy include going out in the backyard, with his dad pitching the ball to him or playing catch. Thinking back to his youth he wants to give young baseball players just starting out this advice: “When I was a player I thought I knew it all. Always listen and respect your coaches, teammates and opponents.”

At any given Duluth community event (sports related or not) Greg is often there representing the Huskies and enjoying it. I sat down to talk with him about his career and what to look forward to this season.

This is Greg’s fourth summer with the Huskies overall and second summer as the General Manager. Prior to that he was in charge of corporate sales and stadium operations. He was originally hired for his position due to his 24 years experience with the Duluth News Tribune in advertising. “After about a month of being here the GM at the time had resigned and the owner asked if I was interested in the position. I put my name in the hat and the final decision was made at the end of the season.”

He mentions how there are many ups and downs in being the GM… one of the hardest parts is making sure everything in the off season gets done so that the season runs as smoothly as possible. For the fans the season is only a few months long, but for Greg (who lives and breathes Huskies baseball) it’s a year-round job.

He wears many hats as the General Manager, making sure all of the game day operations run smoothly. This includes the production booth, streaming broadcast, events and promotions, happy fans, etc.), He also makes sure the players and coaches are ready to play, and that the Wade itself is ready for another summer of games.

This year the organization is different both on and off the field. In addition to the new coaching staff, Greg has developed an extensive internship program, which gives college students wanting to work in the field of professional sports a tremendous amount of hands on experience.

When talking about the Huskies and the Northwoods League, Greg believes we are in the best league in the US. It’s been a year of change, and “we’re going to give it a heck of a run for the championship.”
