Healthy bones are not just a concern for the very young or very old, says Emily Casey, MD, primary care physician/sports medicine specialist with Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center at St. Vin- cent’s One Nineteen. Some of Casey’s 20-some- thing patients suffer from arthri- tis--due to obesity. “The first thing anyone should know is that you build bones through a well-balanced diet and exercise. Parents should provide healthy meals and snacks. Exercise is impor- tant, too. Bones and muscles need to be active. Weak muscles, combined with heavy weight, negatively affect joints and bones.” Elders should also be active. Those with histories of fractures or at risk for osteoporosis may not only need physician-recom- mended DEXA (bone density) scans and Vitamin D/calcium- level checks, but weight-bearing exercise, too. “Studies show that weight- bearing exercise increases bone density at any age,” says One Nineteen Lead Physical Thera- pist Kaye Sharp. “As you age, your bone density and muscle mass decrease. Weight-bearing exercise helps prevent that, and helps reduce risk for fractures and falls, because you’re build- ing balance and flexibility.” Weight-bearing opportunities at One Nineteen’s fitness center include weights, machines, and classes, from Zumba to kickbox- ing. Families might also jump rope, climb stairs, run, hike, or walk, Sharp says, for 20 to 30 minutes, two to three times a week, to build bone health. “Vitamin D and calcium are also important,” says Casey. That’s why One Nineteen Registered Dietitian Donna Sibley suggests parents drink milk with their children. “Even chocolate milk is a great source, and if you’re worried about the sugar, you can dilute it with one percent or skim milk.” Parents should also monitor teens’ diets. Without proper calcium, phosphoric acid (in colas), caffeine, excess protein, and sodium can harm bones. Sibley suggests snacks and desserts of yogurts, puddings, and cheese-fruit plates. “Green leafy vegetables have some cal- cium too, although not nearly as high as dairy, calcium-fortified soy milk, or calcium-fortified orange juice.” Since calcium absorption is dependent on Vitamin D, Sibley urges everyone to get about 10 minutes of sunshine a day. “That is the best way for the body to make D.” A multivitamin can supplement sunshine dur- ing winter’s short days. Bone-saving injury prevention is important too, Casey says. “Wear properly-fitted helmets, mouth pieces, and appropriate pads for your sport. Know game rules and proper techniques, such as tackling in football and tumbling in gymnastics.
