There was a time when I decorated myhouse in floral prints. I reupholstered anoverstuffed armchair in Laura Ashley roseand draped a bedspread with a zinneastripe. The feeling was upbeat and happy. Then I discovered creams and taupe and myhome went from upbeat to soothing. Today,I enjoy an eclectic mix of colors and styles. This issue also features a mix of colors andstyles. On page 28, Honolulu residents Maryand Peter Steiner decorated their secondhome in the East Bay in beiges and creamsas a pleasant contrast to vibrant Hawaiianhues. We also see the reincarnation of 18thcentury toile (page 34) from staid toclassically hip.

    Enjoy the issue.

Take a rustic storefront built in 1937, locate it incongruously inswank Menlo Park and fill it with charming home items both vintageand just plain pretty (many are made of recycled materials). Then offerpersonal shopping services, plant- and patioscaping and customizedgift baskets. There youve got Menloville, an eclectic countryshoppe in the words of owner Lisa Lovazzano. The diversity doesntstop there. Merchandise includes the luxury beauty line Lollia andelegant pewter pieces by Arte Italica. Good thing the floor space iscompact, given the dizzying assortment of art pieces, furniture, jewelryand other knickknacks to admire. Make sure you also take time toindulge at the full coffee bar, although our highest recommendation isthe tart frozen yogurt, a MenloVille specialty. It is well worth drivingout of your way for.

Rockridge has emerged as a hub for all things quaint and traditional, which makes Form Vintage Modern one audacious (and adored)boutique. Its concept masterminded by husband and wife ownersJoe and Lindsay Kunis blurs the line between new and old, conservative and cutting edge by showcasing an international coterie oficonic designers and rare vintage finds from the recent past (at Form, vintage translates as practically in mint condition or masterfullyrefurbished to look good as new). The savvy, down-to-earth couple hasan eye for sleek lines, steely textures and all things mid-century,stocking both Vintage Danish dcor and contemporary Americandesign, including such brands as Alessi, Vitra, Tonelli and Vancouver-based Bombast (think luxe upholstered seating).

  • Ross are kind of like the mood ringof wines. The range of color pink, pinker, pinkerer is all over the map(somewhat literally), and the style can beanything from a serious pour to almostfrivolous. And this time of year, with thewarm weathers torpor unabated, you canliven things up when you drink pink.

Ros reaches its pinnacle with wines ofProvence, Tavel and some regions in Spain, but American wines are doing some nicethings in the less serious spectrum. BonnyDoons Vin Gris de Cigares Grenache-based blend ($15) is fresh and zesty, withpalate tones of blood orange. Palis SunsetRos ($15) is a tad more floral, withcranberry and lime tones. Pietra SantasRosato, from the Cienega Valley, is 100percent Dolcetto, fresh, vibrant and full ofcharacter. Navarros Ros ($16.50)continues this houses quirky but stylish repwith a Grenache/Carignan blend that islight and crisp with a hint of spice.

My favorite ros of this summer is the

downright cheap Paul Jaboulet AineParallele 45 ($8 less at the big boxstores), a Grenache/Syrah blend from theCote du Rhone. Its dark garnet color isinviting, with a payoff of plum and blackcurrant. This is as fine as an aperitif as it is an accompaniment for grilled sausageor pork.

Here are a few more rewarding ways tothink pink this season: Robert Skalli Reserve AOC Cotes deProvence ($20): Deceptively bright pink, but pleasantly tart, tasting of red currantand white peach. Pair it with almost anygrilled fish and grilled or stuffed vegetables. Maison Bouachon Tavel La Rouvier($17): From Chateauneuf de Pape in thetraditional style, a medley of stone fruit withan almond-like finish. Grilled salmon ismade to order here. Navarra Red Guitar Old Vine ($10): A simple quaffer from Spain in the lighter cherry/raspberry vein. Wean your holdout white-zin friends with this fairly

perfumed pour. One more word about ros: Thoughcounterintuitive, the darker the wine, notnecessarily the drier the style. Many of thenearly reds are quite sweet and, to my mind,to be avoided.

New and Recommended:Joseph Phelps Sauvignon Blanc 2007,$32: This may be the new benchmark insauvignon creamy, slightly floral andfocused but true to type. If you everneeded convincing on this varietal, this isthe wine to do it. Grade: AOrfila Vineyards Viognier Lotus Lot 67,$29: From, of all places, San Diego County,a Viognier/Marsanne/Roussanne blend withboth backbone and finesse. Grade: A-Vale do Bomfim 2006, $12: The house ofDow makes this zippy dry red for PortugalsDouro Valley, but it is not at all a port style. It has an easy elegance, but with bright fruitand spicy aromas. Perfect for the grill.Grade: B

Experts say there are tricks to growing gardenias as a houseplant or in the garden. But thetruth is, this plant either likes you or hates you. If it hates you in that you never get anyof those gorgeously fragrant flowers just toss it in the compost pile and go back to a morefriendly rose or tomato. And if it likes you? Then oh, my, enjoy this beautifully lush bushwith shiny leaves and creamy blooms that go from spring through summer. So, the questionis: How can you become BFF with a gardenia?

Outdoors, admittedly, this plant is finicky. It needs consistently mild temperatures andcant tolerate freezing, although a light frost is bearable (protect it when frost is predicted). When first planted, water every day to keep the roots moist but not sopping wet. Once it isestablished, water every three days without fail. Acid soil is a must. Use a planting mix andfertilizer that is formulated for azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. During the bloomingseason, starting in late spring, fertilize every three weeks. A sunny spot with some shade isideal. A gardenia can be planted in fall or spring; the best results come with a well-startedplant in a three-or five-gallon container. As for those tiny gift plants found among the cut-flower displays, enjoy them as houseplants, then try them outdoors. If the gardenias likeyou, all is well.

Model ofexe l lenceRefurnishing amodel home from top to bottom in record time

By Joan Chatfield-TaylorPhotography by Douglas Johnson

Most interior decorating processes are litanies ofdelays the desired damask wont arrive fromFrance for six months, the perfect tiles arent instock and last-minute changes of heart. This, on the otherhand, is a decorating story of speed and efficiency.

A couple of years ago, Honolulu residents Mary and PeterSteiner were spending a few days with friends in Pleasanton. One afternoon they decided to visit model homes in theluxury developments springing up in the area. I fell in lovewith one of the models, Mary recalls. She and her husbandwasted no time. They made an offer and soon foundthemselves with the keys to a dignified, spacious residence.

Im from California, and I have friends here. I used to livein Foster City and Redwood Shores before I moved to Hawaiiand met my husband there. So I wanted to have a base inCalifornia, and I really like Pleasanton. The Steiners movearound a fair amount, dividing their time between theirbeachside house on Oahu and another house in Vancouver, but Mary Steiner looks forward to spending more time inPleasanton. Maybe it will be a permanent residence, eventually. In the meantime I want to use it.

When they took over the property, the lavish furnishings ofthe carefully staged model home were gone. Although therewere a few remnants of the splendor some wall-to-wallcarpet, some paintings and window coverings there wasnt

a chair to sit on. They needed to do something, and theywanted to do it fast. Im not good at waiting, MarySteiner confesses. Weve had several places, and I havea tendency to dig right in and get it decorated.

They were off to J. Hettinger, a large furniture andinterior design store in Danville. Do you have anychairs? they asked Robineve Cole, one of Hettingersinterior designers. Then they glimpsed what MarySteiner described as the perfect sofa. One thing led toanother, Cole started showing them more things, andthey were off and running on a high-speed process totransform and personalize the new house as quickly aspossible. Within a month lightning fast in the normal

pace of decorating three areas of the house werecomfortably furnished and the rest of the house, guesthouse and pool house were underway.

It helped that Mary Steiner had picked out a singlecolor scheme that would be continued, in subtlevariations, throughout the entire house. Her choice wasa soft blue combined with a palette of browns, rangingfrom rich dark chocolate to muted taupes to warmbeige. The quiet colors seem to flow naturally from thetaupe stucco on the exterior of the house.

The repetition of a single palette of colors might seemto be a formula for monotony, but Robineve Cole hasgiven each room in the house a distinct personality,

thanks to her use of textures. Cole, a former textile designer whospent some years running her own fashion manufacturing line, used fabrics from silk damasks and satins to sturdy cottons andadded trimmings like deep fringe or sparkling crystals to define therelative formality of each area. Mary Steiner recalls, We workedreally well together. She showed me a lot of fabrics, and Im prettygood at making decisions.

One of the quirks of the house is the little library right off theliving room. Although it was going to serve as Peter Steinersworking office, his wife didnt want the rooms function to beclearly visible, nor did she want to curtain it off. I didnt want allthose things shredders, printers, cords and so forth out whereyou could see them. The office mechanics are now built in behinddark, glossy paneling, without an errant cord to be seen. The effect

  • is so sleek, says Mary Steiner, My husband was a little taken aback. He said it felt like the Presidentof the United States should be there.

Not only did the Steiners want the house decorated fast, they wanted a complete turnkey job, sothat they could walk in and have everything from sheets and towels to soap dishes and napkins inplace. Cole went to work, helping them select blue and white china and cut-crystal glasses. Sheravaged Macys linen department, buying so much at one time that it took three dollies to move it allout to a truck. The attention to every detail turned out to be a lucky break, when Mary Steiner took afall and had to spend a month convalescing at the new house. Shelves were stocked with tissues, thesoap was in the bathrooms and all the smallest comforts of home were in place, just in time.

icture-perfectThough the French chopped off Marie Antoinetteshead in 1793, they never stopped sharing herfondness for the story-telling cottons known as toilede Jouy. Today, more than 200 years later, thefabrics appeal is stronger than ever.

Y ou might call toile a picture-perfect fabric, says San Francisco-based designerStephen Shubel. For something with that much punch, its tremendously versatilebecause its a one-color print on a white or cream ground. Even one or two chairscovered in toile can add life to a traditional room. On the other hand, you can use toilethroughout a space without overwhelming it.

Shubel owns a house in France and says his fondness for toile is probably fueled by thetime he spends there. In France, you see toile used in abundance, even in fine hotels, hesays. One reason is that the fabric is so quintessentially French; another is that it creates awelcoming mood. Shubel remembers one project where he covered the clients headboard, chairs, a screen, storage boxes and even the wifes pumps in toile.

Intriguing beginningsToile pronounced twal is a French word for cloth, and Jouy is for Jouy-en-Josas, a

village southeast of Paris near Versailles, where French royalty and their courtiers were busyspending money in the 1700s. Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf started a textile factory inJouy-en-Josas, initially making very fine floral designs using wood blocks that were appliedto the fabric by hand. The designs were small and the printing process was time-consumingso that only royalty and the wealthy could afford the textiles.

In 1752, an Irishman named Francis Nixon started etching designs onto copperplaterollers and producing the large, detailed patterns now associated with toile from Dublin. His method was more cost-efficient than the French wood blocks, and toile became a hugesuccess in Great Britain. In a daring attempt at industrial espionage, however, theOberkampfs stole Nixons invention, writing the instructions in invisible ink to smuggleacross the English Channel. That information helped to escalate the Oberkampfs business.

At its peak, 1,500 workers produced nearly 5,500yards of fabric daily, and in 1783, King Louis XVIbestowed a royal supplier status on theOberkampf family.

Storied patternsEarly toiles depicted an idyllic country life:

shepherds and milkmaids tending their flocks inbucolic meadows; peasants bringing in theharvest; and nobility picnicking or hunting. Suchscenes of country life delighted Marie Antoinette, who used an abundance of toile at Petite Trianon, her private palace at Versailles. Hot-air balloonsalso interested Marie Antoinette, and thesebecame a pattern as well. Other popular motifsincluded Roman and Greek mythology, ships, flowers, buildings and scenes of the Orient. BothFrench and English wallpaper manufacturerscapitalized on the popularity of the fabric, andsoon designers were coordinating toile wallpaperand textiles.

History personifiedThe American Revolution added more patterns

to the selection. Europeans were fascinated withfamous Americans like John Adams, Ben Franklin

and George Washington and used their images tocreate toiles. By the 1820s, the United States wasproducing its own fabrics. In 1940, inspired bythe movie Gone With the Wind, manufacturersprinted romantic Southern-style toiles. EvenMamie Eisenhower commissioned a design tohonor her husband Ikes achievements during hispresidency. It was produced in three colors, andshe chose the red-on-cream for a dress for herself.

Tweaking traditionWhile most designers consider toile a traditional

decorating element, with patterns fromBrunschwig & Fils, Cowtan & Tout, ManuelCanovas, Scalamandre, Thibaut and Waverly, contemporary designs are also increasing inpopularity. Companies like Studio Printworksproduce beach scenes and scenes of U.S. cities(i.e., San Francisco, Tampa, Chicago). And, ofcourse, digital technology now makes it possiblefor companies like Dream Scape to take photos ofyour eight-year-old on the soccer field or fromyour wedding and create a personalized toile.

Its no wonder toile is timeless. S

A s group director of Tiffany & Companyin San Jose, Calif., Brian Neel knows asmuch about planning parties as he doesdiamonds. After all, successful soirees and agirls best friend have a lot in common. Bothinvolve precision, beauty and enjoyment. Hereare a few of his secrets to organizing the perfectget-together.

n The first thing you need to think of is thecomfort of your guests. Whos sitting next towhom, are there any food allergies, how does thetable look, how will the meal be served, how willit be presented, how will it be cleared, how youllmove through each course these need to bethought of and planned out before you sit down. The last thing you need is to interrupt theconversation and have some logistical error thatyou have to stop the party and fix.

n Start with a reception in a different roomand then move into the dining room. Thisensures you have better timing for the meal. Itgives your guests time to arrive and to get toknow each other. Let them mingle in the livingroom or any type of reception area in yourhouse. The cocktail hour is very importantbecause you can gather before you sit down, have a drink and break the ice.

n When youre doing your table seatingarrangement, think about whos sitting next towhom. Is there history there? Is there not historythere? Do you want history to be there?

n Themes set the tone of the party. Guestsknow what to expect. It works both ways, too. Ifthey know each other they can really get into thetheme; if they dont, it gives them something tobond over and talk about immediately.
