Through the ages stories have always been the best the way to communicate; from fairy tales to today’s news and TED Talks, every day we hear stories. As a marketing guy I was always thinking of how could I make my clients’ stories (and my own), better and more convin-cing. One day I stumbled upon a book by Daniel Pink that explained there’s a basic structure in every strong story that successful storytellers use: ‘The Pixar-Pitch’. By using that structure I became better at conveying my message and it changed my life and my business. Because of that, my stories and messages were shared more often and some even went ‘viral’. Now I craft my messages and my clients’ in this way to make them resonate better with our audiences. The structure of this story is actually the same that Pixar Studios uses to tell their stories:

Our mind processes and reproduces information better when it is presented in a structured way. Six sentences is the maximum we are willing to listen/read and causality represents common logic and makes it easier to convince.

Try it for yourself! Share your stories with Erik Scarcia: twitter.com/Donscarcia

You can often find him working at Spaces Zuidas (Barbara Strozzilaan 101-201 Amsterdam) or sometimes at Spaces Herengracht (Herengracht 124-128 Amsterdam).

The book that inspired Erik is by Daniel H. Pink: ‘To Sell is Human’.

For this edition’s Personal Service, we would like

to introduce you to our general manager Nina

Verrijt. Now working at Spaces Zuidas but soon

to be the general manager of Spaces Vijzelstraat.

What we consider to be the coolest job in town...

Marlon Huysmans, a building engineer, has

always had an entrepreneurial soul. At 37 she

owns a consulting firm. For her, life and work

are all about change. This is the reason why she

decided to work at Spaces, “a company which

is a role model of pure thinking”. With little time

to network, Spaces gives her the opportunity to

meet other working nomads like Kristian Esser,

who owns Social Media Agency Mr Harder. He

can be regularly heard as a guest expert at BNR

radio. Both agree that without Spaces this

collaboration would have never had happened.

Marlon and Kristian met while working at Spaces Zuidas. For over a year, they worked on their own, sitting in the same room without really interacting or knowing much about the other’s work but as Marlon says “I noticed he was working hard, quietly and focused, just like I was”. They struck up a conversation and Marlon found out that Kristian was a Social Media expert, so the next day she asked him for some professional advice. He gave her such sound tips and excellent ideas that Marlon decided to split the fee for the job with him. The interaction between the two was so productive that they started working together more often. They have different projects planned for the near future. For example; BNP Paribas Real Estate wants to focus on connecting building tenants and owners/investors with use of technology from a human point of view.

SPACE EXPEDITION CORPORATION IS ONE OF SPACES ZUIDAS’ NEWEST TENANTSSpace Expedition Corporation (SXC) literally reaches for the stars. SXC is currently organising

their first test flights with the XCOR Lynx spacecraft. They offer daily commercial flights into

space as of 2014 on the XCOR Aerospace’s Lynx suborbital reusable launch vehicle.

Celebrating the new office, SXC exhibits its full scale prototype SP1 right in front of our Zuidas

building this month. Of course we couldn’t let the opportunity pass by to ask a real entrepeneur,

SXC’s CEO Michiel Mol, his views on work and why he choose Spaces as its HQ.

Personal service PIXAR-PITCHDid you know that Pixar Studios always uses a certain formula to tell their stories? And most

importantly, did you know that you can use that same structure in your business? Spaces member

and marketing strategist Erik Scarcia of Comsigliere tells us how he changed his clients’ and his own

business by pitching the “Pixar way”.

TO WORK.

Nina is always willing to go the extra mile, committed to help you out, always up for a joke, but above all a strong and warm personality. Not afraid to use a power drill when needed, and not shying away from the spotlight either. Nina fits perfectly within the dynamic and energetic environ-ment of the Vijzelstraat. She lives by some golden rules: eat like a queen, box like a king and party like a princess. This combination keeps her fit for the job. And throwing strikes on the bowling alley!

For now the building is still a work in progress, but after the summer you can meet Nina every day at the Vijzelstraat.

Michiel Mol: “Our previous office in Amsterdam Zuid was beautiful, but we missed the presence of other young enterprises around us. That’s why I believe in concepts such as Spaces. What’s more, we share one passion: commercial space…”

Marlon’s demanding job and active personal life does not leave much room for her to network, “I like the fact that members of Spaces do their own thing and they do not network in a tradi-tional way”. According to both Kristian and Marlon, this partner-ship would not have happened without Spaces as they do not have much professional ground in common. They think Spaces is the perfect place to work and meet. In addition, Marlon enjoys talking to new people and the ‘unexpected’ factor of what these new conversations can bring to the table. She refers to the café deli as the perfect place to meet and interact. She would love to know more about the projects that other members are working on and are ‘proud of’, not only successful business stories but also ‘beautiful failures’, as she calls them, that help her learn.

Marlon does not rule out working with other members in the future and she encourages other members interested in data revolution for buildings (what Kristian and herself call ‘domoti-ca heaven’) to talk to them. They are always open for new ideas and fruitful collaboration with other members of Spaces, so let’s meet and work.

Get in touch with Kristian Esser, Mr Harder www.mrhar-derblog.com or Marlon Huysman www.mhprojects.com. Or meet them in person and see them at work at Spaces Zuidas, Barbara Strozzilaan 101-201 Amsterdam.

The Great Game is a member at the Heren-

gracht and had the amazing task of guiding

and training the students of the TU Delft on

their road to success at the Solar Car Chal-

lenge in Australia.

Who better to explain how the Great Game improved their group dynamics than having the leader of the Solar Car Team Marlies Hak do the talking: “The Great Game of Business helped us in becoming a better team and increasing our work-flow. They gave us a very specialised training; first we had to identify our strenghts and weaknesses as a team from a

management perspective. Then we made up a division of tasks within the management team. After that we really got into the Great Game training with which we ascertained our Critical Number. Of course that was number one! At the final stage, the Great Game team together with Rini van Solingen taught us the principles of SCRUM. We applied this unique method of teamwork and management style in Australia and we had the perfect preparation.”

And of course, the winner of The World Solar Challenge 2013 was the team of the TU Delft!

For our very first Spaces

Showcase at Spaces

Herengracht we proudly

present the work of Alexandra

Hunts. We asked this young

photographer about the

inspiration for her work.

“In my work I try to understand what photography is and to see how photogra-phy can go beyond its definition. I am like a sculptor or installation artist who uses photography as a tool. The medium of photography allows me to create new connections between forms of communication and expression of the self. Many of my projects deal with the landscape, or how landscape should be understood today. I try to explore phil-osophical questions on the nature and contemporary practice of photography. My fascination for nature came uncon-sciously in mychildhood in the infinite

forests and fields of Ukraine, and later in the Netherlands, where nature is completely manipulated and controlled by the human.

Friction between nature and culture has also intrigued me for several years. I am charmed by the fight between the human interpretation, perception, and experience of the surroundings and the reality itself, and by the role of art in this fight. Photography allows me to create my own reality which is based on the real world.”

Spaces Showcase opened on Friday 7th of February with an artist talk hosted by Annegret Kellner, Assistant Curator of KRC Capital Art Collection. The collection of Alexandra will be on display till end of March at Spaces Herengracht.

Come and view her work at Heren-gracht 124-128 Amsterdam (open for visitors). Or visit Alexandra’s website www.alexandrahunts.com

A few years ago, one of our favorite publishers, Gestalten, published a book by the name Once In A Lifetime, which is basically the best travel / hotel / leisure / getaway book ever. It covers those beautiful extraordinary destinations, eco-friendly resorts, tree houses, but also trains trailers and boats. Oasis is Once In A Lifetime's little sister, which focuses on baths, spas, retreats. Or as Gestalten puts it: getaways that serve not only to cater your personal well-being, but also push

the boundaries of hospitality, interior design and architecture. In a nutshell: those places you'd much rather like to be than the place that you are now (no matter how much you like working at Spaces).

Oasis can be purchased at Spaces Herengracht, Spaces Den Haag and online at: www.mendo.nl/books/oasis

We asked Daniël Kooij, Marketing Manager of

New Venture to tell us a bit more about how

they stimulate entrepreneurship. He gets his

inspiration from successful entrepreneurs and

loves online marketing. You can contact him at

[email protected] .

Start-up companies are the embodiment of creativity and drive. Without their innovation and entrepreneurship, our economic and social prosperity is difficult to sustain. With that in mind, the New Venture programme was launched more than 15 years ago to help start-ups flourish.

So how to stimulate Dutch creativity today? People are challenged to translate their idea into an achievable business plan. Supported by coaches and experienced consultants from established companies, New Venture has proven to be a catalyst for people with innovative ideas. Previous successes from the

initiative include the world-famous Senz° storm-proof umbrella and the fast growing car sharing platform, SnappCar. Connec-ting start-ups with established companies is a win-win situation.

We believe that creating a unique environment will encourage entrepreneurial spirit: a belief we share with Spaces. In January, New Venture became a new tenant of Spaces Zuidas. If you want to find out more, check www.newventure.nl.
