A mellow, rustic and fleshy southern Spanish

red mostly made from the indigenous

bobal grape with 10% each tempranillo and

sometimes fierce heat of this Mediterranean

2014

This full-bodied red, new to The Society,

is made by the Candela family who have

been making wine in Yecla, a region inland

of Alicante, since 1925. It is a fragrant and

succulent monastrell with spicy blueberry

Salvaje del Moncayo Garnacha 2014

This lightly structured, vividly fruity garnacha

is a joy to drink. High-altitude vineyards in

the Moncayo mountains in Aragon produce a

refreshing style of garnacha with soft tannins.

Viña Zorzal Graciano, Navarra 2013

With perfumed fruit, a chunky palate and

delicious savoury flavours, this makes a good

RIOJA: ‘THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO BUY’

For centuries Rioja has been the home of Spain’s finest reds. It’s had its ups and downs over the years but today its star is very much

in the ascendant with a wave of ambition sweeping through the region. With the arrival of two new reserva vintages (2009 and 2010),

both outstanding, an improvement in winemaking (particularly the more judicious use of oak) and the arrival of younger winemakers

obsessed with innovation, there has never been a better time to buy Rioja.

Here we bring you the wines that performed best in our tastings this year, from traditionalists like López de Heredia and La Rioja Alta,

to contemporary, ground-breaking styles crafted to reflect single vineyards and estates, such as Contino and Remelluri. Rioja is now

available in several guises, so once again this year we include our ‘style guide’ to help members make the most appropriate choice.

RIOJA STYLE GUIDE

These are exciting times for Rioja buyers.

For many years Spain’s pre-eminent wine

region has been a byword for traditional

winemaking. In recent times, however, a

new generation of winegrowers has been

challenging the old ways. As a result three

distinct styles have emerged:

Traditional (T): fragrant, silky wines

from long ageing in cask (usually American

oak) and bottle, generally ready to drink

on release.

Modern-classical (MC): younger,

rounder wines that retain the delicious

character of Rioja through cask ageing

(often a mix of American and French oak)

with the structure to develop in bottle.

Modern (M): richer, velvety wines, aged

for less time in newer (usually) French oak,

designed to keep and improve in bottle.

The Society’s Rioja Crianza 2011

Gentle, round and smooth Rioja, carefully

barrel aged in American oak for just under

two years, we blend this specially to reflect

the good old-fashioned style of Rioja. Such

is the careful ageing process this wine has

undergone it could legally qualify to be

labelled as a ‘reserva’. A great buy therefore.

An exceptional traditionally framed gran

reserva from grapes sourced from the

Muga family’s highest-altitude vineyards.

in flavour with a fleshy, soft palate backed

by fine, grainy tannins and wonderful

Olivo is released early, only made in the best

vintages and is very serious indeed. Scented,

La Rioja Alta is one of the most resolutely traditional of the region’s bodegas. It was founded in 1890 by a consortium of five families,

including the Aranas, Ardanzas and the Alberdis (names immortalised as reservas), and now commands an impressive vineyard

portfolio of over 700ha. The bodega excels in classically styled reservas and gran reservas which are given considerable cask ageing.

What sets this bodega apart from other traditionalists is that the wines succeed in retaining striking vigour and fruit after undergoing

their lengthy period in cask. They are released for sale only when fully ready to drink and always have an air of graceful maturity

about them. In recognition of their 125th birthday this year, we feature eight wines from their portfolio, including some mature

examples that are at their peak now.

Made in the traditional style (aged for five

years before release), this is elegant, cedary

and silky and shows the vibrancy and charm

From 95% tempranillo and 5% mazuelo,

perfectly balanced and leathery. La Rioja

Alta made no gran reserva in 2006, so Arana

benefited from the finest selection of fruit.

Mostly tempranillo with 25% garnacha, the

2005 is spicy, stylish and complex with the

elegance and length of flavour one expects

Duero 2010

One of Ribera’s great estates, Pedrosa’s

vineyards benefit from high altitude. The 2010

reserva is spicy, leathery and round, showing

Big, savoury blockbuster made by Mariano

This is a top vintage for Valbuena and the first

to be made at Vega Sicilia’s new winemaking

Spain has more than 70 wine regions

and hundreds of local grapes. Here we

unearth three esoteric, off-the-beaten

track reds: authentically crafted and

wild in flavour, these will satisfy the most

adventurous palates.

If sales are anything to go by, the whistle-clean flavours of Spain’s ‘new’ whites have captured members’ imaginations. Most of

the mencía grape in Ribeira Sacra, a cooler

at an altitude of 900–1,200 metres in an

ancient DO called Cebreros near Madrid.

The region’s wines were once used as an

with intense mineral, blueberry aromas and

Ermita del Conde Albillo, Vino de la

Tierra de Castilla y León 2013

Albillo is a minor variety in Spain having

been largely ignored by growers. This is

a rare example of its potential from a

100-year-old vineyard on the border of

Ribera del Duero. Broadly textured with

white fruit and lightly spicy, oaky flavour.

Harmonious, savoury white, aged in barrel,

which is the benchmark for white Rioja

made in the old-fashioned style. Subtle,

nutty and tangy yet intense with a creamy,

Classy, refined and pure albariño from

Gerardo Mendez who is widely admired

in Spain as the master of this Galician

Abel Mendoza Viura, Rioja 2014

Unknown here yet legendary in Rioja,

grower Abel Mendoza is producing some

of the region’s finest whites. This creamy,

mineral viura, aged for just five months

in barrel, is wonderfully round and soft.

A different take on albariño which is aged

on its lees for nearly three years, then

spends another three in bottle before

being released. Round, biscuity, rich, almost

Burgundian. The 2007 is highly perfumed

and intense with a beautiful structure and

length of flavour. Now to 2019. 13%

This is made by Sumarroca, a small family

estate in Penedès, who use the traditional

cava grapes (parellada, macabeo and xarel-

lo) plus a touch of chardonnay to add

finesse. Fragrant, appley Spanish fizz with
