I. UNC-UNDERGRADUATE BULLETING DESCRIPTION OF SPANISH 105 105 Spanish for High Beginners (4). Accelerated course that covers SPAN 101 and 102 for students with previous study of

Spanish. Aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.

II. WHO CAN TAKE THIS COURSE?SPAN105-SPANISH FOR HIGH BEGINNERS (4) is a four-credit course that is offered to students with previous study of Spanish. It is a pre-requisite for SPAN203-Intermediate Spanish I (3). Upon completion of this course students can continue into SPAN 203-Intemediate Spanish I. The requirements are that a student has had at least 2 years of high school Spanish and placed into SPAN105 in the Spanish Placement Exam.

IMPORTANT NOTE:Students are not permitted to drop levels 1 through 3 of Foundations courses in a foreign language, at any time during the semester, unless approved by a dean in the Academic Advising Program. (p. 378 Undergraduate Bulletin)

III. COURSE GOALS AND KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

SPAN105-SPANISH FOR HIGH BEGINNERS is a course designed for those students with some previous knowledge of Spanish. The ultimate goal is to lead students successfully toward the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview level of narrating in the major time frames (Novice-High). The main objective of the course is to review and expand on the material that students learned in previous institutions. There are four main areas that the students should achieve at the end of the term: comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. At the end of the term a student of SPAN105 should be able to understand, write, read, and speak in the present, the past, simple future, and give advice. SPAN105 students should be able to introduce themselves and their families, order at a restaurant, go shopping, attend musical/artistic events, create personal travel plans, go to the doctor, and talk about important issues like the environment.

Final Grades will be determined according to the following scale:

All grades will be posted in Sakai’s Grade book as they are completed. Be sure to keep all returned graded work until you receive your final grade.

3. ABSENCES:

After THREE unexcused absences during the semester, 1 percentage point will be subtracted from the student's final participation grade for each additional absence. Attendance will be taken daily. Three late arrivals constitute 1 absence. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed so that you come prepared on the day that you do return to class. If your absence is excused, you must inform your instructor immediately upon return and bring appropriate documentation to prove it. RECOMMENDATION: Set two alarms, especially on exam days.

4. WEEKLY PREPARATION / PARTICIPATION GRADE: (10%)

A. SPAN105 Assessment Requirement—MANDATORY: Bring your computer to class on the first day.All SPAN105 students must complete a SPAN105 Assessment the first day of class. This assessment is designed to evaluate how much Spanish 105 material you know.

B. Course Contract QuestionnaireOn the first day of class, you instructor will show you or give you a questionnaire about the SPAN105 Course Contract. This questionnaire is due on WEDNESDAY AUGUST 26 in Sakai (you will complete it in Sakai under the link “Tests & Quizzes.”

C. General ParticipationYou will receive 3 official participation grades. After each midterm and prior to the final exam. These participation grades will reflect your participation in class. a. Weekly Participation Self Evaluation (See attached document under Syllabus link in Sakai). Your instructor will ask you

at the end of class for your Participation Self Evaluation. Your instructor will review the weekly participation grade and return it with feedback.

b. Participation Rubric (See attached document under Syllabus link in Sakai) Your participation grade reflects your preparation for class and your active participation in class. Please study the pages assigned for the day before class so that you can answer questions and participate in all activities. Active participation means always speaking Spanish in the classroom, not using English, contributing significantly to group work, volunteering as much as possible without dominating the class, and not missing class. Not using any electronic devices unless instructed. Absolutely no mobile phones.

5. MSL: MYSPANISH LAB—ONLINE HOMEWORK (10%)This course has an online component. It is worth 10% of the grade. All assignments are pre-programmed in MSL—myspanishlab. All exercises are due by 8:00 A.M. (MWF). You have up to 5 attempts to complete them before they are due. http://pearsoncustom.com/nc/unc_spanish

6. MINI-COMPOSITIONS IN CLASS (10%)During the semester you will be asked to complete a short mini in-class assignment for a grade at the beginning of class. These 5 minutes assignments are mini-writing exercises. These exercises are unannounced. Recommendation: Every day practice timing yourself listening to a MSL activity, practice conjugating verbs, learning vocabulary with the proper article, so that you will be able to write 6-8 sentences in 5-7 min. NO MAKE UPS. MAKE SURE YOU COME TO CLASS ON TIME.

7. EXAMS: (10%; 15 %)a. There will be TWO 50 minutes exams covering the materials covered up to each exam. Each exam is divided into two parts:

a. Part I—LISTENING SECTION. Given the day prior to the exam during the last 10-15 minutes of class.b. Part II—WRITTEN SECTION. It takes 50 minutes.

b. Study Guidesa. You can find the Study Guides under the link “Lesson” in Sakai.

c. Rules for examinations, mini-compositions, and quizzesa. You do not need a blue book or bubble sheet.b. You only need PEN OR PENCIL.c. No hats/caps/backpacks/Cell phones. If you need to bring your backpack, it will be placed against the wall near

your instructor’s desk.d. Your CELL PHONE and other ELECTRONIC DEVICES needs to be in your backpack against the wall. e. On exam days especially, your instructor will have a timer on the screen so that you can better time manage each

section of the exam. f. Once you hand in your exam you will be able to retrieve your items.g. Mandatory: Sign the UNC HONOR CODE.

8. FINAL EXAM (20%)A. Final exam. Each instructor will give their students the location of the final exam the last week of class. B. Rules for Final Exam:

e. During the final exam your instructor will have a timer on the screen so that you can better time manage each section of the exam. If there is not a screen timer, your instructor will write the time on the board every 30 minutes.

f. You have 3 hours to complete the exam.g. Once you hand in your exam you will be able to retrieve your items.h. Mandatory: Sign the UNC HONOR CODE.

C. DO NOT BE LATE: Listening section of the final exam will start at 8:00 a.m. D. RECOMMENDATION: SET 2 ALARM CLOCKS!!!! AND/OR HAVE A BUDDY SYSTEM.

9. PRONUNCIATION PRACTICES: (5%)There are 3 pronunciation activities. The first one is NOT for grade. It is labeled “Pronunciation Practice.” The purpose of the “Pronunciation Practice” is that you know how to record and to give your instructor an example of your pronunciation. These activities are designed for you to practice your pronunciation individually. The instructions for these assignments are under the ‘Assignments’ tab in Sakai with specific instructions for each one.

10. ACKLAND MUSEUM PROJECT: (10%)The Ackland Art Museum Project has two components:

a. Ackland Scavenger Hunt-To be completed in Sakai at the Ackland Art Museum (3%)b. Oral Interview at the Ackland Art Museum (7%)—Interviews will be at the Ackland Art Museum.

Instructions regarding the Ackland Museum Project are in Sakai under the link ‘Lessons’ ‘Ackland Museum Project’. The assignment has two components:

A. Ackland Scavenger Hunt. Each section of SPAN105 will be assigned a specific gallery. As soon as the Ackland Museum assigns a gallery to your section, your instructor will post that information in Sakai and announce it in class.

B. Oral Interview at the Ackland Art Museum. The instructions are in Sakai under ‘Lessons. Your instructor will tell you the day that he/she will discuss them in class approximately 15 days before the interview so that you have time to prepare.

11. WEEKLY QUIZZES (ONLINE-MSL)—Drop 1 Lowest Grade (10%)These quizzes are based on material covered in class that week. All quizzes will be done in MSL. They open on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. and close on Monday by 11:59 p.m. Once you open a quiz in MSL, you must complete it. These quizzes will vary in format (fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, short answer, listening comprehension, etc.) and may test grammar, content of a written passage or any material covered in class. WARNING: Make sure to have good wireless connection or take it at a computer lab that is connected directly to the Internet with an Ethernet cable. Dey Hall 109 is a computer lab that has excellent connection to the Internet.

1. ABSOLUTELY NO Late work: No late work can be accepted for a grade nor can exams be taken late unless officially excused.No extra credit assignments will be given in SPAN105.No make-up quizzes / exam without absence justification.
