Rules for Nouns:
All nouns are either masculine or feminine.
Most nouns that end in –o are masculine; e.g. el hijo, el libro, etc.
Most nouns that end in –a are feminine; e.g. la revista, la flauta, etc.
There are some exceptions in both of the above mentioned cases; e.g. el dia, la mano, etc.
The gender of nouns ending in –e and most consonants cannot be predicted; e.g. el lapiz, el papel, la clase, la luz, etc.
Nouns ending in -dad, -tad, -tud, -umbre, -ion, -ie, -cia, -ez, -eza, -nza, -sis, -itis, are usually feminine; e.g. la verdad, la libertad, la multitud, la nacion, la serie, la diferencia, la pereza, la esperenza, la tesis, la faringitis, etc.
Nouns referring to people (and some animals) that end in –or, -es, -on, and –in, are usually masculine, and turn to the feminine form if an –a is added to the end; e.g. el doctor, la doctora, el frances, la francesa, el campeon, la campeona, el bailarin, la bailarina, etc.
Nouns ending in –aje, -ambre, -or, -an, or a stressed vowel, are usually masculine; e.g. el equipaje, el calambre, el calor, el refran, el champu etc.
Some nouns, such as those ending in –a, -e, -ista, -nte, change only their article when converting to the female form; e.g. el/ la artista, el/ la interprete, el/ la lider, el/ la atleta, el/ la cantante, el/ la martir, etc.
The numbers, the days of the week, the months of the year, the names of languages, compound nouns (such as el paraguas, el salvavidas), the colors, the names of water bodies, foreign words that have entered Spanish and all infinitives (e.g. smoking, eating) are masculine.
The names of trees are masculine, while the names of their fruit are feminine.
Nouns beginning with a stressed –a or –ha are feminine, but take the masculine article when in the singular form; e.g. el agua, las aguas.
Some Spanish words have both a masculine and feminine gender, although the meaning of the word changes according to the article; e.g. el capital (money) and la capital (capital city), el policia (policeman) and la policia (policewoman or police force) etc.
Sometimes an inanimate feminine noun can be applied to a male person with a change in meaning; e.g. la camara (camera) and el camara (cameraman).
