Night view of the meandering walk at the Greenway with lighting and water effect
Benefit of Innovative Green Infrastructure Reedbed system to tackle problem of river pollution
The design concept of Garden City was coined by Ebenezer Howard in 1989 which encourages the development of self-contained community surrounded by greenbelts, residential land use, agricultural land use and industrial development. The design concept of Garden City was coined by Ebenezer Howard in 1989 which encourages the development of self-contained community surrounded by greenbelts, residential land use, agricultural land use and industrial development. The produce from the agricultural activities would be consumed by the community and for exporting to surrounding town to generate revenue and boosting rural economy while keeping the rural tranquillity.
The agricultural land use is located next to the River Petteril which is labelled with on the map. There is pollution problem of the River Petteril. Waste disposal from farmlands is one of the sources of pollutants such as agrochemicals, organic matter and saline disposal to drainage system. To tackle the problem, a reedbed system is proposed to improve water quality of the River Petteril.
Vertical reedbed system, Horizontal reedbed system and Willow land do not only improve water quality but also provides a beautiful scenery. The wooden bridge design allows the community to have a leisure walk and enjoy the beautiful landscape.
Agricultural land use does not only provide food to the community but also increase infiltration to the soil and reduce chance of flooding. There would be an increase in impermeable surface and the greenery cover helps to reduce surface runoff and chance of flooding. Besides, farmland also helps to reduce carbon footprint and combat global warming. It is suggested that integrating urban farm to green infrastructure. GI requires connectivity. Connecting the St’ Cuthburt’s Garden Village to the farmlands as an enhanced GI strategy to the site.
