BASIC INFORMATION

Course Dates:

• Managing Hazards o June 25 – July 16, 2016 (3 weeks – 3 credits) o June 25 – August 6, 2016 (6 weeks – 6 credits)

• National and Homeland Security

o June 25 – July 22, 2016 (4 weeks – 6 credits)

• Wars, Wealth, and Welfare: State-Building o June 25 – July 16, 2016 (3 weeks – 3 credits) o June 25 – August 6, 2016 (6 weeks – 6 credits)

Classes begin on Monday the 25th of June. You should plan to arrive on Sunday the 28th at the latest so you can be ready for class on Monday. However, you may check in to your apartment Saturday the 25th at the earliest.

If you are not traveling abroad before or after your program, you will need to book your flight such that you arrive at least a day before the program begins (so you will leave the US on June 23nd or 24rd, because it takes an entire day to fly from the US to Europe).

You must be out of the apartment the day after your program ends. So the individuals in 3 week programs must be out of Moonraker July 16th, individuals in the 4 week programs your checkout date is July 23rd, and lastly the ones in the 6 week programs your checkout date is August 8th. Therefore, you depart from London the day after your program ends. If you are wanting to travel after your program date that is fine but you’re responsible for finding somewhere else to stay.

Visas: If you are an international student and/or are not eligible for a US passport, SPEA will provide you with a visa letter that you can use to obtain a tourist visa. You will then need to purchase a tourist visa, as you will not be able obtain a student visa, even though you will be studying in the European Union.

If you are a US citizen, you will not need a visa for the European Union if your stay is less than 90 days.

Customs: When you arrive to London, you will need to make your way through customs. Make sure you bring both a copy of the syllabus, as well as your official acceptance letter to show to the border control officer. The SPEA International Office will provide you with an official acceptance letter prior to your departure.

PURCHASING an OYSTER CARD

An Oyster Card is a smartcard, like a credit card, which can hold pay as you go credit, Travel card and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets. Use it to travel on bus, Tube, Tram, DLR, London Overground and most National Rail services in London. This is the EASIEST and CHEAPEST way to pay for traveling on London’s public transportation services.

Purchasing an Oyster Card

• The easiest way to buy an Oyster Card is to go on the Underground station and talk to the personnel at the ticket booth. Tell them you will be in London for two weeks and that you need an Oyster Card for daily travel.

• When you get a new Oyster card, you’ll need to pay a £5 deposit. When you leave London, return your Oyster Card to any station with a staffed ticket booth and they will refund your deposit. If you still have Pay As You Go credit on the card when you return it, they will refund that as well.

Using your Oyster Card

• The Oyster Card functions as a travel pass this is more efficient than paper tickets. You touch the card to the gate scanners when you enter/or exit the Underground station, and scan it when using other forms of public transportation.

• You can keep the card in your wallet and touch your wallet to the gate scanners, but beware that sometimes the scanners will get confused if you have other credit/debit cards in your wallet. Unless you have many cards, you should be fine. If you do encounter problems, just take your Oyster Card out of your wallet and touch it to the scanners.

• When you need to reload your card, you can do so by talking to the staff at the ticket booths or by using the electronic ticket machines. If you use the ticket machines, simply follow the directions on the screen. You can add as much as you want to your card at any time.

Budget 3 weeks 4 weeks 6 weeks Airfare $1,500-$1,800 $1,500-$1,800 $1,500-$1,800 Food $175-$350/week $175-$350/week $175-$350/week Laundry $7 one load / week $7 one load / week $7 one load / week Oyster Card $100 $150 $175 Miscellaneous (Shows, Entertainment, Tours)

$50-$70/week $50-$70/week $50-$70/week

Pubs $75/week $75/week $75/week Emergency Fund $200 $200 $200 Total $2,721 - $3,606 $3,078-$4158 $3,717 - $5,187

Airfare: Cost will depend on two factors: when you book your flight and where you fly out of, i.e. you will typically be able to save money on airfare if you book a flight in March or after Spring Break and fly directly out of a major international airport such as Chicago as opposed to Indianapolis.

Food: This is one of the most flexible categories. The range we provided above is if you eat out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You are provided in your apartment a stove, oven, and full size fridge. With that said, you can go purchase groceries at two nearby grocery stores (Tesco or Sainsbury) which would allow you to save quite a bit of money. It should be noted that a $2 cup of coffee at Starbucks in the US is NOT the same as £2 cup of coffee in London. The current exchange rate is $1 = £0.75. Therefore, your £2 cup of coffee will equate to $2.77, this quickly begins to add up, so keep an eye out for deals and keep in mind the exchange rate.

Laundry: Every year students are surprised at how much it costs to do a load of laundry at Moonraker. We budgeted for one load a week, however if you plan on separating your laundry by colors it will obviously cost you more.

Oyster Card: Like food, this is one of the most flexible categories. Last year, a 6-week student only spent $80 for the entire trip on his oyster card (which is quite impressive). That being said we budgeted for what we think an average student will spend. You will defiantly be able to save money if you are willing to walk more, so break in those new walking shoes now.

Miscellaneous: There is so much to see and do in London that you’ll want to budget for, i.e. shows, concerts, museums (however most museums are free entry), etc. Do your research, find a group to go with, and go have fun!

Page 13: SPEA in London - Indiana University School of Public and · PDF fileprovide you with a visa letter that you can use to obtain a tourist visa. You will then need to purchase a tourist

Pubs: We know you’ll be going to pubs and clubs during your time in London, HOWEVER, DO NOT be one of “those” students that decides to spend ALL their money at the bars. It happens every year, but by the end of the trip students are eating ramen and aren’t able to afford to do anything fun because they spent all their money in the first 2 weeks getting wasted.

Emergency Fund: When traveling it is always a good idea to keep some money, we recommended $200 cash, in a secure place. Emergencies happen, i.e. missing passports, stolen/lost wallet, etc. It’s better to have a little extra cash to tide you over in case something like this does happen, then to be S.O.L.
