Reporting Back

Sean Nightingale led the leader’s news presentation.

Each leader told us what they had been doing in their

area.

Questions for the leaders

What is a safe place?

Sean explained that they are places like shops or

restaurant. You can go there if you feel confused, lost or

something bad happens.

Update - we now have a Safe Places page on the

Speak Out Council site, here where you can find out

more.

Have you had contact with the South Cambridgeshire

Youth Council?

Bill said no. But we would be interested in doing this.

Update – we have now made email contact with the

group and want to arrange for Neil or Bill to meet

with them.

Rowan Service Presentation

Bridget is one of the staff at Rowan. She showed us a

video about what they do.

They do lots of arts and craft which they show to people.

Sometimes the art goes on display in other places.

All of the people who go to Rowan then told us why they

think it is such a great place to use. They told us that

they had made lots of friends, done lots of creative work

and had fun.

For a copy of the Rowan’s presentation please email

[email protected]

Questions for Rowan

How much does it cost to go to Rowan?

£40.40 per day per student.

Are you only open to people in Cambridge city?

Page 8: Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 - VoiceAbility · 1 Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 Meadows Community Centre, Cambridge City Technology “Things That Help Us”

8

No we have students across Cambridgeshire.

How can people support Rowan with getting money?

One of our students is swimming the length of the

English Channel in a swimming pool. If you would like to

sponsor her get in touch with Rowan.

Technology and the Government – Bill Jones and

Daniel Zeichner

Bill Jones gave a presentation about one type of

technology, called social media.

Social media are places like Facebook, Twitter and

Instagram on the internet. You can go there to chat,

share photos and videos, or play games with other

people.

He talked about how it was a good way for people to talk

to one another. Social media was good at that.

Page 9: Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 - VoiceAbility · 1 Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 Meadows Community Centre, Cambridge City Technology “Things That Help Us”

9

He said there were problems though like harassment.

Harassment is when someone talks or touches you in a

way you don’t like. This could be because they are being

rude or unkind, or just because you don’t want to talk or

be touched.

He said a good way to stop harassment was to talk to

someone you trusted.

Daniel Zeichner MP talked about some of the things the

government could do about this.

He said technology like social media should help us to

have more control of over what we can do.

He thought the government needed to listen to people

with a learning disability or autism and know they might

do things in a different way.

Technology could help with this.

Questions for Daniel and Bill

Should we be worried about how to use Facebook

safely?

Bill said we should be worried a bit. We needed to

remember to talk to people we know.

Should wheelchair users have to give way to buggy

users?

Daniel said it was hard to say sometimes who had the

biggest need.

Update – The Speak Out Council are doing a project on

whether people with wheelchairs can use the wheelchair

space. They will tell everyone the results of this soon.

Key words to stay safe online

Block – if you block someone or something online, they or it

cannot reach you anymore.

Troll - a troll is someone online who will say something nasty

ways to stop things that annoy us, we don’t want or mean our

computer will not work.

Virus – a virus on your computer means that it will be very

slow or not work at all. You should download an anti-virus

program you trust on your computer to stop this from

happening.

How can we make the internet better and easier?

Better blocks which means we do not find nasty people,

photos or videos.

Page 12: Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 - VoiceAbility · 1 Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 Meadows Community Centre, Cambridge City Technology “Things That Help Us”

More photos, symbols and videos that help us understand.

Have more courses or people nearby who know about the

internet.

Only talk to people we trust about what we do online.

Only talk to people we know online.

Know how to keep our personal information safe.

It should answer questions however we ask it and tell us the

truth.

Make ways to keep our information safe, like passwords,

easier to use.

There should be lots of ways to go online.

Page 13: Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 - VoiceAbility · 1 Speak Out Council Meeting 11 March 2016 Meadows Community Centre, Cambridge City Technology “Things That Help Us”

13

Who can we talk to make the internet easier?

People that are paid to help us like teachers, support workers

and personal assistants

People who look after us but are not paid, like carers,

guardians and parents

People who know about IT or can teach us about it.

Websites that tell us what we need to know.

2. Going to all the parts of Cambridgeshire. We always

do at least one consultation in: East Cambridgeshire; the

Fens; Huntingdonshire; South Cambs and Cambridge

City.

3. Talking to people with lots of sorts of learning disability

and across the autistic spectrum. We try to have at one

consultation either for high support needs or high

functioning autism.

Does anyone know of a place that can help people with

High Support Needs to use the internet?

We knew of places like CamTrust, but we weren’t sure if

they had many high support needs service users. If

anyone knows of a place email us.

Are there any websites that are easy to use?

Lots of disability organisations like SCOPE, MENCAP

and VoiceAbility are quite easy to use. The Speak Out

Council is also working to make sure the NHS and

County Council make their sites easier to use.
