Update from the PublicEducation Program:

Dear Friends,

Child abuse is any mistreatment of a child (under 18) by a parent or caregiver that results in harm or injury. Child abuse includes physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. Child abuse can be a one-time occurrence but more often it is a pattern. Frequently, the longer child abuse goes on, the more serious the consequences. Child abuse is more likely to happen when an adult has low levels of tolerance for frustration, inadequate coping skills, and/or misconceptions about child development and what it means to be a parent or caregiver. According to the Online Automated Services Information System (OASIS), at the Virginia Department of Social Services this means in Northern Virginia:

• 9,831 children were reported as abused and/or neglected.

• 6,662 children were involved in valid cases of abuse and neglect.

• 1,100 children were in founded cases of abuse and neglect.

Unfortunately, we know that child abuse is underreported and far more children are affected by abuse and neglect in our communities. Where possible, CPS works to provide family assessment, safety planning and services for families in valid cases where there isn’t evidence that rises to a “founded” case. What can YOU do to prevent child abuse and neglect? As a community member, the most important things you can do are:

1. REPORT ABUSE by calling 1-800-552-7096.

2. OFFER HELP AND SUPPORT to a struggling parent.

3. ASK FOR HELP if you’re a parent or caregiver.

New at SCAN:Meet The Baby Box!

This past fall, SCAN expanded its Operation Safe Babies program to include baby boxes and education through the Baby Box Co. and Baby Box University. This new

program allows expecting parents the ability to participate in an interactive educational training designed to make sure they know about safe sleep, breastfeeding, how to use the Baby Box, and other important health and developmental information. After successfully taking a quiz at the end of the online training, expecting parents receive a certificate good for one Baby Box filled with a few goodies for baby. According to Carl Ayers, Director of the Division of Family Services at VDSS, sleep-related deaths are the leading cause of infant deaths, age 1 month to 1 year, in Virginia. For the past two years, SCAN--in partnership with over 12 local agencies--has given out over 700 pack-and-plays to low income families in need of a safe sleep environment for their baby in an effort to reduce this number. By becoming a Baby Box Co. distribution site, SCAN has been able to engage with even more parents, not only to share information on safe sleep and abusive head trauma, but also to connect them with the numerous parenting resources that SCAN offers. It’s important to know that this program is not all about the box, it is about engaging parents and caregivers and talking about safe sleep. Parents who are interested in the Baby Box University should go to www.babyboxuniversity.com . If you are interested in learning more about Operation Safe Babies and would like to volunteer with the program, please contact Tracy Leonard, Public Education Manager at [email protected].

Parent Education Letter A look back, a look ahead:

Dear Friends,

For many of us, the New Year means it’s time to reflect on the past year as well as set goals for the year to come. As I take stock of what SCAN’s parenting program has done in 2017, I can’t help but feel very proud of the accomplishments. With the curriculum, Strengthening Families, added to our repertoire in combination with our other programs we were able to directly serve 250 parents and over 320 youth. But what makes these numbers more meaningful are the real-life stories behind them. Here are a couple of conversations we had with parents about their participation:

DAVID: “I liked attending the program with my daughter. I rarely spend time with her due to work, but enjoyed being in the class with her and even the car rides to and from the classes. My daughter also liked the program as she was learning more about me and felt she could share more about herself with me. The family sessions were my favorite! It gave me an opportunity to practice what I learned in the parent session.”

MANUEL: "I found the classes to be very helpful with identifying behaviors that parents like me face with their middle school child. I learned more effective ways to problem solve with my daughter rather than the ways I was currently using. Coming to the class with my wife was very helpful as now we are on the same page when interacting with our daughter and making decisions/problem-solving."

We celebrate the success of parents like David and Manuel, and those of the many other families who we had the honor to meet last year. We know that we have more to do!

Looking at the year ahead, we plan to continue to offer the same programs but also add curricula and workshops that dive deeper into specific topics, focus on parenting children in specific age groups, and address new trends.

Parents have already started to register for our 2018 programs, and we look forward to being there for them (and their children) no matter where they are on their parenting journey. It truly is a Happy New Year!

Update on the Alexandria/Arlington CASA Program:

Dear Friends,

Wow! It’s been a very busy six months at the Alexandria/Arlington CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Program. In September we began our 38th pre-service training and eleven new advocates were sworn in this fall by all four Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judges. This training included a dedicated class on Educational Advocacy, an area where many of our children have fallen through the cracks. They will greatly benefit from having someone ensure that they have the necessary services to achieve academic success during difficult times in their lives. We also expanded our training on cultural competency and poverty awareness to prepare our advocates for work within our diverse communities. We are now planning a poverty simulation activity that we hope to offer this spring.

As the holidays approached and the opioid epidemic continued to worsen, we saw an increase in CASA appointments in both Alexandria and Arlington. There has also been an increase in requests for Children In Need of Services/Supervision (CHINS) and custody cases. The good news is that we have been able to assign an advocate to every child in need. But if the trend continues, we will definitely need more advocates. If you are currently on a break and are interested in taking a new case, please let us know. If you know anyone who might like to become an advocate, we will start our spring training class on February 26, 2018 and are taking applications now…please spread the word!

In my seven months here at SCAN, I have truly met some of the most amazing, interesting and dedicated people--from staff to advocates to stakeholders in our community. I have had the opportunity to speak with each of our J & DR Court Judges and they have all shared the same sentiments: they genuinely appreciate the work that our volunteers do and the information they provide through court reports is invaluable to them. For some, it is the first document they read when preparing for a hearing. That is a true testament to the job CASA volunteers do.

As we move into 2018, I wish you all the best for the year and thank you in advance for your time, effort, and the commitment you make to the abused and neglected children of Alexandria and Arlington.

Welcome New Volunteers!

After more than 35 hours of training, our newest class of CASA volunteers took their final step in becoming an advocate and were sworn

in on November 13, 2017 by the Hon. Judge Robb at the Arlington Juvenile Court. Also in attendance were the Hon. Judge Varoutsos, Chief Justice of the Arlington Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court; the Hon. Judge Frogale, Chief Justice of the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court; and the Hon. Judge Damiani, of the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Each judge spoke of the value they place on the information provided in CASA reports and the importance of the work that these new advocates are about to begin.

Our newest advocates range from recent college graduate to grandparent. They have visited or lived in over 80 different countries, served in the military, work full time, part time or are retired. This class truly bonded on their journey through training and didn't want to see it end! Please help me welcome our newest advocates into the SCAN family of volunteers: Maeve Ulrick, Mhari Anderson, Lucia Cervantes, Julie Evans, Kelly Canter, Brooke Mitchell, Craig James Geddes, Dianne Chatelain, Sandra Martinez, Tammy Chorbaji, and Shewta Kumar.

Meet Debora Brown: SCAN's Children's Program Coordinator1. What attracted you to the position of Children’s Program Coordinator at SCAN? I was attracted to the position because I had previously worked with the Nurturing Parenting Program with Fairfax County and I enjoyed working with different families. I wanted the opportunity to be more involved with the implementation of the curriculum and being able to add my creative spin to the classes was a plus. I can remember being a child and following my mother around when she took me along with her as she worked with the parenting program years ago. Having grown up seeing "service" in motion, working here was only natural. Reaching people, serving families and touching lives is what keeps me grounded and gratifies me the most.

2. What have you found most challenging about your experience in the position? The most challenging aspect of this position is saying goodbye to the kids. It is only natural that after spending each week for 8 weeks or more with the families that you create bonds with the children. You work so hard to develop a level of trust, respect and care, and just when the kids are getting used to you and vice versa, the classes are over. The reality is that I may not see these kids again but I can only hope that I have impacted their lives in that short period of time positively.

3. What have you found most rewarding? The most rewarding aspect of the job is getting to view things, issues and concerns from the eyes of the youth in this day and age. I find myself learning a lot from them—what struggles they face in school, at home and inside of themselves. They continue to teach me compassion and that no one is too young or too old to make positive changes. They prove to me that there are possibilities in everything if we choose to see them. I have learned that judgment has no place in true service and that compassion can overcome bias.

4. Do you have any memories that stand out to you that illustrate the impact of the program on children who participate? A lasting memory for me is of one little girl that was having a tough relationship with her father. Her father had had a difficult childhood and continued some of the negative practices his parents had used with him into his parenting, creating a relationship of fear. This father had been pretty resistant to the parenting class experience. One exercise that I like to do in the children's class is to have the parents write “love letters” to their children. This little girl read a letter from her father; he expressed that he wanted to be kind and loving to her and wanted to share a dance with his little girl. He ended the letter with “from your secret admirer”. On graduation day, the kids performed a song and invited their parents to dance with them. As this little girl and her father danced that day, the tears running down her mother's face are something that I will not forget.

SCAN is thrilled to announce a number of additions to its Honorary Board and Board of Directors in 2018. Please help us welcome:

ERIN HODSON, MSN joins SCAN's Honorary Board of Directors. Erin is an Administrator & Vice President with Inova Children’s Hospital, bringing valuable knowledge of the impact of child abuse on the health and wellbeing of our community's children, as well as insight to the complicated healthcare system and how it impacts families. Welcome, Erin!

ADRIENNE HENSLEY joins SCAN's Board of Directors as a seasoned not-for-profit board member. She has previously served as a pre-school teacher, hospice counselor and physician’s office administrator, and offers SCAN a unique combination of knowledge and training in both early childhood education and psychology. Welcome, Adrienne!

OSIRIS HOIL, the CEO and co-owner of District Taco, joins SCAN's Board of Directors. A Mexican immigrant and entrepreneur, Osiris was inspired by his mother’s recipes and began serving Yucatan style creations out of a food truck in 2009. With the support of friends and neighbors, District Taco developed a dedicated following and plans to expand nationally. (You've probably seen a District Taco truck at SCAN's Croquet Day!) Hoil is a father of three, and hopes to continue to inspire others to work hard and to reach their goals. Welcome, Osiris!

LEANA KATZ was honored in 2016 with SCAN's Cleary Award, and now joins SCAN's Board of Directors. Prior to marriage and 3 children, Leana worked in federal consulting for Accenture. She volunteered as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) with SCAN for 10 years, and continues to be one of the program's most vocal and generous supporters. Leana also serves as a member of 100 Women Strong, a philanthropic giving circle in Loudoun County, and Venture Philanthropy Partners in Washington DC. A mother of three, she also serves as her husband’s closest confidente and most trusted business advisor as he has built a thriving business in CustomInk. Welcome, Leana!

SCAN also welcomes VIRGINIA GONZALEZ as our new Bilingual CASA Case Supervisor. Born in California, Virginia moved to Texas as a toddler. She spent ten years with MADD, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, eventually taking over the West Texas affiliate as Executive Director. With advocacy clearly "in her DNA," she moved to CASA of El Paso where she worked for two years as a CASA Case Supervisor. Virginia and her family moved to Northern Virginia in the summer of 2017, where she hoped to be able to continue to advocate for those without a voice. “Advocating for children brings purpose to my life and gives me a true sense of fulfillment," she notes. We are so happy to have found Virginia and thrilled that her passion for CASA brought her to our program!

We also welcome part-time Business Operations Manager, CHRISTINA ZAVERI, who will take on some of the financial administration tasks necessary now that SCAN has grown to a $1M organization.

SCAN said goodbye to MSW Intern CHAMONE MARSHALL. Chamone was a valuable team member who did everything from write blog posts to help plan trainings to research child welfare data and trends. We will miss her and wish her the best of luck as she returns to the University of Southern California!

Advocacy Day: SPEAK UP FOR CHILDREN IN 2018

Thanks to support from Verizon, SCAN hosted its 6th Annual Advocacy Day in November. Prevent Child Abuse Virginia's Johanna Schuchert and Voices for

Virginia's Children's Mary Beth Testa were on-site to provide advocacy training and legislative updates. Delegate David Bulova joined Delegate Mark Levine’s Chief of Staff Steven Marku and Senator Jennifer Wexton (who participated via phone) for the afternoon panel. The group discussed effective advocacy tactics at all levels; critical legislative updates; and policy priorities for the upcoming 2018 Virginia General Assembly session including closing licensing loopholes for school employees related to sexual misconduct in schools. This topic was highlighted by special guest Scott MacFarlane, investigative reporter with NBC4 who has extensively covered local misconduct cases, as well as Dr. Charole Shakeshaft from Virginia Commonwealth University. The panel discussion also focused on advocating for public policy relating to substance-exposed infants and Erin’s Law, which requires that all public schools implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse awareness program.
