Express likes and dislikes about sports and hobbies

(English version)

Objectives

· At the end of the activity, students will have reviewed and used orally and in writing, the vocabulary about sports and hobbies, likes and dislikes according to the different degrees.

Activity Summary

Through videos and visual materials, students will review their knowledge about sports, hobbies, likes and dislikes. After that, they will use the content learned to complete oral and written exercises interacting with the rest of the class.

Time allocation

One or two 40-50 minutes period

Procedire

· Activity 1 - Introduction – Present and review the sports and hobbies vocabulary

a. The students will watch the videos Vocabulario de los Deportes (https://www.powtoon.com/c/fvGig8Iyvh1/1/m) and Spanish Verbs for Activities and Hobbies (https://youtu.be/XmPVQSCus40) about sports and hobbies. They will use the Handout 1 to make a list of the vocabulary presented in both videos. Show the videos more than once if necessary.

b. The teacher will show the images with different sports and hobbies from the presentation Deportes y pasatiempos and ask the students to tell the names of the activities and prompt them to say sentences about the sports/hobbies using the subject pronouns learned in a previous lesson. For example: ‘Ella nada en la piscina.’ The teacher will highlight that some sports/hobbies are similar in both languages. For example: ‘play the piano’ – ‘tocar el piano’. Then, the students will complete the Handout 2 to review the sports vocabulary.

c. The teacher will ask some students (helping them with gestures if necessary ) if they like or not the sports/activities from the presentation or the Handout 2 to introduce the phrases me gusta, te gusta, les gusta, nos gusta. Then, he/she will ask about other students. For example:

‘¿Qué le gusta hacer a María?’> ‘Correr’

‘¿Qué me gusta hacer a mí?’>‘Cantar’

d. The teacher will explain how they should use likes and dislikes in Spanish with the presentation Gustos y preferencias. He/she will highlight the following important points different in both languages:

· Subject and object

· Verb conjugation and plural and singular forms

· The different verbs which express likes and dislikes

· Affirmative, negative and interrogative form

· Activity 2 – Likes and dislikes of my classmates – Oral activity

a. The teacher will distribute the Handout 3 to each student and explain that they should walk around the classroom asking questions to their classmates to complete the chart. They should ask and answer using the following structure:

‘¿Te gusta saltar a la soga?’>‘Me gusta saltar a la soga’

‘¿Te gusta jugar golf?’>‘No, no me gusta jugar golf’

b. Each student stands in front of the class with their chart in hand and the teacher will ask 3 questions that he/she should answer in a complete sentence using the information from the chart. The questions can be:

· ¿A quién le gusta ________________?

· ¿A quién no le gusta ________________?

· ¿A quién le encanta ________________?

· ¿Quién detesta ______________?

· ¿A quién le aburre ________________?

· ¿A [name of a student] le gusta ______________?

· ¿Qué le gusta / encanta / detesta / aburre hacer a [name of a student]?

Suggested evaluation method

It is advisable to have a rubric to assess speaking activities in which it should be clear to students how to move from one level to the next. A rubric indicating how a student is Meeting, Exceeding or not Meeting Expectations is the most useful. The suggested “Speaking Production Rubric” can be used (Handout 4).
