Mainframe Strength. The 587Tmainframe is built to absorb high impactshock loads and twisting forces.

Seat. Ergonomically designed andfully adjustable for maximum comfort.The seat cushion reduces the pressure onthe lower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

Clear Full-Circle View. A tapered hoodand “notched” fuel tank give the operatora clear line of sight to the front, rear andside work areas. The new streamlineddesign of the Caterpillar 587T Pipelayeroffers several operator visibilityimprovements for more precisemaneuvering and placement of pipe.

Finger Tip Control (FTC). Finger tipcontrols are clustered to the operator’sleft for easy one-handed operation,controlling steering, direction andgear selection.

Access Ladder. Direct access to theoperator’s station utilizing ladder onleft side of the machine.

Monitoring System. Provides the operatorinstant feedback on the condition ofoperating systems and records suchperformance data as high/low gaugereadings to help diagnose problems andmanage undercarriage. Has gauges thatmonitor the temperature of the enginecoolant, hydraulic oil and power trainoil, plus the fuel level. Also has a digitaland gauge type tachometer.

Ergonomic Work Tool Controls.Pipelayer controls are low effort andallow simultaneous, precise positioningof the hook and boom with one hand.

Finger Tip Control (FTC). Finger tipcontrols are clustered to the operator’sleft for easy one-handed operation,controlling steering, direction andgear selection.

Electronic Clutch and Brake (ECB).Electronic clutch and brake steeringsystem consists of two small leverswhich send signals that control thesteering valve.

• levers require less then 1.4 kg (3 lb)of pull to actuate.

• steering is similar to traditionalclutch and brake arrangementsbut with less time and effort.

ECB system allows the operator to workmore precisely in close areas, aroundstructures, obstacles, grade stakes orother machines.

Adjustable Operator Comfort. The systemis attached to an electrical linear actuatorwhich allows the FTC module to beadjusted up and down.

Fore/aft adjustment is controlled by amanual lever on the front of the controlmodule. The rigidly mounted hand gripprovides firm support for the operator.

Machine Direction. Machine directionis controlled by a pivoting knob whichcan be actuated by the thumb of the lefthand. Rotating the knob up moves themachine forward. Rotating the knobdown moves the machine in reverse.Neutral is the central position.

Gear Selection. Gear selection ismade by two buttons to the right ofthe machine direction knob. The top(up-shift) button shifts the machinetransmission to the next higher gearwhile the (down-shift) button shiftsto the next lower gear.

Parking Brake Switch. This switchelectronically locks the ECB systemand transmission control.

Torque Divider. A high efficiencytorque divider with freewheel statorprovides high torque multiplicationwhile shielding the drive train fromsudden torque shocks and vibration.

Elevated Final Drives.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The Finger Tip Control (FTC) systemhas an additional drive train feature foradded performance, Electronic ClutchPressure Control (ECPC). This featureprovides smoother shifting by modulatingindividual clutches. ECPC also providesthe auto-shift and auto-kickdown feature.

Steering Clutch and Brake. Fade resistantand adjustment free. The multi-disc,oil-cooled steering clutches arehydraulically applied and electronicallycontrolled. The brakes are applied bysprings and hydraulically released frosafe and reliable braking performance.

Drawbar Pull vs. Ground Speed.As loads on the tractor increase,the 587T offers unmatched luggingcapability and smooth shifting as theneed occurs to change gears undervarying loads. The 3-speed forward,3-speed reverse transmission offersexcellent runout speeds.

Modular Power Train. The modularpower train design permits quickremoval and installation of majorcomponents such as the engine,transmission and final drives.

Engine . The Cat® C15 engine withACERT™ Technology provides thepower for the 587T. Performing atfull-rated net power of 273 kW (366 hp)at 1,800 rpm, the large displacementand high torque rise provides the 587Tthe power needed on challenging jobs.Matched to the high-efficiency torquedivider and electronically controlledpower shift transmission, it will provideyears of dependable service.

C15 Block. The one-piece, grey ironblock features generous ribbing forstiffness and heavy bearing bulkheadsfor rigidity and strength. Incorporationof straight o-ring connection pointsreduces the loss of engine oil and fluids.

Constant Net Horsepower.

• Constant net horsepower allows theoperator to maintain high standardsof performance and response, evenwhen parasitic loads, such as theon-demand cooling fan, are applied.

• Engine automatically adjusts tomaintain power output and converselylowers output when demands are low.

• Significant fuel savings in coolerclimates and during long engine idletimes typical of pipeline applications.

ADEM™ A4 Engine Controller.The ADEM A4 electronic controlmodule manages fuel delivery to getthe best performance per liter (gallon)of fuel used. It provides flexible fuelmapping, allowing the engine to respondquickly to varying application needs.It tracks engine and machine conditionswhile keeping the engine operating atpeak efficiency.

Fuel Delivery. Multiple injection fueldelivery involves a high degree ofprecision. Precisely shaping thecombustion cycle lowers combustionchamber temperatures generatingfewer emissions and optimizing fuelcombustion; translating into morework output for your fuel cost.

MEUI Fuel System. A highly evolved fuelsystem with a proven record of reliabilityin the field. MEUI combines the technicaladvancement of an electronic controlsystem with the simplicity of directmechanically controlled unit fuelinjection. The MEUI system excels inits ability to control injection pressureover the entire engine operating speedrange. These features allow the C15 tohave complete control over injectiontiming, duration, and pressure.

ATAAC and Turbocharging. Air-to-airaftercooling keeps air intake temperaturesdown and, in concert with the tighttolerance combustion chambercomponents, maximizes fuel efficiencyand minimizes emissions. Significantimprovements in air flow are generatedby a water-cooled turbocharger, uniquecross-flow head and single overhead cam.

Service. Easier maintenance and repairthrough monitoring key functions andlogging critical indicators. Electronicdiagnostic access is possible with asingle tool, the Cat Electronic Technician.

Rollers and Idlers. Feature symmetricDuo-Cone™ seals for long sealinglife to prevent oil loss and dirt entry.Toric rings maintain performanceover a wide range of temperatures.Rollers and idlers are serviceable andrebuildable to provide value.

Roller Frames. Roller frames are tubularto resist bending and twisting, withadded reinforcement where operatingloads are highest.

• The recoil system is sealed andlubricated.

Sprocket Segments. Made exclusivelyof Caterpillar Tough Steel™ for longerwear life and precision machined afterheat treat for proper fit. Segments canbe removed or replaced withoutbreaking the track.

Positive Pin Retention (PPR) Sealedand Lubricated Track. Designed forhigh-impact and high load applications.The PPR exclusive Caterpillar designlocks the link to the pin.
