Cat C18 Engine with ACERT® Technology.The Cat C18 engine is an increaseddisplacement version of the provenCat 3456 engine. The C18 is U.S. EPATier 3/EU Stage III emissions compliantand features a 3.5 percent horsepowerincrease over the previous 3456. The C18uses ADEM™ IV (Advanced DieselEngine Management) engine controllerto manage fuel delivery and valve timing,as well as all other engine systems.

Net Torque Rise. Torque convertertorque rise is 36 percent in drive net and37 percent in direct drive. The torquecurve effectively matches the transmissionshift points to provide maximumefficiency and faster cycle times.

Starting System. The 834H uses a100-amp alternator and four 12-volt360 amp-hour batteries with a totalof 1,000 cold cranking amps.

Mechanically Actuated Electronic FuelInjection (MEUI™). MEUI is a uniquesystem that combines the technicaladvancement of an electronic controlsystem with the simplicity of directmechanically controlled unit fuel injection.The MEUI system is able to controlinjection pressure over the entire engineoperating range. These features allowthe C18 to have complete control overinjection timing, duration and pressure.

Air Cleaners. The 834H uses larger aircleaners than the 834G.

ADEM™ IV (Advanced Diesel EngineManagement). ADEM IV uses a 32-bitcomputer with sensors through the engineto regulate fuel delivery, valve timingand all other engine systems that requireinput to manage load and performance.

Air-to-Air Aftercooler (ATAAC) System.The ATAAC system provides a separatecooling system for the intake manifoldair. It routes hot, compressed air fromthe turbo and cools it with a single pass,air-to-air aluminum heat exchanger.The cooled, compressed air greatlyreduces the emissions produced,meeting U.S. EPA Tier 3/EU Stage IIIrequirements.

• Airflow matched turbocharger withpower rating helps reduce emissions.

• 19 percent more bearing area allowsthe engine to operate at the maximumcylinder pressure.

• Higher cylinder pressure capabilityhelps reduce fuel consumption andimprove high altitude operation.

• Cylinder heat exhaust port sleevesreduce heat rejection which resultsin less heat transfer into the waterjacket system.

Separate Engine Cooling System.The radiator and fan are isolated fromthe engine compartment for more efficientcooling which allows a sloped hood thatprovides an improved viewing area.

Next Generation Modular Radiator(NGMR). The parallel flow system, withsix cores standard, improves coolingcapabilities. Serviceability is enhancedas there is no top tank to remove.The NGMR uses copper brazedbrass tubes and copper fins.

Electronically Controlled, PlanetaryPower Shift Transmission. The Cattransmission features perimeter-mounted,large diameter clutch packs and controlinertia for smooth shifting and increasedcomponent life. It can be recalibratedusing the Cat Electronic Technician (ET)service tool.

Parking Brake. The spring-applied, oilreleased and dry disc parking brake ismounted on the transfer heat outputshaft. Manual override is possible toallow movement of the machine.

Impeller Clutch Torque Converter (ICTC).Combined with the Rimpull ControlSystem (RCS), the ICTC allows theoperator maximum flexibility inmodulating rimpull.

• The torque converter is equippedwith a standard lock-up clutchfor direct drive efficiency.

• The ICTC offers the ability tocompensate for wear by recalibrationfor optimum left pedal modulationregardless of torque converter wear.

• The operator can reduce rimpull to20 percent while maintaining highengine speed for slower workwithout losing power by using theleft pedal. After 20 percent, furtherpedal travel applies the brake.

• The RCS allows the operator to selectfrom four preset rimpull settings(low, medium, high and maximum).

Heavy Duty Axles. Optional axle oilcoolers, permanently lubed universal jointsand stronger axle components in both thedifferential and final drives are offeredfor increased performance, serviceabilityand durability. The conventionaldifferential is standard.

Final Drives. The final drives featureplanetary reduction at each wheel.Torque is developed at the wheel whichprovides less stress at the axle shafts.The planetary units are oil-bath lubricatedand can be removed independently fromthe wheels and brakes. Ring gears arespleened to the axle housing. Proprietarygear cutting and heat treating methodsare used in the manufacturing andbronze thrust washers interface withthe sun gear/bearing retainer.

Free-Floating Axle Shafts. The free-floating axle shafts can be removedindependently of the wheels andplanetaries for quick and easyserviceability.

Optional Axle Oil Cooling System.The axle oil cooling system has beenredesigned to make it a more reliableand robust system. The fan motor isnow driven by separate 10W oil sourceinstead of the oil from the axle.

Axle Shaft, Oil Disc Brakes. These brakesare adjustment-free, fully hydraulic andcompletely sealed. Disc face groovesprovide cooling, even when brakesare applied for a long, fade-resistantservice life.

Service Brakes. Four wheel, hydraulic,oil dipped multiple disc service brakesare adjustment-free, completely enclosedand allow modulated engagementwithout slack adjusters.

Secondary Brakes. The secondarybrakes are fully modulated. The frontand rear service brake circuits areisolated so one circuit can operate ifpressure drops in the other circuit.

Cat Engine Compression Brake.The heavy-duty compression brakesupplies engine braking torque byopening the exhaust valves duringthe compression stroke of the engine.It provides 25 percent more brakingpower in the recommended operatingrange when compared to previoussystems.

Electro-Hydraulic Control System.Hydraulic efficiency is increased andoperator comfort is enhanced throughthe low-effort fingertip controls. XT-3™and XT-5™ hose combine with reliablecomponents to help reduce the risk ofleaks and blown lines.

Blade Control. A floor-mounted, singlelever, fingertip control for lift/lower/tilt/tip sends electronic signals to a mainhydraulic valve positioned outside thecab. This eliminates sound, heat andcontrol effort associated with the in-cabhydraulic valve systems. The tilt/tipswitch has been moved to the joystickfor ease of operation because the operatordoes not have to remove his hand fromthe joystick to adjust the tilt or tip.

Automatic Blade Positioning (ABP).This patented system is intended tolower fatigue, increase comfort and helpmake the operators more productive.It mimics manual operations byautomatically lowering the blade whenthe machine is shifted forward andraising it in reverse. The set points towhere the blade raises/lowers can beeasily adjusted from the operator’s seat.

Additionally, a “kick-out” featureallows the operator to raise/lowerthe blade without having to hold thejoystick in place. The operator alwaysmaintains full control of the bladeduring this cycle with the abilityto override ABP.

Tilt/Tip Circuit. Fingertip control allowsfor easy operation of the tilt/tip circuit.Lift circuit features:

• Four positions – raise, hold, lowerand float

• Detente hold on float

Case Drain Filtration. The 834Hhas two case drain filters that protectthe steering and fan pumps fromcontamination with easy accessfor service.

Load Sensing Steering. The STICcontrol system integrates the steeringand transmission into a single controller.The steering system utilizes a variabledisplacement pump for maximummachine performance by directingpower through the steering systemonly when needed.

Caterpillar Monitoring System (EMS-III).EMS-III continually monitors variousmachine systems through three instrumentclusters and provides a three-levelwarning system to alert the operatorof immediate or pending problems.It shares information with the engine,hydraulic and transmission controlsthat can be used during servicing tosimplify service and troubleshooting.The Caterpillar Monitoring Systemallows for new software to beuploaded in the cab.

Demand Fan. The speed controlled,hydraulic demand fan provides maximumcooling efficiency by directing theappropriate amount of power throughthe fan system based on the coolanttemperature.

Structure Construction. Combining theuse of robotic welding on up to 90 percentof the 834H with castings used in severalareas contributes to increased strengthby helping spread the load and reducingthe number of parts. This provideshighly consistent welds with deep platepenetration and excellent plate fusion.The benefit is increased durability andfatigue strength. The computer controlledmachining ensures the alignment ofpin bore, axle pad, cab mount andtransmission/engine components.

Box Section Engine End FrameStructures. Designed to resist twistingand torsional forces, the box sectionengine end frame provides a solidfoundation for the axles, engineand transmission.

Two Plate Front Frame. The two platefront frame design provides maximumstructural strength during dozingapplications for improved stability.

Spread Hitch Design. The spread hitchdesign improves load distribution byreducing loads to the hitch bearings.The large center hitch design improveshydraulic line routing and makesservice access easier.

Upper and Lower Hitch Pins. The hitchpins pivot on double-tapered rollerbearings. Box-style sections in thehitch pins and crossmember assemblyimprove frame structure strength.Increased diameter lower hitch pinsadd to the robust design.

Engine and Transmission Mounts.A rubber isolation mount designreduces noise and vibration.

Cat Blades. Cat blades are resilient,durable and designed with excellentdozing and rolling characteristics.

• Capacities and widths are set toachieve increased productivity.

• Spreading design allows for spreadingof cover material, as well as dozingof heavier loads.

Straight Blade. The straight blade(7.9 m3/10.33 yd3) is designed forproduction dozing in stockpile materialand general earthmoving.

Universal Blade. The universal blade(11.1 m3/14.65 yd3) is designed to movelarge loads over long distances inmining applications.

Semi-Universal Blade. The characteristicsof the straight and universal blades arecombined into the semi-universal blade(10.1 m3/13.3 yd3). It provides increasedcapacity with the addition of shortwings which include only the dozerend bits without sacrificing spreadingcharacteristics of straight blades.

Coal Blade. The coal blade (22.2 m3/29 yd3) is designed for precise andproductive dozing while helping to retainload control with increased capacityfor lighter materials. Wing angles helpretain the load while dozing. This bladeis available from Cat Work Tool andServices (CWTS).

Assemblies. The straight, semi-universaland universal blades consists of the blade,push arms, hydraulic lift, tip and tiltcylinders, trunnion mounting, stabilizerand hydraulic line guards.

World Class Cab. Over 3.18 m3 (112 ft3)of volume incorporates innovations foroperator comfort, maneuverability andproductivity. Features include outstandingviewing area, cab ventilation withinterior sound levels below 77 dB(A), acoat hook, cup holder, storage bin, roomfor a large lunch cooler and intermittentwet-arm wipers. It is also radio-ready.

1 STIC System. The STIC controllercombines gear selection into one leverthat requires less effort and providessmooth shifting. Side-to-side motionsfor steering, finger operated directioncontrol and thumb operated buttons forgear selection combine to provide afluid motion that reduces effort andallows the operator to work the machinefor long periods of time with little orno fatigue.

2 Left Pedal. The ICTC is operated bythe left pedal. Within the first 39 mm(1.5 in) of pedal travel, rimpull can becontrolled from 100 percent to 20 percent.Fully depressing the pedal appliesthe brake. The right pedal allowsstandard braking.

3 Comfort Series Seat. With an airsuspension and retractable seat belt,the Comfort Series seat is designedfor comfort and support. Seat cushionsreduce pressure on the lower backand thighs while allowing increasedarm and leg movement.

4 Electro-Hydraulic Blade Controls.The 834H integrates the tilt/tip switchto the joystick on the control pod.In addition, the 834H comes with thestandard ABP system that allows theoperator to preset the blade position fordozing and reversing at high speeds.

5 Tilt/Tip Switch. This switch has beenfully integrated into the blade controljoystick and allows the operator to havefull control over the blade position.

6 Electro-Hydraulic Lock-out Switch.This lock-out switch disables thehydraulic controls.

7 Automatic Blade Positioning.The ABP system provides operatorautomation through the use of in-cylinder sensors and implementsoftware. It contributes to operatorcomfort and improves productivity.

8 Caterpillar Monitoring System(EMS-III). EMS-III provides informationon the 834H’s major components andsystems.

• Gauges display fuel tank level andtemperatures for engine coolant,torque converter and hydraulic oils.The tachometer is an analog gaugewith digital readout for gearselection and ground speed.

• The main module consists of 10 faultindicators and one display.

• System alerts the operator if thetransmission is engaged while theparking brake is applied or if pressuredrops, the brake is applied.

Throttle Lock. Similar to cruise controlin an automobile, throttle lock allowsthe operator to preset engine speed fora variety of applications, resulting infaster cycle times and increasedproductivity.

Rimpull Control System. RCS hasfour factory preset rimpull settings(low, medium, high and maximum)to better match ground conditions.

Autoshift. With autoshift, the operatoris able to set the maximum gear intowhich the transmission will be allowedto shift. This feature allows additionalcomfort and focus on the job. The switchalso offers a manual position for operatorcontrolled shifting.

Lock-up Clutch Torque Converter Switch.The switch activates the lock-up clutchfor direct drive efficiency.

Front and Rear Window Wiper/Washer.Wiper/washer controls are within easyreach so the operator can maintain aclear field of vision.

9 Cat Engine Compression Brake.This brake supplies engine brakingtorque by opening the exhaust valvesfueling the engine compression stroke.

10 Viewing Area. The 834H has anexcellent viewing area through the useof bonded glass in the front windshield.An internal ROPS improves peripheralviewing by eliminating the largestructure outside the cab.

Easy Maintenance. In addition toservicing features built into the engine,the 834H includes the following:

Rear Access Stairs and Standard Left-Hand Stairway. The standard left-handstairs allow comfortable access foroperators and service personnel.

Remote ECPC Pressure Taps. Easy toreach and access, the ECPC pressuretapes are now located behind the cab,under the platform doors.

Service Platform. Passage to thehydraulic filters, pumps and transmissionis available through a large door in theplatform behind the cab.

Electronics Bay. A separate door in theplatform provides access to the fusesand electronic control modules.

Batteries. Access for the batteriesis provided though hinged doorsin the bumper.

Caterpillar Monitoring System (EMS-III).Provides operators and service technicianswith diagnostic information on themachine’s major components andsystems. It also allows for a flashablesoftware using a laptop and Cat ETinstead of replacing a chip that containsnew software.

Radiator Clean-out Doors. Easy accessis provided to clean out the radiator area.

Grouped Lube Points. Lube pointsare grouped and labeled for easydaily service.

Sight Gauges. Quick fluid level checksfor the transmission, hydraulic tanks andradiator are possible with sight gauges.

Ground Level Engine Shut-off.Engine shut-off and electricaldisconnect switches are standard.

Oil Change Interval. Caterpillar hasmaintained the 500-hour oil changeinterval on the 834H with the C18 enginewith ACERT Technology.

Brakes. With axle-shaft design, thebrakes can be serviced while leavingthe final drive intact.

Cat Product Link. The 834H has theoption of Product Link from the factory.It allows the customer to track themachine location and service hoursthrough global position system (GPS)technology and provides all loggeddiagnostic codes.
